This second research paper asks you to look at your linguistic community through the lens of one topic discussed in class, such as language revitalization, language and gender, language and globalization, language and race, etc. You can also choose a different linguistic anthropological topic but you will have to get that approved by me first.
I left the topic range for this paper open, since I want you to focus on an aspect of linguistic anthropology that sounds most interesting to you. Also, some of you have touched on a topic in your first paper that you can expand. However, I would strongly recommend that you post about your topic, with all details, in the designated folder in “Discussions.” You will receive 5 extra credit points towards your paper grade for this. This will give me a chance to make sure your topic is focused enough and to give you suggestions of how to make it into a fascinating paper! Also, read the suggestions I will give to your peers, since that will benefit you as well.
Requirements for the paper:
Include 4 academic readings and 2 class readings in your analysis.
academic readings are articles/books from the UWYO library or other scholarly sources.
class readings include anything we read this semester. My lectures do not qualify. If you use both class reading from the same source, for instance Ahearn’s Living Language, you have to use two different chapters.
The length is 8-9 double-spaced pages.
As before, you have to use any accepted style convention, such as AAA, APA, etc.
You can refer to your previous paper, if it supports your argument, but do not copy and paste large amounts of text.
Again, we will do a peer review for this paper and follow the same procedure. I will email you new peer review partner, though.
Please see our “Syllabus” for deadlines!
A rubric will be posted again by the time you start writing your paper.

Information Kiosk Research and Programming
A kiosk is a small structure with one or more open sides that is used to vend merchandise or services. The kiosk design must be flexible enough that the final product can be used in a variety of locations and venues (e.g., shopping mall, trade shows, etc.). The kiosk design must allow for information content but you can determine the layout and format of that information (i.e., posters, computer monitors, interactive displays, etc.). The kiosk is essentially the product or housing that supports the information.
The kiosk must:
Entice the public to examine the information
Represent the client and organizational mission
Fit within 50 square feet of floor space
Not exceed 7 feet 6 inches in height
Be self-supporting (i.e., must stand on its own)
Week 6 – Research and Programming Create a document that includes the following:
1. A written design concept. You can use the exercise in the Week 5 lecture to guide your process.
2. A client profile in which you include/identify
The organization (of your choice)
Its mission
Why the social cause is relevant
What it means to you personally
3. A problem statement
4. Goals and objectives
5. Spatial Requirements. List at least five spatial requirements. Spatial requirements for this project will vary based on your client selection and the goals and objectives. They won’t necessarily be “floor” spaces but could include counter tops and vertical spaces for interactive displays and signage.
6. Case Studies (3). Conduct three case studies. For each kiosk, identify the kiosk, include an image and 2-3 sentences of why it is relevant to your project.
7. Thumbnail Sketches (10). Create at least ten (10) thumbnail sketches in which you diagrammatically explore how the kiosk spatial requirements can be arranged in plan and elevation view. These are not technical floor plan or elevation drawings, but spatial diagrams exploring relationships, design principles, and place elements.

Virtue Ethics and the good life
Week 13 Discussion
*Don’t forget to reply to at least one classmate.
Meet Julie and Mark, two siblings who are vacationing together in France. One night after dinner and a few bottles of wine, they decide to have sex. Julie is on the pill and Mark uses a condom so there is virtually no chance that Julie will become pregnant. They enjoy it very much but decide to never tell anyone or do it again. In the end, having sex brought them together and they are closer than ever.
1. Did Julie and Mark do anything wrong? Explain your answer and provide your moral reasoning. Pay close attention to the story (i.e. pregnancy is not possible and they are happy with the result).
Is There Anything Wrong With Incest? Emotion, Reason and Altruism in Moral Psychology
2 What does David Hume say about virtue and emotion (sentiment) (p. 404)?
3. What does sentiment or emotion have to do with the example above? When you decided about Julie and Mark, were you using reason or emotion?
