Assessment Description
In 10-12 slides, including the title and reference slides, outline your research proposal to present to your classmates. Speaker notes are required to provide additional information for your bullet points. Please see the attached document, “PowerPoint Instructions,” for further tips.
The PowerPoint will need to include:
Introductory section: including your problem statement and your hypothesis.
Method section: including your description of the participants, apparatus/materials/instruments, procedure, and design you anticipate using.
Results: discuss how results would be gathered for which statistic was used, the alpha level (.05), critical value, and degrees of freedom. (Do not create fake results.)
Discussion: requires 4 paragraphs that include:
Describe what it would mean if you obtained significant results. Then describe what it would mean to obtain nonsignificant results.
Discuss how your study followed APA ethical guidelines, by discussing the use of an informed consent form, debriefing statement, deception, and obtaining IRB permission.
Discuss any limitations in your study (e.g., possible confounding, lack of random assignment or random sampling, etc.)
Conclude with a discussion of future studies that could arise from your study.
Appendices: two figures, OR two tables, OR a table and a figure. For example, set up a table focusing on participants, include your individually created survey, use/cite tables from a previous study, refer to Chapter 14 summary table, include Informed Consent figure and/or Debriefing Form figure. Writing Assignments
There are two writing assignments worth 100 points each. The purpose of the essays is to provide students an opportunity to discuss a key concept or topic in American politics and to show a basic understanding of academic research and reporting skills. Students should offer evidence for their arguments. Thus, submissions that are more comprehensive and detailed will earn a higher point total. Each assignment should be a minimum of 750 words. Submissions MUST include a work cited page (Note: there must be a parenthetical citation at the end of each sentence that contains information from a source). The textbook can be one of the sources included on the works cited page (sources other than the textbook may/should be used as well).
You should use New Courier or Times New Roman, 12 point font, double-spacing, and one-inch margins on all four sides of the paper. The assignment is to be formatted according to the Modern Language Association (MLA) style which includes works cited page but does NOT include a title page. Students should research this style in order to properly format the assignment (see the Purdue Online Writing Lab).
All writing assignments will be analyzed using SafeAssign. Essays that contain plagiarized material will receive a significant reduction in points or a zero. Students may receive a failing grade in the course for submitting plagiarized material. Do not cut and paste information from an online source or copy information directly from the textbook without using quotations and citing the information.

Writing Assignment 1
Select ONE of the following topics to discuss in Writing Assignment 1. The writing assignment should be a minimum of 750 words. You should use information from the textbook and outside sources to complete the assignment in the textbook. You must include a Works Cited page and in-text citations. Watch a conversation with Jeffrey Rosen (the Director of the National Constitution Center) and read the essay by William Marshall (on the Interactive Constitution website) about the expansion of presidential power. Identify and discuss the five reasons for the expansion of presidential power? The video and essay were published towards the end of the Obama Administration. Discuss each reason with respect to the Trump Administration and the Biden Administration. Have these two presidents continued the expansion of presidential power? [Be sure to provide examples.] Do you think modern presidents are becoming too powerful or do you think the expansion of power has been necessary? Make sure to explain your reasoning.
The Founding Fathers wanted the courts to be protected from politics. In what ways was the judiciary designed to limit the role of politics? Are the courts completely immune from politics in their work? Why or why not? What role does politics play in Supreme Court confirmation proceedings? One of the distinguishing characteristics between humans and other forms of life is our inclination, and ability to FIND problems to solve. Effective problem solvers know how to ask questions to fill in the gaps between what they know and what they don’t know. Effective questioners are inclined to ask a range of questions. For example: requests for data to support others’ conclusions and assumptions—such questions as,
“What evidence do you have…..?”
“How do you know that’s true?”
“How reliable is this data source?”
They pose questions about alternative points of view:
“From whose viewpoint are we seeing, reading of hearing?”
“From what angle, what perspective are we viewing this situation?”
Students pose questions, which make causal connections and relationships:
“How are these people (events) (situations) related to each other?”
“What produced this connection?”
They pose hypothetical problems characterized by “iffy”-type questions:
“What do you think would happen IF…..?”
“IF that is true, then what might happen if….?”
Inquirers recognize discrepancies and phenomena in their environment and probe into their causes: “Why do cats purr?” “How high can birds fly?” “Why does the hair on my head grow so fast, while the hair on my arms and legs grows so slowly?” “What would happen if we put the saltwater fish in a fresh water aquarium?” “What are some alternative solutions to international conflicts other than wars?”
Some students may be unaware of the functions, classes, syntax or intentions in questions. They may not realize that questions vary in complexity, structure and purpose. They may pose simple questions intending to derive maximal results. When confronted with a discrepancy, they may lack an overall strategy of search and solution finding.

Film is a very powerful tool which can, at times, portray events as no literature can. Cinema can also distort and falsify the past. This assignment requires you to write a critical analysis of one of the films listed on the following pages. The components of the paper are as follows:
Introduction – Your opening paragraph should indicate the title of the film you chose, and what issues the film focuses on which are related to the Holocaust.
Body – The main part of the paper should address how the film depicts these issues related to the Holocaust. You need to use the textbook from this course along with primary and secondary sources addressing the topic of your movie choice. This part of your paper should address the following:
What is the general plot? This should be addressed in just a few paragraphs.
What kind of film is this? A documentary? A government-sponsored movie? Is this a propaganda film?
When was the film made? In what country? What was the intended audience for the film? How do these factors influence how the film is presented and its message?
Who is the director? What experience did the director have with the Holocaust? Does he/she have any bias concerning issues related to the Holocaust?
From whose perspective is the film presented? From the victim? The persecutor? The bystander?
Is the film historically accurate? To answer this, you may have to do some historical research into the period under investigation.
Does the film strive for realism, or is it melodramatic? Does it try to manipulate the viewer? If so, how
Are the characters presented with depth or are they one-dimensional?
Look beyond the plot and characters and analyze underlying themes and issues addressed by the movie. What political bias does the film have? Does it focus on gender issues? How?
Does this film add to our understanding of issues related to the Holocaust? If so, how? If not, how does it detract from reality?
Conclusion – Your concluding paragraph should contain your overall evaluation of the film in terms of to what degree it helps our understanding of particular issues related to the Holocaust.
