For your last essay, you will write a 3-5 page research paper. Your topic on the matter must be arguable. You can find lots of ideas in the textbook. This research paper is to allow you to show how you have grown in your writing and analysis throughout the course. You also should show what you have learned.
Essay Requirements:
Your essay must be at least 3 but no more than 5 pages long (not including your works cited page).
You must use MLA format throughout (including a works cited page). Click the link to go to the Purdue OWL website for help with MLA.
Your essay must analyze and research an arguable topic. Be specific and close read your pieces of evidence (sources).
You must have at least 3 sources, but no more than 5 sources. Include primary and secondary sources. The college offers a free online library service with access to several journals and other types of sources that you are welcome to use. All other sources MUST be credible. No Wikipedia, Sparknotes, etc.

Very often people who became rich have made efforts to engae with “high culture,” something that might bring their family more prestige than money alone. An earlier example would be that of the family of steel magnate Andrew Carnegie, who created “high culture” institutions such as Carnegie Hall with his newfound fortune.

ASSIGNMENT 3:
A main idea in this lesson is that class position is not simply measured in terms of monetary capital, but that it also has much to do with cultural capital. Can you think of some good examples of people who you have encountered (whether personally or in the media) who have much more of one than the other? In some people’s comments in the discussion boards for the last lesson there were suggestions that wealthy people, notably celebrities, as being associated with “high culture.” This is sometimes the case — we can see examples of some stars (such as Steve Martin, Robert DeNiro and others) who are known as collectors or modern art–but it’s important to distinguish the differences between money and “having class,” as expressed in Fussell’s examples of the old, “out of sight” wealthy.
But please note that being rich and having expensive things is not the same as “high culture,” which refers to things that are refined and not simply “bling.”

ASSIGNMENT 4:
Over the last decades a major trend in the business world is that of corporate mergers — when one giant company buys multiple smaller companies or even equally sized rivals. Can you think of how people you know have been affected by a merger of a company in terms of their employment? Or can you think of how your own personal lifestyle or your cultural tastes have been affected as “your” media companies, telephone, internet provider or cable services, etc. have been bought out, and you’ve been forced to adapt?

Otherwise can you think of other corporate mergers that you’ve read about it or have found to be interesting/good/bad?

ASSIGNMENT 5:
Your assignment for Lesson 8 is to post on the discussion board a link to an article that you find on the internet along with at least several sentences that explain why you chose it. You should also comment in some substantial way on two article someone else posts (read the article and comment on it, not just say “I like/agree with this article.”
One option is to find a news article or other website article that address one (or more) of the issues discussed in Chapter 5 in Grazian’s book. Alternatively, you can try to find an article that relates to the topics addressed in Peterson’s article “Why 1955?,” in which he outlines five factors that affect the final version of a cultural product. They are: Law and Regulation – Technology – Industry Structure – Organization Structure – Occupational Careers
For instance, the news article this week addresses the issue of technology and its impact on musical production.
If you choose this one you can look on the net for an article that discusses how one or more of these these factors affects the production of a specific television program, album, movie, video game, etc.; It’s probably easiest to find things related to the first two factors. This will involve some creativity on your part–perhaps you can look up some favorite band, show, movie, etc., and try to look in articles for signs of one of these five factors.
I’ll post some examples to show you the kinds of things I’m looking for.
In looking for articles you should consider using Google’s “news” feature–click the “news” tab instead of the regular “search” button.

ASSIGNMENT 6:
Find an article that relates to one of the topics that’s addressed in the lecture and associated readings, and then explain in at least a long paragraph why you find the article to be relevant to the issues discussed here. You should make reference to the section of the book, and post the web address. Also, you should make a substantive comment on someone else’s post – that’s to say not just “I think so to” or “great article”

Topics include:
– limits to ownership of media outlets
– deregulation of media
– net neutrality
– regulation of advertising – are there controls on what is fake?
– regulation for “National security” reasons
– informal boycotts of products
– regulation of media in other countries
– censorship of software and computer programs by governments
– diversity vs. property rights
– the Fairness doctrine
– regulating morality, such as critiques and labeling of certain products
– ratings systems
– outlawing or banning certain kinds of media materials (such as sexually explicit ones)
– regulation of violent content

ASSIGNMENT 7:
Drawing upon the lecture and Chapter 8 in the Grazian textbook, post an extended example on the discussion board of how you or someone else has come to view a cultural format — films or TV shows, pop music lyrics, the image of a celebrity — in a different way as they have moved to another situation or context.
For instance, can you think of how you really enjoyed an artist/movie/TV show/etc. at one point, and then developed a new view of them at another point? Alternatively, you can post another example of the sorts of topics that are addressed in the readings. You are encouraged to comment on others’ postings. You will be graded for participation

To complete this final portfolio and course reflection, you will choose ONE of the following questions to answer in 3-4 paragraphs. In your response, you should refer to sources from the class that are relevant. This is an informal writing assignment, so no citations are required.
Option 1: What is an event that you have studied in American history 1877-2004 that has shaped your life? How? Did you know about this event before taking this course, and, if so, how did studying formally at a university change or influence your understanding of it?
Option 2: In what ways have you improved as a writer, analyst, and collaborator? What brought about those improvements? Point to specific experiences, readings, assignments, or discussions in this course.
Option 3: Take a look at the twelve learning outcomes in the syllabus (page two of the syllabus). Making specific references to your work in this course, explain how you have progressed toward achieving at least three of those outcomes.
Option 4: Paint a textual landscape of your learning throughout the semester. What learning and skills would you use as “landmarks” within this landscape? Why?

