In this assignment, you will produce a 1500-word research paper based on the research topic you chose for Assignment 3: Annotated Bibliography.
The general topic for this assignment is:
“The impact of digital technology.”
You will need to significantly narrow down the topic to a specific focus that interests you. For example, you can explore the impact of digital technology on education, on political participation, on interpersonal communication, or on business strategies. You could also focus on the impact of digital media on different aspects of our wellbeing, i.e., social, psychological, physical, occupational, etc.
Based on the specific topic for your annotated bibliography, you are expected to locate this topic in the existing knowledge, identify a knowledge deficit, and make a new claim which will be supported by reasoned argument.
Please adhere to the following guidelines for the organization of your research paper.
Introduction:
Your introduction should sketch the typical rhetorical moves academic writers make as they find a position for themselves:
Describe the existing knowledge on a topic by way of summary and citations from other sources.
Identify the knowledge deficit, i.e., something missing, inadequate, or hidden in the view expressed in the existing knowledge, or something more complicated than that view.
Make a thesis claim that will address the gap (knowledge deficit) in the existing knowledge.
You must draw on at least one of the articles in your annotated bibliography to examine the existing knowledge, identify a knowledge deficit, and make a thesis claim.

Body Paragraphs:
The body part of your research paper—the main components of your paper—should provide argument and reasoning that justify the thesis claim you have made in the introduction.
Each paragraph of your body will need a guiding/topic sentence. A guiding/topic sentence functions as a way for the writer to signal to the reader that the paper is moving to the next section. Guiding/topic sentences should call up key words and phrases from the thesis claim and guide the reader’s interpretations of the details that follow.
Body paragraphs are also where you cite sources to provide evidence for your argument. There are three general ways to incorporate sources into your paper: summary, paraphrase, and direct citation. Decisions about which to use when are decided by the emphasis you wish to make on certain points. Summary and paraphrase are used to make more generalized claims, while direct citation is used to discuss details. A balance of all three is typical.
The number of body paragraphs for your research paper is best decided as you draft, consult sources again, determine what information you want to present, and decide what you want to emphasize.

Conclusion:
Students are often told to restate the thesis in the conclusion of their essay. The goal for the conclusion of a scholarly research paper, however, is not only to summarize the main points you have made in your paper, but also to provide avenues for other writers to create new knowledge from what you have said.
You want to refer to your thesis, reminding readers of the main concepts the paper has addressed. But you want to go further than that. Some further gestures you can make in your conclusion include: a statement of the relevance or significance of your argument, an indication of the limitations of your argument, a suggestion of areas for further research, and a presentation of solutions to the problem or a call for action.
Imagine your paper as part of a conversation undertaken by people who care about your topic. Your conclusion should include what you feel is most important—what you want your reader to remember most significantly.

This assignment does not require you to conduct primary research (surveys, interviews, etc.). You are expected to work with secondary sources (books, articles, government and scholarly websites, etc.).
To support your argument in the research paper, you can draw on articles in your annotated bibliography, other articles on our course reading list that you did not include in your annotated bibliography, or new sources you have found (minimum four and maximum 10 sources). When you draw on new sources outside the course reading list, make sure they are credible scholarly sources.
You are expected to construct a title and abstract for your research paper that reflect the focus of your discussion

Use secondary sources (the article you analyzed in the Module 3 research report and textbook readings assigned throughout the semester), as well as the primary source you analyzed in the Module 5 research report, to formulate a thesis and offer supporting evidence.

