S.S. Allwright was a county election official; he denied Lonnie E. Smith, a black man, the right to vote in the 1940 Texas Democratic primary. Critical Thought/Research Paper
The writing assignment for this class is a five-page research paper on a selected Texas-related court case that is of interest to you (please see the Research Paper Topics document for approved court cases).
Here are some guidelines on your Critical Thought/Research Papers:
You must use the APA (American Psychological Association) style to write this paper. This reference is particularly important for quotations and your list of sources. Absolutely no plagiarism will be tolerated in this class. I will provide a link for an APA guide in the critical thought paper module.
Your critical thought papers must have a cover page indicating the course, instructor, your name, date, and topic. Also, a separate References is required.
Each paper should consist of five or more double-spaced fully written pages with one-inch margins (in #12 font size). Cover pages, abstracts (optional), and reference pages do NOT count toward the total number of pages in this assignment.
Though I am more concerned with how well you cover the subject, I will pay attention to grammar, spelling, punctuation etc.
In this critical thought paper, you must make an argument about either a policy issue position OR a court case (the list of approved policy issues and court cases is located at the bottom of these guidelines). If you are writing about a court case, you should identify and explain the decision of the court, and then provide your own argument about the outcome or impact of the case. Avoid summarizing the case at length, you are not writing a book report but evaluating the court’s decision (and the impact of that decision). Since this assignment is short, be concise in your analysis (it is advisable to take only one position in a paper of this length). Do not use long quotes unless you extend your paper (they will be counted against your length requirement).
Do preliminary research to ensure that you can find sufficient sources to support your paper (you should have at least five collegiate level sources and five in-text citations to support and develop your argument).

The highest court in
the United States of America is the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court is always thrust in front
of our faces when there is a vacancy. Over
the last few years, there have been three new appointments to the Supreme
Court; Justice Kavanaugh, Justice Barrett, and Justice Brown Jackson.
As we all know, the
nomination for such a prestigious seat is very political. I want to explore
this in the context of business. Should
businesses be concerned as to who it appoints to the highest court of the
land? We can assume that major
corporations should be concerned, but what
about our little “Mom and Pop” businesses?
These are some things that I want you to think about prior to writing
this final paper. We study cases all semester, but I find many students do not
understand how the law is applied by the Courts. You will explore this and apply this to your
writing.

The two plays to compare and contrast are Richard III – by William Shakespeare, Doctor Faustus – by Christopher Marlowe

In lieu of a final exam in this course, you will act as independent adult learners and select a course topic /case interesting to you, which will be thoroughly researched and analyzed in a 10-page final paper (references and title page not included; big graphs, pictures, and tables should be in a separate appendix page as well). The paper will be written in APA style of academic writing.
Paper Details: Please adopt the following structure to develop your paper:
1) An overview / problem statement/ definitions (if applicable).

Set the context for your experience: Briefly describe the two cultures of your “bi-culture”: e.g. the broader American culture, and your Black-American. Talk about your reasons for choosing to write about your life experience as a cross-cultural kid. Introduce the reader to your academic and personal developmental goals for this experience. What Biblical themes and instruction have helped you process your life experience as a bi-cultural person?
Question 1 Essay
Discuss the following questions regarding the differences between the cultural norms of broader American culture and your “2nd” culture with which you identify.
1. What are the differences between the cultural norms of the broader American culture and your 2nd culture? (Refer to the different cultural norm categories presented by Storti)
2. Give examples of how you have seen each of these cultural norms acted out.

As you recall your own experience, what are some of the blessings? What are some of the challenges that you may face? How has it shaped the person you have become? How will it inform your life as you move ahead on your journey?
