Requirements: This
essay should be at least 1500 words and should have a minimum of six sources.
You will also need a works cited page.

Purpose: To
analyze texts and support your interpretation; to practice using scholarly and
peer-reviewed sources; to practice MLA documentation and formatting; to use
proper grammar and spelling.

Expectations: Write
an essay following MLA paper formatting and MLA documentation style. Use
standard spelling, grammar, and diction. You may not use first person or
second person terms (“I” and “you”) for this assignment.

Assignment: An author’s body of work often contains repeated elements
or recurring themes. Take an author or poet from Volume E of The
Norton Anthology and discuss how an overarching theme or meaning can
be found in that writer’s body of work and develop an essay that adequately
supports your claims.

You will
be expected to incorporate literary criticism (like those found in article
databases) and use correct MLA style to cite your sources. Use specific
examples from both primary literary works and secondary sources.

Sources: You must use both primary and secondary
sources for this essay. For primary sources, you should analyze a minimum of one
play or novel, two short stories, or four poems by your author. For secondary
sources, you should include at least three scholarly texts; these may be
selections from scholarly books or articles from peer-reviewed journals. You
are not limited to printed books and journals, though; you can also find
scholarly books and articles online, though
eBooks, or in NSCC’s databases. You should avoid popular sources written
for a general audience, such as magazines, newspapers, and most websites. If you have questions about whether your
sources are appropriate, ask.

You may NOT list any sources on your Works Cited page that
you do not use in your paper. Also, you may NOT use (through quotation,
paraphrase, or summary) any sources that you do not cite in the text and on the
Works Cited page – this is plagiarism and grounds for failing the assignment.

Submission: This
essay is due no later than 11pm on the date
listed in the Assignments tab on NS
Online, but it may be turned in anytime before then. This essay must
be turned in through the Assignments tab on NS
Online. Your document must be in .doc, .docx, or .rtf format.

Grading: This
essay will be graded according to the course grading rubric posted on NS Online. Review this rubric again

A few comments (most fairly general in nature):
An “Executive Summary” should contain a brief summary of the situation and most importantly summarize your specific recommendations for future company growth. You don’t need the first sentence of the Executive Summary – focus on the situation and recommendations, i.e. mention what they are in this section. (It is standard to write this last)
In terms of competition (consumer value), I think the mortgage industry is mainly price competition. So, you might want to discuss a little more about their main source of value, i.e., HOW they have successfully been able to compete. Is it mainly a price advantage? Another source of value?
Perhaps the most important component of a Marketing Plan Report should be a thorough SWOT analysis. Your marketing strategy and tactical recommendations should be derived from this SWOT analysis. Think quite a bit about threats and opportunities – how can these be used as a set of future recommendations for the company? In other words, which of the SWOT components can be leveraged or minimized for future growth?
Targeting: Which one or two segments represent the BEST targets for this particular company going forward? If the target is 30 to 70 year olds then positioning will be difficult (the more broad the target market, the more difficult the positioning). This through who represents their best customers (demographics, geographics, etc.).
At the end of the report, focus on what your specific recommendations are for future growth. This (along with the SWOT Analysis) is the most important component of a marketing plan. So, discussion of the Marketing Mix can be rolled into your recommendations (i.e., can you change price? Distribution? Promotion? etc. to help the company grow?). You have some nice recommendations now – just expand on these a little bit.
In Summary: A Marketing Plan is a blueprint for the future of the company, so make sure it reads like a set of recommendations based on your analysis and not a retrospective report on a local company. Any recommendations should be based off of the earlier components of the report (specifically the SWOT analysis)

You have a female client and have just completed her consultation. In her consultation paperwork she provided you with the following details: Age is 42, non-smoker, blood pressure is 139/92, glucose level is 93, and her total cholesterol is 200. She has not exercised consistently for 2 years and would like to lose 20lbs. She is not a fan of running but can do it, and she has never done resistance training besides in a group exercise class. She would like to run a 5k in the next year with friends. She does not know her current body fat but had it checked a year ago when she wanted to start a plan and it was 26% (she didn’t follow through with plan). She does not have any known cardiovascular diseases or a family history of them.
Write a paper about what your steps would be in completing the assessment and planning for this client. What assessments would you utilize with her based on information provided? What would be your thought process behind each assessment protocol used? What type of program design would you use for her workouts? What protocols would you need to take prior to starting her workout program? What would the basic outline look like for workouts (i.e. total physical activity time, cardio time, resistance time, F.I.T.T.)? How would you use the information regarding her BP, glucose, and total cholesterol?
This paper is to be 3-4 pages and then include a 1-page spreadsheet set up with assessments, and basic program ideas for this client. What are your concerns about the authors interpretations, approach, or conclusion? Would you recommend this article to use for research on your topic?

Outside of academia, music journalism is one of the most prolific forms of engaging with popular music. In addition to articles in magazines such as Billboard and online platforms like Pitchfork, the rise of the internet has led to a rapid spread of music blogs, podcasts, and other media commentaries on popular music.
For this assignment, you will write a short album review by an artist in a language that you do not speak. While artists currently popular in the US but born in other countries are acceptable for this assignment, the idea is for you to choose a musical genre that you are not familiar with and learn how to research and contextualize it appropriately.
Your write up must include a paragraph-long introduction in which you summarize the significance of the recording with regard to our class conversations about global popular music. While your introduction should include the title of the album and the name of the artist, the key purpose of the introduction is to inform your reader about why the album matters.
Second, you will summarize background information about the genre and country of origin of your album in a single paragraph. This information should be derived from scholarly sources (I recommend starting with Oxford Music Online), and include information such as, but not limited to: the history of the genre, its social function, correct spelling of instruments used in the recording, characteristic rhythms, and album art. All background information must be cited in a works cited section AND with in-text citations.
You will use these one or two examples to make some broader statements about the album as a cohesive work. You might consider:
– How does the album support or contradict other claims in this course about the significance of global popular music in general?
– How does the album support or contradict claims about music from the country of origin?
– How does the album reinforce or diverge from the characteristics of the genre you have selected?
– What social function might the album serve? Who might listen to it? In what context?
Finally, you will analyze one or two tracks from the album using musical terminology from class and/or your research on the genre.
Please note that we are NOT looking for statements about whether you think the album is good or bad. We’re looking for an assessment of its significance within the context of other material we’ve covered this term.

Choosing your stories

A. Create a story: Scholar Walter Fisher says that humans understand themselves and the world around them through stories. Audiences, therefore, relate to stories. In trying to create identification with your audience, stories are your most powerful assets.

Think about people, events, anecdotes, or hypothetical (imagined but possible) situations you could you use to help tell the story of your speech.

Can you work a story into your introduction? It could be used in the attention getter or in one of the other sections of the introduction.

What stories best represent the first category of experiences you are highlighting? The second category or experiences? The third? Don’t be limited by what you saw in the samples; expand on the stories.

Focus on the questions Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?

Sometimes we forget our outlining skills when outlining stories. Remember you should still use single sentence points with good coordination and subordination. Here’s an example:

II. My personal life now revolves around being a grandma

A. You’d think that would be a safe place to be, but for me, it carries it’s own hazards and harms (alliteration).

1. For example, I joined my granddaughters on a ropes course the last time we spent time together.
