Effective Listening
What distinguishes listening from hearing? How do your listening behaviors change in the following situations: A) at a concert, B) in class, C) at the dinner table with your parents, D) in a doctor’s office? What are the distractions and other barriers to listening you might encounter in each setting? What might you do to overcome the barriers to effective listening in each situation?

Part A: 500 words, plus or minus ten percent
In the final part of her paper, Cherry argues that moral anger can express “agape love”. Describe this conclusion. Explain her argument in favour of it.
Part B: 1500 words, plus or minus ten percent
In that final section of the paper, Cherry is making a move in a conversation, the conversation about the social, moral, and political value of anger, and the nature of anger. In this second part of the paper, you should make a creative, argumentative contribution to that conversation, one which responds to or in some way builds on the work that Cherry has done.
There are a few different ways this contribution of your might look. But one important constraint on your contribution is that it involve just one or two arguments that you develop in detail, and not a large number of separate lines of argument. Here are some examples of what you might do. You do not need to do any of these in particular. But I am including them here to give you some options, and to help you understand what an appropriate scope would be for your contribution.
Example 1: You might make one argument. You might argue that Cherry’s conclusion is mistaken because a different account of the nature of moral anger is the correct account of the nature of moral anger, and that the correct view of the nature of moral anger problematizes her view about what moral anger can communicate.
Example 2: You might make two arguments, entirely unrelated to Cherry’s, which support the conclusion that moral anger can express agape love.

Florence, Italy, is known as the “cradle of the Renaissance” because many great artworks of the period were commissioned and created there. To achieve the ambitious new goals of Renaissance art, sometimes a competition was held to find the right artist for the job – very much like what happens today!
One example is the north doors of the Florence Baptistery. In the 1300s, the south doors were created by Andrea Pisano, consisting of 28 panels depicting virtues and scenes from the life of St. John the Baptist, contained in quatrefoil designs. Almost 100 years later, in the early Renaissance, a competition was held to find the right artist for the job of completing the north doors. The artists vying for this commission were to create a relief sculpture in bronze depicting the story of the sacrifice of Isaac from the Old Testament, contained in the same quatrefoil shape. In this story, Abraham brings his son, Isaac, to be sacrificed on a mountain, as God commanded him. Once Isaac is tied up, an angel appears and stops Abraham, telling him that he has proven his faith and no longer needs to do this, and he sacrifices a ram instead.
Below are the two finalists in the competition. Both reliefs contain the same subjects: Abraham and Isaac, the angel, the ram, two servants, a donkey, and some landscape elements. However, there are differences in composition and emotional content. Look at both images carefully and consider which one you would vote for if you were a judge in this competition. Choose two companies that sell the same kinds of products

over the past year, 5 years, or whatever time frame you can find and feel
fits). Talk about how they go about getting customers (commercials,
promotions, social media).
Your choice: Your third area of focus is up to you. Choose something
you find interesting about the particular industry or the products. One
example might be “work culture” and you could talk about the way the
companies hire people and what the work environment is like. Or “future
opportunities,” where you focus on potential growth/expansion. Pick

Choose your topic/companies wisely. You should pick products
that the audience will be interested in. You also want to make sure there
is enough information on your companies for you to fill the entire 5-7
minutes.
Presentations have three parts: an introduction, a body and a
conclusion. By having a clear introduction, body and conclusion it helps
your speech flow better for the audience. When not organized properly a
presentation will simply sound like a list of facts and statistics and
will bore your audience.
A visual aid (PowerPoint) is required. You should also use
graphs and charts to help demonstrate certain numbers and ideas. Estimated
7-10 Powerpoint slides. Do not read from your Powerpoint! Do not put full
sentences or paragraphs on it. No videos. Stick to key words/phrases, photos,
graphs, charts, etc.
Presentations should be 5-7 minutes. You MUST
stay within the time limit. If you are under or over, points will be
deducted. Speeches that are well short (less than 5 minutes) are unlikely
to earn you a passing grade.

conversation with the audience

Exam Content

Evaluate the failed negotiation in Part 1 by completing the following:
Examine the sources of conflict/challenges in this negotiation (communication, personality, emotions, cultural barriers, power dynamics, etc.).
Assess each person’s negotiating style according to the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument.
Evaluate each participant’s skills through two of the following lenses: verbal and nonverbal communication, empathy, active listening, or building rapport.
Analyze the negotiation techniques each participant used in this negotiation. Consider rhetorical devices, logical fallacies, and psychological tactics.
Explain whether negotiation techniques were effective.
Identify whether either participant committed any breaches of ethics.
Part 2: Mediation – this is the paper that you will draft (incident report)
Review Part 2 of the case. You, as a mediator, with the University’s Human Resources Department, have been called to make a second attempt at mediating the conflict. Before meeting with Shania and Wilbur to formally begin the mediation process, your job is to collect as much information as you can about the situation and devise a strategy for mediation, incorporating your expertise in mediation as well as the details you gather from the transcripts of the initial unsuccessful negotiation attempt and the unsuccessful mediation attempt.
Draft an HR incident report on the conflict and make recommendations for how to best resolve the dispute. Complete the following in a Microsoft Word document:

available to you, find a text that you’d really enjoy analyzing. Choose a text that stimulates your thinking
about communication in ways that invite your scholarly scrutiny. You’ll need to obtain an objectified version
of this text (i.e., a videotape copy of a movie or TV show; an audiotape or
podcast of a radio show; downloads of online content; the full collection of
