History 208 | Sports in World History | Project Guidelines
This semester we will encounter a number of themes: the tensions between
sports as exclusionary and sports as a vehicle for opportunity and social
progress; the need to define sports as political; the impact of sports on
communities, both positive and negative; the significance of rules,
regulations, and quantification in modern sports; and the links between sports
and big money. The purpose of this assignment, which will serve as the
capstone to this course, is to get you to build on these themes, in order to
see how you might apply the content of the class to your lives and interests
here at UM.
Because of the unique circumstances of the term, I propose the following.
Either as an individual or in small groups, you will select and listen to at
least ten of the Behee oral histories of black athletes at UM, which were
completed in 1970 (you can access them here: https://bentley.umich.edu/news-
events/news/beyond-the-field-2/ ). Using those interviews, you will produce a
project or paper—the equivalent of 8-10 pages in length for an individual
project, or 6-7 pages per member for a group project—that addresses some, but
not necessarily all, of the following questions:
How do the interviews of black student athletes at UM shed light on the
relationship between sports and political activism? How do these athletes
think about themselves as students, athletes, and political actors? How do
their experiences contribute to our understanding of race relations in Ann
Arbor and responses to the Black Action Movement of the late 1960s and early
1970s (you’ll find an overview of BAM here: https://www.lib.umich.edu/online-
exhibits/exhibits/show/history-of-race-at-um/diversity-in-student-
life/activism ) Do these student athletes think there’s an obligation for
athletes to engage in political action? Do you? Are the values of
amateurism—a concept that has its roots in the late nineteenth century—still
useful today? Is there such a thing as a student athlete?
Note: All projects must be argumentative, not simply fact-driven, and include
a thesis statement.

There are some people who identify
as male and females. While other’s themselves don’t identify as male or female.
There are other terms that some people use. How would you feel about them
teaching children more about the different identity’s people go by? That they
can learn more information about the topic and possibly be a little less
bullying and victimized in the schools. Would it really be a bad thing if
children knew more about these kinds of topics? How much do people really know
about other people’s lives?

How do different
people define themselves? The different types of ways those are classified as
homosexual, heterosexual, bisexual, or asexual. People also are attracted to
others in different ways as well. People who are attracted to the other sex are
known as heterosexuals.
People who are attracted to the
same sex are known as homosexuals. People who are attracted to both men and
woman are called bisexuals. People who show no sexual attractions at all are
known as asexual individuals. Many genders tend to question their sexual
orientation and their privileges and protections they enjoy because of it.

Some of the Gender
Variant groups are Male-to-female transsexuals(MTF), Female-to-male
transsexuals(FTM), Transgenderizes(those who live in the gender role associated
with another sex without sex reassignment surgery), Bigender persons(those who
identify as both man and woman), Drag queen and kings(typically gay men and
lesbian women, respectively, who dress in men’s and woman’s clothing), and
Intersexed persons(those born with ambiguous genitalia). Transexual is a person
who changed their appearance to better suite who they want to be and appear as.
Transgender is a person who changed their appearance to better suite who they
want to be and appear as.

In school a lot of
transgenders feel unsafe in different spaces like the bathrooms, locker rooms
and in PE class. Transgender youth deal with a lot of harassment from peers in
school. Transgender youth are more likely to experience a hostile school
experience like harassment and victimization from feeling unsafe from their non-transgender
peers. If teachers become more aware of transgender youth, the youth would feel
more safer and have lower rates of victimization.

Many people lack
the education of school-based sexual education. Many health issues can emerge
due to sexual behavior like unplanned pregnancy, STD’s, STI’s, and sexual
violence or trauma. Some experience this before the age of 24. Every state has
a different sex education policy and most receive the education before they
reach the age of eighteen. Many states try and teach the students in the
classroom about abstinence or abstinences until-marriage. Some states indicated
that each sex education class should be taught based on gender and transgender
students. There are some states that ban sexual acts between people of the same
gender and heterosexual couples.

Before the 1970’s
every society had LGBT people existing, but the gay community did not exist
yet. Some hostile climates in school are target more towards the LBGTQ youth
more than their heterosexual peers. There are some school sponsored programs
that support LBGTQ students improving school climates. The LBGT community
struggle with many different things and have lost a lot for the most part, but
adoption is one of the main issues and many people do not know that. Higher
rates of pregnancy come from those of females who identify as lesbian, gay,
bisexual(LGB) or same-sex contact than those who are in heterosexual
relationships.