Introduction
In this class we spend a lot of time reading about and listening about and thinking about states in general. That includes thinking about the comparative method and how to compare and contrast states in meaningful ways that tell us something about the causes of their differences. We also spend some time looking specifically at Florida, which makes sense since our college is located in Florida and many of you either currently call the state home, or have done so in the past. In this assignment I would like to give you an opportunity to learn more about a state of your choosing, and then we will use the comparative method to ascertain differences between your chosen state and Florida and then try to explain the causes of those differences. Please note you CANNOT choose Washington, D.C. for this project as Washington D.C. is not a state. You can choose Washington state (i.e. the one up in the northwest) but please make sure you are actually describing Washington state and not Washington, D.C. if you choose to do that one. It’s probably best to avoid it altogether by choosing one of the other 48 states to compare to Florida.
The total paper should be between 2300 to 2800 words. That is nine to eleven pages or so if you are double-spacing and using standard fonts, but it’s the word count that matters. This is a substantial assignment; for many of you it might be the longest paper you have yet written in college. The good news is that it’s a very structured assignment, and if you instead think of it as three smaller papers (see below) it is not nearly so intimidating!
Components of the Paper
There are essentially three components to this paper. Feel free to structure your paper in this order or in any other way you see fit:
1) Description of the government structure and politics of the state you have chosen.
2) Compare and contrast that state with the government and politics of Florida.
3) Explain why you think those differences exist – what are the root causes of them?
Section 1 – Description of Chosen State
This section is going to comprise the bulk of your paper. I would like you to describe for the reader (that’s me, in case you didn’t know) the following about your chosen state: how does it divide power among its three branches? Does it seem to have a particularly powerful governor or legislature? How does the legislature work? Are there term limits? How long do people serve for? Who holds the real power in the state? What is the partisan breakdown of the state? Does one party seem to win more often than another? What is the political culture of the state? How does its history seem to affect its current politics? Who are the major interest groups or economic sectors that power the economy of the state? What are the big issues currently in state politics there?
I would expect this part of the paper to be about two-thirds of the length of the paper in total and it’s mostly descriptive. I’m not really asking you to analyze much here. You’re gathering the information you’ll need for the next two sections.
Section 2 – Comparison with Florida
In this section of the paper I would like you compare your state with Florida on a number of dimensions: demographics, economics, government structure, political culture, important interest groups, and party balance. You’re not necessarily trying to explain the differences yet (that will be Section 3), but since there’s some overlap it’s also totally okay if you combined the two sections.
Section 3 – Explanation of Differences
In this section of the paper I would like you to hypothesize about the sources of the differences you found in Section 2. What might explain why your chosen state and Florida are different on these dimensions? Is it political culture? History? Geography? Demography? Climate? For this section I am grading you based on the plausibility of your analysis, along with the quality of any evidence you present for it.
Number of Sources
I am asked pretty much every semester some version of the question “how many sources does my paper need to have?” This is a weird question to me, since the honest answer is “how ever many you need to write a good paper”, but I get why students ask it. A little guidance is always a good thing. Let me say this, then. It would be very hard to do well on this paper with less than five academic sources (i.e. not Wikipedia, Investopedia, and other encyclopedic sources). You probably will want more than that, but at a minimum I’d be aiming for that. Once you hit five sources that doesn’t mean you are done doing research – if three of your sources are all about one part of the paper then you’re going to need more in total to write a compelling paper.
Citations/Plagiarism – Read this carefully
You should be using academic sources for this paper. That means that while you can consult Wikipedia as a start, you should be using additional sources, possibly including newspapers, scholarly books and journal articles and government websites. If you are going to use web-based sources, make sure (as always) to consider who the source of the website is. Are they credible? Do they have expertise? What’s their angle or bias? MAKE SURE TO USE IN-TEXT CITATIONS in your paper. I don’t particularly care what format they are (MLA vs APA vs Chicago vs SPEBSQSA – I might have made that one up) just so long as (a) you stay consistent in the paper and (b) I can figure out how to find each source myself if I so choose.
Remember that whenever you use someone’s idea, either in a direct quote or reworded yourself, you should use a citation. Using someone’s words or ideas without citation is PLAGIARISM and doing so will lead to a minimum of a zero on the paper and quite possibly failure of the class. Please include a Works Cited page IN ADDITION TO the in-text citations. Failure to do so will result in a 10% penalty.
