Include a description and explanation of the origins of the issue, as well as all key facts and involved parties. Discuss and explain the variety of arguments that would most likely be raised on both sides of the issue/case. Make sure to address competing perspectives. When Nurses Strike
In the United States, there has been a continuous debate between those who favor collective bargaining for nurses and those who believe it is not professional. Likewise, the controversy over whether nurses should strike has been longstanding and continues today. Those who oppose the idea of nurses striking and those who support the right of nurses to strike. Even nurses themselves are divided on this topic.
A strike is a full or partial organized work stoppage by a group of workers, including slow-downs and other organized disturbances of the routine work process. A strike model is set out in the Appendix. An organized refusal of a group of workers to work overtime is usually implemented as part of a labor dispute. There may be a temporary disturbance of the routine work process as a result of a labor dispute concerning employer–employee relations. Those authorized to call a strike are workers’ organizations that represent a majority of the workers, or a representative elected by a majority of the workers. The right to strike constitutes an ethical, humanistic conflict. The right to strike must be examined from the viewpoint of society, the State, the public, justice and the nurses themselves. Any sanctions by nurses cause prolonged suffering to both hospitalized patients.
2010 was marked by several high-profile nurses’ strikes in the USA. In June 2010, nurses in California and Minnesota planned a one-day strike aimed largely at improving nurse-to-patient ratios. A California Superior Court judge blocked 11,000 registered nurses at five University of California medical centers from taking part in the one-day strike on the grounds that it would be contrary to the public interest. The Minnesota Nurses Association’s (MNA) one day strike went forward, and included 14 hospitals across three healthcare systems in and around Minneapolis and St Paul, involving 12,000 registered nurses. This marked the largest nurses’ strike in history, surpassing the 1984 strike by the MNA. In March 2010, nurses at Temple University Hospital in Pennsylvania went on strike over wages, the discontinuation of tuition benefits for dependents, and other work rules. After 28 days of being on strike, an agreement was reached that met many of the nurses’ demands.
Example 1
Nurses walked out of the pediatric ward, in which a number of children were undergoing intravenous infusions and had respiratory tubes in place. Fear of the negative outcome that could ensue, as opposed to the nurses’ obligation to be conceptually and concretely cautious, presented the nurses with a conflict. They returned to the department under various pretexts, which contradicted general strike headquarters policy. Even though medical students and doctors contributed to the cause by substituting for the nurses, to express support and professional solidarity some of the nurses went back to work.
Example 2
A nationwide nurses’ strike took place in September 1996, to highlight understaffing and a rise in the number of patients, which resulted in a personnel shortage and the inability to provide quality nursing care. The general strike leadership instructed all nurses to convene in an auditorium of one of the hospitals, leaving a minimum of workers on the wards. Internal medicine departments were left fully occupied with seriously ill patients, five of whom were on respirators and usually attended continuously by nurses. The nurses at first heeded the instructions but later, when asked to go and check the wards, they could not resist the patients’ pleas for help and refused to go back to the local strike headquarters. Some of them sneaked up to their departments with various excuses until only the general national headquarters representatives remained assembled. The nurses’ conflict – either fulfilling their nursing duties vis-à-vis the patients or maintaining the strike – resulted in most of them choosing to violate the strike rather than cause suffering to patients.

Stereotypes have long been recognized to have a negative impact on people who have been
historically marginalized in American society. But according to many psychologists, some not-
so-obvious results of stereotyping affect virtually everyone. In his book Whistling Vivaldi; How
Stereotypes Affect Us and What We Can Do (2010), Claude Steele describes the phenomenon of
stereotype threat, which he and other psychologists believe affects people as diverse as women
taking math tests and US soldiers in Italy. The book offers a detailed account of how Steele and
his colleagues conducted their research on this widespread phenomenon and proposes ways in
which we as a society can overcome stereotype threats to individuals.