Parents also play
a big role in a child’s learning to sexual orientation. When parents are more
involved in their child’s sexuality there are lower levels of suicide and a
greater chance of feeling like they belong in school. Also, can bring out
better academic outcomes. The more involved that parents are in their child’s
lives when it comes to their personal lives, gives their child a better outlook
on things and can make them feel more confident and comfortable about who they
really are.

There are a bunch
of countries that have created discrimination laws to protect the gays,
lesbians, and bisexuals. Some of the places that have them laws are Canada,
Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, The Netherlands, New
Zealand, Norway, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, and Sweden. There are civil
rights laws in nine of the US that include sexual orientation. An individual’s
feelings of not identifying with his or her assigned gender is called gender
confusion. Can also be called gender dysphoria or gender identity disorder.
Transgender or transexuals rarely discuss confusion. People get confused due to
the lack of knowledge of the subject. Trans people who feel as though they have
a condition that has always existed and are trapped in the wrong body.

You are a newly assigned Police Chief in the City of Bourbonville, U.S.A., which has
approximately 120,000 residents. Unfortunately, you have inherited a police department that was
formerly under investigation by the federal government for a major scandal. Six months ago, 8
police officers were arrested and convicted for both falsifying police reports and covering up
citizen complaints involving excessive use of force. Consequently, Gallup polls indicate that
68% of Bourbonville residents do not trust police officers in their community. Unemployment
has risen 27% and violent crime (e.g. murder, assaults, robberies, etc.) has increased 22% from
the previous year. Domestic violence has also experienced a sudden increase, which may have
caused the growing number of gang delinquency, especially in areas of low socioeconomic status.
Various quality of life issues (e.g. graffiti, public consumption, disorderly conduct) continually
rise as your police officers are underpaid and overworked. Sadly, 4 of the 150 sworn police
officers have committed suicide this last year. Overall, department morale is at an all-time low.
As a result, you have been tasked by the Mayor to research 3 significant theoretical
perspectives created over the course of our newly Criminal Justice discipline. The previous
police chief (your predecessor) never introduced any of these perspectives to the department, as
academia has never played as a factor in addressing the systemic issues within Bourbonville PD.
They are listed as:
1) Strain Theory
2) Theory of Differential Association
3) Labeling Theory
For EACH theoretical perspective, you are REQUIRED provide an
overview/description and assess their value in making policy change. Based on extensive
RESEARCH and your CRITICAL THOUGHT, make a decision on whether or not to utilize
these theoretical perspectives in your department as a foundational tool to enhance your agency.

The Development of the Bible as Literature and Sacred Scripture
a. Main Question: How did the oraliture and literature that is found in the Bible become considered sacred and holy?
b. The material found in the Bible may not have not always been considered holy scripture. How and when did it develop over time and become considered scripture? Describe the stages as proposed in class.

Social Justice in the Bible

Main question: One of the major themes of the Bible is social justice (“creating a fair and equal society in which each individual matters, their rights are recognized and protected, and decisions are made in ways that are fair and honest”). How does the concept of social justice manifest in the Bible and develop in Israelite, Jewish, and Christian cultures from the beginnings through to the New Testament?
b. What is the evidence for the social justice theory of the beginnings of Israel? What are the social justice items in the Torah? How does the monarchy change the socio-economic environment? What was the situation in the monarchy? What do the prophets say about these issues? How were things in the Persian Period? What does the New Testament and Jesus say on the subject?
Question 3
The Bible as History
a. Main question: Should we consider the authors of the historical books of the Bible to be writing history?
b. Much of the Bible presents itself as history but it is not how we would present history. Describe the different genres used in the biblical books of Genesis and Exodus, the Deuteronomistic History, Chronicles, the novellas, the gospels, and Acts, and how these ways of writing history differ from how we write history.

This assignment is for my Congo History Class, so the paper should be focused on the history of the Congo conflict happening during Leopold II’s rule but as long as it has analysis revolving anything about Imperialism and Congo history. There are many environmental factors that affect health. Such factors can include population growth and pollution. Industry, manufacturing and personal habits can all contribute to pollution in communities. Not only are areas in the United States affected by pollution, but areas throughout the world are affected as well. This puts each of us at risk for detrimental health outcomes.
