Description
Your book report should be 8-9 typed pages long (double-spaced, one-inch margins). Overall, your book report should focus on the central argument(s) (thesis) of the book followed by a thorough description of evidence presented in the book to back up the author’s claims. In the introduction of the book report,you will identify the author’s thesis and explain it in your own words. You will include a brief introduction of the topic or the summary of the book to provide a meaningful context for the thesis statement. In your Introduction you will also tell the reader the three distinct pieces of evidence or cases—that is, the three chapters from McAlevey, each one is a case—that you will analyze in your report.
In the next section you will analyze the evidence—the three cases. Rules for writing the paper
1) The paper must have a thesis statement – a “why” or “how” question(s) which your paper will answer. The paper must have an introduction (which tells the reader what you are going to discuss; the thesis usually comes at the end of the introduction), a body (which contains the information that advances your thesis), and a conclusion (which summarizes what the reader has learned).
2) You must include a “works cited” page, which does not count as part of the page requirement. the paper is 11-14 pages, you must use at least eight sources. Three of these sources must be from class readings (each individual chapter of the texts will count as a separate source for our purposes). Two sources must be scholarly sources – cited, peer-reviewed articles in scholarly journals or similar books. The remaining sources are left to your discretion, but it is important that they be legitimate, verifiable sources (in other words, not something you found on a random Reddit thread). For these, newspapers, magazines, most journalism, biographies, and scholarly or government web sites are among your options.
3) The paper must follow the citing rules listed in the APSA Style Manual, which is linked in the “Pages” section of the course Canvas page. This means parenthetical citation for everything except Internet sites without an attributed author, which may be footnoted.
4) Papers must be double-spaced, using the Times New Roman font and a font size of 12. Margins should be one inch all around. Please include a title page (again this does not count toward the page requirement) with your name, the course, and the date.
