A. Research Paper
Each student is assigned one research paper about the following topic:
“How has the recent COVID pandemic impacted supply chains around the world? Please identify and use a specific company example in your discussion. Also, explain how companies could do better in the future to avoid supply chain issues.”
Paper must use a minimum of 5 major references, including a minimum of 1 scholarly source, to support your assertions, create your arguments, etc. All the sources must be clearly and correctly cited in the text (please refer to Purdue OWL). In general, use direct quotations only if you have a good reason, and most of your paper should be in your own words. Your research paper must begin with a research proposal, or hypothesis statement with respect to the topic. A well founded and logical conclusion is also a requirement of the papers. As in all academic writing, you should make sure the tone is professional.
Requirements: The research paper must be a minimum of approximately 1200 words and 3-4 pages in length. Rubric will be provided in class and posted on the Blackboard. Please note that NO title page or identifying information should be on the paper to allow for anonymous assessment. Each student is required to visit the Writing & Research Center before submitting the research paper. Failure to adhere to each of these requirements will result in an automatic loss of a full grade level on the paper.

Note: A research paper is the culmination and final product of an involved process of research, critical thinking, source evaluation, organization, and composition. It is, perhaps, helpful to think of the research paper as a living thing, which grows and changes as the student explores, interprets, and evaluates sources related to a specific topic. Secondary sources are the heart of a paper and provide its nourishment for these research paper assignments, without the support of and interaction with these sources. The research paper serves not only to further the field in which it is written, but also to provide the student with an exceptional opportunity to increase his/her knowledge in that field. It is also possible to identify a research paper by what it is not.
Remember, a research paper is not simply an informed summary of a topic by means of primary and secondary sources. It is neither a book report nor an opinion piece nor an expository essay consisting solely of one’s 2

interpretation of a text nor an overview of a particular topic. Instead, it is a genre that requires one to spend time investigating and evaluating sources with the intent to offer interpretations of the texts, and not unconscious regurgitations of those sources. The goal of a research paper is not to inform the reader what others have to say about a topic, but to draw on what others have to say about a topic and engage the sources to thoughtfully offer a unique perspective on the issue at hand.

Writing papers forces us to gather more information than we might stumble upon, to refine ideas beyond generalities and abstractions, to confront fuzzy thinking, and to become more fully acquainted with the resonances of a topic and our perspective on it. We actually learn by writing. One of the requirements in this class is writing a brief, original, research paper that includes a modest proportion of critical analysis; no paper will receive an “A” without originality and critical analysis. In MUSIC 117 we examine a variety of styles that are identified under the general understanding of “country music.” In your final written assignment you are to examine one song that fits your own criteria of “country music” and provide the following:
1. A brief background of the song and its artist, e.g. date of release, album, artist’s bio (very brief)
2. An in-depth analysis of the song’s musical features (melody, harmony, rhythm, form, texture, instrumentation, dynamics)
3. What features make this song distinctively “country” and, most importantly, why?

I attach great importance to clear and accurate writing, and all of the following criteria will affect your grade on the written assignments:
Appropriate content: you must write what the assignment asks for, as specified in these written instructions. If you write something that isn’t what the assignment asks for, it doesn’t matter how well you do it: you won’t get credit.
Correct physical form: in addition to the criteria for “format” discussed above, physical form includes the proper use of paragraphs with indentation to show where a new paragraph begins, and overall neat appearance of the page with a straight left margin and without weird effects such as line breaks in the middle of a word. Print out your assignment before the day it is due to make sure that the computer does not produce these unwanted effects: printer problems will not be accepted as an excuse. Remember also that you must include the appropriate grading table at the top of each assignment. Papers must also be stapled, and typed, using a 12 pt Times New Roman font, which is standard for most academic papers.
Appropriate style: This is a common problem among undergraduate students. Keep in mind that this is NOT a creative writing assignment. Use vocabulary and sentence structures suitable for an academic report, avoiding colloquial language and slang. Keep your prose clear, concise, and supported by data.

