Speech Outline on “School Bullying”
Hello!
Please review the attached file which is an “example outline” of what my teacher is expecting on this outline. Also, please read ALL of the instructions listed below. All instructions are broken down of what is expected for introduction, 1st main point, 2nd main point, 3rd main point, and conclusion.
This is a outline on “school bullying” for my speech class, I will be presenting this as a speech.
Thank you 🙂
Instructions:
The sample outlines should be a guide for you on the next two pages of this module. Last week we did a deep dive into each of the main points. So, please remember that the speech needs to have
1. Two or more emotional appeals that are highlighted in the outline (pathos) -we will review this next week.
2. Three or more logical appeals that are highlighted in the outline (logos)-we will review this next week.
3. Three or more appeals to your own credibility that are highlighted in the outline (ethos) -we will review this next week.
4. At least five credible, published sources throughout the speech (at least 1 expert testimony, 1 statistic in the problem or causes, 1 story of someone/thing impacted by problem/cause).
6. Problems, Causes, and Solution(s) are well-substantiated as main points.
7. Solution must have a legislative solution and a personal call to action.
You are supposed to place the two-sided appeal in the most controversial area of your speech. SO, it just depends on your topic. For some of you it will be in the problems, or the causes, or the solution. ALL speeches need to have an opposition argument, otherwise, your speech becomes one-sided and does not provide the conflict I am seeking for these speeches. The two-sided appeal should always be integrated into the main point that has the highest amount of controversy.
1) The organization pattern is now changed to a typical “problem-cause-solution”.
2) There needs to be a two-sided appeal (aka: counterargument) in which you use a citation against your side and a citation for your side.
3) The last main point is your CALL TO ACTION
The introduction for your persuasive speech will need to have the following;
1. Attention-Getting Device. The most effective AGD, for persuasive, is a short story (very brief) about someone or something that has been impacted negatively by the problem.
2. Reveal the topic: this is a good place to have a 1-2 sentences that illustrates how significant the topic is.
3. Credibility statement: why did you choose this topic?
4. Thesis: This is where you have a clear argument with a claim and a warrant in one sentence. Your opinion/argument should be clear and easily understood. Thesis should answer the following question: Why should this problem be solved?
5. Preview statement: Preview the first three main points of your topic in one sentence.
The 1st MAIN POINT:
Make sure the following questions are answered to have a substantiated problem:
1. Who/what is hurt by the issue?
2. How long has the issue been a problem to the who/what?
3. Where does the problem exist?
4. Is the problem getting worse? or Is it at its worst?
You need to have 1-3 credible, a published source in this main point (all sources should be recent, last three years). You can have more published sources. Also, remember that you need to have three points of logical reasoning throughout your speech. I encourage you to have them throughout the speech. So, it is recommended that you one point of logical reasoning per main point. You also need to have two emotional appeals (one positive, one negative) throughout your speech. Is this a place you want to put an emotional appeal? Last, you need to integrate a two-sided appeal for ethos. The two-sided appeal is supposed to integrate within the main point that is the highest point of controversy. Is this point the highest point of controversy? If so, then add your two-sided appeal here.
The 2nd MAIN POINT:
The cause is the reason why the problem exists in the first place. In order to have a substantiated main point on causes please make sure you have the following questions answered:
1. What is the direct cause of the problem
2. How does the “cause” create the “problem”
3. Have there been any attempts to get rid of the “cause” before.
4. Please describe the cause in detail
You need to have at least one credible, published source in this main point (all sources should be recent, last three years). The two-sided appeal is supposed to integrated within the main point that is the highest point of controversy. Is this point the highest point of controversy? If so, then add your two-sided appeal here.
The 3rd MAIN POINT:
You will have two solutions: a legislative solution and a personal solution (call to action).
1. Legislative solution is a law that can be passed, changed, or overturned by the government. This means that you must have a topic in which the government (federal, state, or local) can pass, change, or overturn a law to help fix the problem and overcome the cause. You will need to show that your legislative solution will work. Demonstrate how it will solve the problem and overcome the cause. Ways to demonstrate that your solution will work in order of preference:
Modeling: You can find a similar solution that has already worked and “model” your plan to do the same. The logic is If plan A worked for them, then Plan A will work for us.
Expert(s) testimony: Cite a plan that has already been proposed to solve the problem you are focused on. Explain why “they” and you think it is the best solution to solve the problem.
Demonstrative: Create your own solution, just make sure that it is logical and will solve the problem. Cite some evidence that backs your claim it will work.
2. Personal solution is what can be done by the average citizen in the USA to help solve the problem. Personal solutions can be:
sign a petition
write a letter to a representative
join a movement
boycott a product/service
volunteer
donate money
change a behavior
Social media posts (Spread the word)
and etc…
You need to have at least one credible, published source in this main point (all sources should be recent, last three years). The two-sided appeal is supposed to be integrated within the main point that is the highest point of controversy. Is this point the highest point of controversy? If so, then add your two-sided appeal here.
The Conclusion:
As is the tradition in every speech the conclusion is the shortest. You will need to have three components in your conclusion:
1. Review Statement: Summarize, in one sentence, the three main points of your speech.
2. Reinforce the thesis: Demonstrate how your speech proved your thesis, which is your main argument.
3. Closing device: you want to tie back to the story that you began with in your AGD.