Here is how your essay should be structured:
Paragraph 1
Introduction that begins broadly and ends with your thesis statement. This paragraph should summarize ideas and evidence you will present in the rest of your essay, which will be based on findings from your Module 3 and Module 5 research reports. The thesis statement (underlined below) should feature your own argument/interpretation of facts and demonstrate analytical thinking. For more information about how to construct a thesis, refer to assigned readings and my Module 4_1 lecture on the topic. For background on analytical thinking, see assigned readings from Module 1.
SAMPLE INTRO PARAGRAPH: United States history has been shaped by individuals and groups fighting for causes, rights, and power. Throughout the twentieth century, military veterans, who consistently struggled for recognition and rewards, constituted an example of such a movement. In some moments, the government provided generous benefits such as free college tuition and health care, but in others, benefits were severely cut or limited. Postwar economic and social climates played key roles in shaping the nature of veterans’ demands, and the public and political reaction to them.
Paragraph 2
Review of the history of the social movement – drawing from the encyclopedia article and the Module 3 research report. Be sure to incorporate ideas based on the feedback I provided on your Module 3 research report. Note that this paragraph should contain at least one footnote in Chicago 18th style – with a citation for the encyclopedia article you are discussing. You may also include information from – and cite – The American Yawp.
SAMPLE TOPIC SENTENCE: Scholars note that a veterans’ rights movement has existed since at least the eighteenth century, though the issues, ideas, and tactics that shape it have changed over time.
Here, and throughout the essay, interior sentences of paragraphs should follow the roadmap laid out in the topic/first of the paragraph sentence. In this case, I would follow the above sentence with a sentence or two explaining the early roots of veterans’ activism, then have a few sentences on the main issues of focus, and the main ideas/arguments made by participants in the movement. I would also discuss tactics used by veterans’ rights activists at key moments like World War II and the war in Vietnam, i.e. lobbying in Congress for legislation, organizing mass protests to draw attention to poor treatment, etc. Remember, your topic sentence explains the main idea of the paragraph to come – the argument you will prove with the supporting evidence you provide. All topic sentences serve as “mini-arguments” that should relate to your introduction/thesis.
Paragraph 3
Analysis of the background, content, and intention of the primary source you examined in the Module 5 research report, connecting it with the social movement history discussed in Paragraph 2, and the essay thesis statement. Note that this paragraph should draw from #1-2 of your Module 5 research report. It should contain a footnote to the primary source in Chicago 18th

Paragraph 4
Analysis of connections between the primary source, the encyclopedia article, and the broader historical context. Note that this paragraph should draw from #3-4 of your Module 5 research report. It should contain a footnote to the primary source with proper citation information. It should also provide a broader context for the source and its time period via at least one footnote (formatted in Chicago 18th style) to the American Yawp.
SAMPLE PARAGRAPH 4: The 1923 New York Times article highlights how activism and debates focused on veterans’ benefits can be shaped by social and economic circumstances. Those who had served in the U.S. military during World War I, like their counterparts who had fought in the Civil War and Spanish-American War, faced economic and health challenges upon returning home and demanded assistance from their government. In the 1920s – in the immediate aftermath of war – the government proved willing to extend benefits like health care and pension payments. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, however, as the economy collapsed, generosity towards veterans decreased. In 1932, veterans would march on Washington in the so-called Bonus March, demanding immediate pay so they could care for themselves and their families. President Herbert Hoover reacted with hostility, as he mobilized military officials to clear former service members from outdoor areas near the Capitol. Conclusion, reiterating and fortifying your thesis/argument by making strong connections between the ideas presented throughout the essay.
SAMPLE CONCLUSION PARAGRAPH: Throughout the twentieth century, the economic and social circumstances of the postwar United States shaped demands from military veterans and how policy makers and the public reacted to those demands. Veterans were particularly successful at winning entitlements when the economy was healthy and the general public viewed wars favorably. But at other moments – such as during the Great Depression and the years after the unpopular war in Vietnam – perspectives of veterans and their rights to special benefits were less favorable. While veterans’ demands, and perceptions of them fluctuated over time, it is certain that former service members would not have access to the entitlements they enjoy today without the activism of the past century.

Submit a 5-7 page research paper (1,500 words minimum) about an individual who had a significant impact on US history from the time period covered by the course. The individual can be a political leader, a writer or an artist, or a figure from any other field (religion, business, education, etc.).
Your paper should be based on at least five sources, including TWO scholarly journal articles and TWO primary sources, and provide the following information about the person:

You write about any topics but please don’t write about abortions and adjacent social issues tend to be over saturated and over researched, so unless the issues you’re focusing on are extremely specific (e.g. the recent impact of legislation in specific states, which would involve a “how” formulation), you’re going to tend to run into a problem of exigency/finding your angle.