Correct spelling and typing are required, including spelling of terms and names introduced in the class. Run the spell check after making all other revisions, and don’t rely on it exclusively: it will not detect errors like writing “from” instead of “form” because “from” is also a word. Proof-read your work for yourself as well. Spelling also includes word boundaries (leaving a space between words and not writing two words as if they were one).
Correct punctuation includes the use of apostrophes (make sure you know the difference between possessive its and it’s = “it is”) and the proper use of spaces with punctuation (note that you leave a space before open-parentheses and open-quotes but after most other punctuation marks). The most common errors of punctuation concern sentence boundaries: writing two or more sentences as if they were one (‘run-on sentences’) or writing part of a sentence as if it were a whole one (‘sentence fragments’). Make sure that what comes between the capital letter and the period is a single complete sentence. Correct capitalization of proper names and abbreviations is also included in punctuation.
Correct grammar includes subject-verb agreement (if the subject is plural, the verb should be in the plural form too) and using the correct form of a word (for instance, make sure you know the difference between sing, sang, sung, and song).
Citation format: You must correctly cite information, ideas, and other relevant information that are not your known (see Syllabus for examples of plagiarism). For the purposes of the above written assignments, you must cite your sources in the form of footnotes. A simple bibliography page will NOT suffice. Your footnote citations must include the following information and in this order: author’s name (last, first), date of source, title of source, publication info on source (e.g. publisher’s name and city, journal title and volume/number, website url (including the date accessed by you), and page numbers, if applicable. A quick rule to remember: your citations must include all information that will allow your reader to consult your source in a timely fashion.

This paper will be a formal argumentative paper that advocates one side of an issue through the use of facts, studies, and expert opinion.
It must follow the “Classical Argument” structure we have talked about in class (See Handout on our class website). Also, please label each section of this Classical Argument structure in the version you turn in to me.
Your objective is to critically analyze information, gain knowledge and understanding about a certain issue, and articulate these ideas in a clear, organized, and credibly persuasive manner.
Your paper must have a clearly established thesis. This thesis must be an argument. Be sure to answer the question above. Reflect on all of the readings from the semester and how each writer has attempted to develop his/her argument. What strategies do they use?
You are required to use direct quotes from at least one of our class readings and at least 5 different outside sources in your paper. The quality of your research is important, especially with topics such as this. It is your responsibility to use credible, informed authorities for building your arguments (Ask of your sources: What gives this individual the authority to speak on this subject? Experience? Credentials? Published material? PhD?). Do not use Pro/Con or other introductory websites for your sources. You want experts in your field, not general topic sources. Also, anecdotal evidence, while powerful and immediate to your own experience, has little value in a research paper. Use your personal experience in the introduction or conclusion, but rely on credible studies and expert opinion for the body of your argument.
Please note that each question is focused on a specific aspect of an issue. Do not make the mistake of writing about technologies in general, or freedom of expression in general.
We will be using the MLA style of documentation. Your paper must follow this system accurately and completely (50 points of possible 200 is based on MLA usage).
This paper will be a culmination of all the writing and instruction from the semester. It is a final and comprehensive evaluation of your critical thinking and writing skills. Grammar and punctuation must be error free. Produce your best effort, perfect on all levels.
Don’t expect to have all the answers before you do your research. The most valuable reason for doing research is that you find out answers and base your ideas/argument on sound evidence and reasoning discovered in the process.
Whatever you say, you must prove. Don’t assume things are true because your experience says so, or because it seems “obvious.” If the technology is addicting, then prove it. If privacy is being invaded, then prove it. If there is more bullying, then prove it. If expression should include offensiveness, prove it.

Respond to the following 5 high-order thinking questions related to the final unit of the course, ‘The Americas.’ You may number your paper 1-5, responding to each directly.

