Look at the title of the table/chart.
a. What is it about? What or who is the “unit of analysis?” what kind of data is being featured: income, wages, accumulated wealth, something non-monetary?
3) Carefully examine the data reflected in the table / chart:
a. Are we looking at a comparison of individuals or groups in a single point in time or are we looking at trend data over more than one, or even many points in time?

b. Describe the type of data you are examining and why it is interesting to you and important for the reader to understand.
c. Highlight the most important patterns and/or comparisons that stand out to you.
d. Interpret the table or chart: what “story” emerges from the patterns and/or comparisons? What is the table or chart telling us? What point is it making? Keep in mind, some tables make multiple points. You don’t have to say everything about your selected table or chart; just whatever you think is most salient and interesting.

Professor Feedback: Joseph, You clearly have. given the subject of growing up and the impact of relationships on the individual much good thought. You work in lots of good information to help support your discussion. One aspect of the paper that I was. expecting/hoping you would develop more was how exactly these forces shaped you into the person you are. You stayed more on the general level rather than relating the discussion directly to your life and experiences. Are there examples, incidents, or experiences from your personal life that you could work into your discussion to show how region, family, positive relationships, understanding the value of family, environment, etc. made you into the person you are today? Identify a thesis statement
– A thesis statement is the summary of how you interpret your research question. Per the UNC Writing
Center, it makes a claim that others might dispute, but that you intend to defend during the course of your
essay. All arguments in your essay should link back to the thesis statement. It is usually one sentence in
the opening paragraph of an essay.

Compile at least 10 academic references that support your thesis statement
– You will need to use academic citations and examples to support your argument. In this context an academic reference
will either be peer-reviewed research, pre-print articles that are expected to undergo peer review, or
reports that otherwise abide by academic conventions. As a general rule, academic references will be
available via Google Scholar.

The research essay will:
• Meaningfully incorporate the identified academic material
• Be 1000 words or less (not including references)
