Social Costs of Victimization
We now move from the personal costs of crime
to victims and their families to the social costs of those crimes. There can be
many types of costs to those beyond the victim and the victim’s immediate
surroundings. Crimes can impact communities, cities, states, and nations. For
example, homicides can adversely impact neighborhoods and larger communities as
the residents experience grief and live in increased fear. Crimes increase the
need for response resources and greater finances at the local, city, and state
levels. These costs can trickle up to costs at the federal levels as people
organize and lobby for resources and change. There is competition for resources
across needs.