In Western schools, children are taught that after Columbus, Europeans “carved out a civilization” starting with small settlements on the edge of a vast wilderness on the East coasts of North and South America. My grandmother is almost a hundred years now, and yet, she behaves like someone whose age has not affected her. She is healthy and can still manage to do various works that I find challenging, which keeps me wondering how she does it. All the time, my parents ask her to rest and let them assist, but she finds it awkward and declines.Ageism is one of the top things in society that threatens older individuals. Ageism refers to individuals being unfairly handled and regularly generalized due to age. It can refer to the unfair treatment of younger individuals, but the phrase ageism mostly means the discrimination of older individuals as they get old (Senger, 2019). The bias is common in our current society and has become a norm as most individuals are involved in it without perceiving it. Society views older individuals as less desirable than their younger counterparts, which has led to their removal from senior posts such as employment where they had authority and deference to nothing, which places them in various problems such as abuse and abandonment.Ageism fixes upon stereotypes, and stereotypes refer to exaggerated assumptions and illusions about aging and speech that brings to mind negative perceptions of older individuals. The negative perceptions lead to the suffering of the older people in societies as they are looked down upon and treated unfairly. They experience discrimination in all fields, such as, employment, entertainment, politics, and health care (Dionigi, 2015). Stereotypes may be harmful or negative, and examples of negative stereotypes include memory loss, inability to perform daily tasks or operate a vehicle safely. My grandmother is aware of these stereotypes challenges them in various ways. My grandmother spends time with her friends and walks around interacting with other people to avoid being lonely (Dionigi, 2015). In addition, she involves in exercises and even reading to keep herself healthy and prevent illnesses. Climbing the stairs is usually part of her exercise. Work Cited:

Intimate Partner Violence (IVP) is any kind of violence that happens between two people in an intimate relationship with each other. It can be physical, verbal, emotional, sexual or financial violence and it can appear harmless at first as many partners in a relationship argue or disagree. However, more than half of IPV cases go unreported or the allegations are withdrawn after a short time. It happens because of two reasons: people are ashamed to report their partner because they have feelings for them and they believe their partners would change and it was just a selected accident. Emotional reasons prevent the victims from reporting the abuse and they prefer to suffer in silence. One point to consider as well is the fact that many victims are afraid to report their partner fearing farther abuse, or they are convinced nobody would believe them anyway. Some victims are afraid they don’t have the financial resources to support themselves without their partners help, let alone potentially hire a lawyer for a costly divorce or custody battle. For victims with a disability, domestic abuse is especially challenging to report because they are dependent on their abuser for their care. Some victims are afraid no one will believe them, especially if the abuse is happening behind closed doors when in public, their spouse behaves like the model partner. While others are afraid they will lose custody of their children. Some victims are scared they will bring shame to their family or that their friends and family will judge them.

According to my understanding, symbolic interactionism denotes imagery communication social units in a given society, a case in which proponents of the ideology focused to inform society of the relevance of identity and collective inclusivity. Also, in my opinion, feminism theory advocates for gender equality demands against female sexual orientation abuse. Thus, supporters of the theory, such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, intended to address the need for social equality irrespective of gender-based differences. Thus, this article will reflect the objectives of symbolic interactionism and feminism theory based on its proponents’ view.
At the outset, I suppose that symbolic interactionism is a symbol-based communication strategy within social units of the larger society. For example, the Juneteenth celebration symbolizes Black’s freedom from slavery among African American communities and remorse for shame and guilt among the confederation defeat in advocating for slavery. Thus, proponents of this model, such as Irving Goffman, aimed at respecting social identities without harming collective social inclusivity (Byczkowska-Owczarek 165). On the other hand, feminism theory advocates for gender equality within any social context, such as schooling and professionalism. Based on such grounds, adherent advocates of this school of thought centered on abolishing gender-based prejudiced discrimination. For example, the 18th-century women suffrage leaders such as Elizabeth Stanton and Susan Anthony reflect the Pussy riots; women leadership adopt feminism as central policy in advocating gender equality (Monopoli 982).
In conclusion, this article argues that feminism theory advocates for gender equality. Thus, in my perception, the theory’s proponents focused on eradicating gender discrimination practices, as argued above. Also, the article accounts for my perception that symbolism theory centers on emblematic communication within social units existing in a collective society. Thus, I perceive that proponents of the ideology sought to embrace the role of identity diversity in a vast society structure. Generally, the article reflects on the two theories mentioned above.
