The term paper assignment for this course is an analytical review of Alain DeBotton’s book Status Anxiety. We will discuss this book extensively throughout the course and you will read a chapter from the book for 10 weeks during the middle part of the course. I don’t expect you to draft your review until you have had the benefit of the readings and discussion. An analytical book review is one that does considerably more than summarize the work. I do not want a summary. Instead, what we are after here is a reasoned and thoughtful reaction to the book; an analysis of both its content and its larger meaning. The assignment you turn in should be at least 2,000 of your words on the subject. If you need a model to follow, get a copy of the New York Review of Books, or any other periodical that does extensive essay reviews of scholarly works.
This work must be your own. Ideas not your own, paraphrases of the ideas of others, or quotes from other works must clearly be cited as such. There are many reviews on the internet of this book. You may consult them, but plagiarizing them will immediately be flagged by the system. Make this your own work.
For those of you not familiar with formatting and writing social science papers, I suggest you follow the APA or ASA formats for referencing and style and your paper will be in compliance. If you do not have a copy of the APA guidelines, any general manual used in writing for the social sciences will be helpful. Also, students in previous classes have found APA format guidelines online. ASA or MLA is acceptable, only be consistent when choosing a writing style. We have examined a range of nonviolent movements: the Nashville Student Civil Rights nonviolent action, the Black Lives Matter movement, the Palestinian Intifada, the Denmark resistance to Nazi occupation, civil resistance to climate change (divestment and Adani campaign), and the women’s suffrage movement. Choose three of these case studies. Based upon Adam Curle’s framework and the elements of nonviolence, what elements of nonviolence are operative in these cases? What do you see as the key factors influencing their success? Why were these factors so critical? Are there any limitations that impede the efficacy of nonviolent action? Which of these movements provides the clearest example of nonviolent direct action?
Essay Evaluation Guidelines
Content: The essay demonstrates an understanding of the issues in question. Important terms are defined and used correctly. The essay demonstrates knowledge of the course readings. The argument logically supports the thesis, and claims are backed up by evidence and/or logical argument. The writer provides a clearly articulated and strongly argued position relative to the question.
Style: The essay presents a clear thesis statement and sound organizational structure. Transitions between paragraphs are smooth and logical. The conclusion makes a strong, brief restatement of the argument. There are few if any mechanical errors that distract from the content (e.g., grammar and spelling). A strong defense entails both an argument in support of your position and refutation of competing positions. Remember to support your opinion through logic and/or evidence rather than merely asserting your opinion. Also, a part of defending your opinion is to refute the opinions of others, so be sure to refute the alternative perspectives you do not choose as well as defending your choice. Ask yourself: Is my argument for the perspective I have chosen convincing? (Or is my refutation of competing perspectives compelling?)

PPP fraud
The $670 billion behemoth known as the Paycheck Protection Program is, by most measures, the largest small-business relief program in American history—a cornerstone of the federal government’s response to a once-in-a-generation pandemic that has devastated small-business owners across the country.
Yet nine months after it was enacted as part of the $2.2 trillion CARES Act pandemic aid package, PPP is swiftly becoming more synonymous with the least flattering aspects of government intervention: namely, waste, graft, and fraud that critics say was enabled by mismanagement and a lack of transparency on the part of the Trump administration.
Instances of PPP fraud are legion and continue to pile up, from the fake Florida ministry that allegedly received more than $8 million in government funds to the Texas man who allegedly poured nearly $1 million of PPP money into cryptocurrency. Those cases appear to be only the tip of the iceberg; there are suggestions that hundreds of millions, if not billions of dollars of taxpayer funds, may have been fraudulently allocated through PPP, with government watchdogs acknowledging the possibility of “widespread potential fraud and abuse.”
The Trump administration, for its part, points to the program’s successes in allocating more than $520 billion to roughly 5.2 million American businesses, enabling many to save jobs and keep workers on their payroll during a time of severe economic distress. But even on a legitimate basis, the program clearly had its flaws. Data recently released by the Small Business Administration suggests that more than half of all PPP funds went to only 5% of recipients and more than a quarter went to only 1%, with large and well-capitalized public companies among the beneficiaries of that lopsided distribution.
What’s more, there’s ample evidence that many small businesses—particularly minority-owned ones, which were hit disproportionately hard by the pandemic—weren’t able to get the money they needed through the program. Meanwhile, wealthy celebrities and well-connected politicians found it all too convenient to get the funds they desired.

Articles have to relate with government somehow (war, policy, right-to-die, etc.). No topics on abortion!!!
Successful Critique Papers: In order to do extremely well on this assignment, you need to make sure to critique the author and how he/she conveyed the information. Do not simply write a summary of the article or critique the topic itself. Your main purpose is to critique the author’s presentation of logic, facts, reason, analysis, stance, etc. Though you can briefly critique the topic in your conclusion, at least ninety percent of the entire paper should be the critique of the author. See the article critique examples from former students and handout below. Those who follow these specific instructions, examples, and handouts will do extremely well on this assignment. In addition, do not speak in first person (or using “I”), as it presents your work more in the form of an unsupported opinion.
In addition, when you open the Article Critique examples (below), you will see that some of the text is in bold. The text that you see in bold is a critique. You will see text in bold throughout the entire papers in order to give you a good idea on what an actual critique should look like. The final draft that you submit to me should have plenty of critiques throughout in order to score well. You do not need to bold your text (or critiques) throughout your paper. I simply provided the examples with the text in bold to show you the critiques.
