Select a culture from our course that appeals to you as a research topic. Look through all chapters (10, 15-19 and 33-38); you might find the art of later chapters more interesting!
This paper is not meant to be a book report or biography. Instead, identify a common thread, a theme to write about. This could involve specific events and people, politics, religion, etc.
Once you have researched your topic, create a thesis statement that outlines your main ideas. This should be a claim you are making and supporting with your examples and sources. Think of it as the answer to your research question, not the question itself.
Don’t forget formal and contextual analysis! The terms on your Art History Worksheet will help you build each body paragraph about your examples.

False Memories
Paper should be an APA-style research report describing the experiment we are conducting as a class on false memories. Your paper must include the following:
Title Page
Abstract
Introduction
Method (with Participants, Design, Materials, Procedure subsections)
Results (includes Figure)
References
Discussion
You must also include a single Figure of the mean lure false alarms for each of the four conditions (I WILL SEND IT TO YOU)The Figure must be done in APA style and must be referred to in the Results section. The entire paper must follow APA style as indicated by APA guidelines as described in class and in Chapter 8 of your text. You will be graded on accuracy and completeness of content, writing style, and APA style.
I will send two documents including an example of how the paper should be outlined , as well as an example of how the results should be. You are required to cite all three background articles for this experiment which I will also send all three. In addition, you must find one additional relevant paper on your own to cite in your paper. There are many other papers published on this topic – if you need help finding a 4th article, please let us know and we will help you find one.
• Roediger and McDermott (1995)
• Olszewska et al. (2015)
• McBride et al. (2019)
Therefore, your paper must include at least four citations and four references. You may include additional related articles if you wish. In other words, more than four citations is ok, but points will be deducted if the required citations listed above are not made in your paper and listed in the References.
You may NOT use quotations from the articles, with or without quotation marks. Be sure to make citations when you discuss information from the articles or define concepts (e.g., defining precrastination). but listed below are some APA rules you should keep in mind while you write (points will be deducted for violations of these rules):
• the title page, abstract, introduction, references, figure caption, and figure each begin a new page
• begin the Introduction with the title of the paper, centered at the top of the page – do not type “Introduction”
• each page must be numbered in the upper right
• double space the entire paper
• use 1 inch margins on all pages – the running head and page numbers are included
• numbers below 10 should be words, 10 or above should be numerals (except when a number begins a sentence or is used as a measurement – use words to begin a sentence OR in the Abstract – use only numbers in the Abstract – use numbers when indicating timing and other measurements)
• method and results sections should be written in past tense – also use past tense to describe previous research (the research will already be completed when you hand in your paper)
• the figure must be computer-generated
• follow the sample papers (Chapter 8 and the lab manual) as a model and all other stylistic points discussed in class

Men on Boats Script Analysis
You are the stage manager of Jaclyn Backhaus’s Men on Boats and rehearsal begins in two weeks. You are reading the script to prepare yourself to begin rehearsal. As you read, you will record design elements you foresee coming up in the rehearsal process. This is called a script analysis. You can reference the example shown below, but I invite you to explore your own Stage Management Style and create your own format.
You must include a minimum of 20 entries and include at least one entry from each design area (scenic, props, costumes, lighting, sound). Please note that recurring items cannot be logged more than once. For example, if a character has a sword, that sword can only be recorded as one entry, it cannot be recorded every time the sword is referenced.
Try to be as specific as possible when completing this assignment. The process of analyzing the text will enable you to communicate with the director, designers, production department heads, and others. Your attention to the details of the storytelling will prepare you to successfully communicate and collaborate in rehearsals and beyond.
The script for Men on Boats is available in the Week 2 Module.
Please upload this assignment as either a PDF or a Microsoft Excel file. DUE on Canvas by 2:00pm on Thursday, April 14.

ENG 1520 FINAL RESEARCH PROJECT
A well-formed argument, one that will persuade readers that your point of view is based on solid evidence, presents a carefully chosen and developed claim (thesis) with persuasively compelling reasons and evidence to support that claim.
For this project you will have a minimum of eight pagesto take a stance on a debatable issue, or propose an idea, and support it with credible researched evidence. Your thesis/main claim should not be in the form of a question, should not waver, and should not be an ‘I believe’ statement; it should confidently state the claim you want your audience to accept.
You will be required to cite a minimum of five crediblesources using correct MLA formatting and style guidelines. The topic and claim are completely in your hands for this project, so be sure to choose a topic that is: debatable, sufficiently narrow, and interesting.
Make sure your topic is arguable. No subjective arguments (“This is better than that”), or statements of fact (“Global warming affects the planet”). No arguments rooted in conspiracies or religion/faith as well, as these types of arguments often involve asking your reader to take a leap of faith with you. Your argument must be provable with credible evidence from reliable sources. Aim for a debatable issue that will give you some room to argue.
If you’re having trouble settling on a topic, check out the OCC Library databases for some ideas. Opposing Views in Context and Points of View are great resources for exploring ideas. Choosing a topic is one of the most important stages of this assignment. You will be living with this topic for the remainder of the semester so make sure it’s something you’re passionate about.
The content of your essay should be substantial, well researched, and interesting. Try to know as much as you can about your topic so that you may present an in-depth analysis that persuades your reader to accept your claim.
Please note that this project will also require a 3-5 minute presentation. You may use PowerPoint slides, infographics, images, and/or video to present the key points of your essay to the class. Your creativity is welcomed.
IMPORTANT! Keep the following in mind as you compose your essay:
• Don’t rely on one to two sources, distribute all your sources throughout the essay
• This is a research project, not a rant, or an exploration of your personal feelings. Make a claim and support it with evidence.
• Avoid a string of quotations/paraphrases; the majority of your essay should be your own words
• Do not write an essay that is purely informational; be BOLD, take a stand on an issue or propose a logical idea/solution to an issue. Papers with no definite stance will not succeed.
• Lengthy quotes and paraphrases should be avoided
• I (the instructor) am not part of your audience; think of your audience as skeptical, but rational people, that are interested in knowing more about your issue
Useful Questions:
1. Is there an arguable thesis statement?
2. Does the title capture my readers’ attention?
3. Does the introduction capture the readers’ attention?
4. Are there any instances where the supporting evidence is irrelevant?
5. Is supporting evidence sufficient and compelling enough to convince the
audience?
6. Am I using appeals effectively
7. Have I written with my audience in mind?
8. Does my conclusion succinctly wrap up my argument?
9. Is MLA style used correctly?
Oral History Project
Please, for this project you are to
find an individual who is at least one generation older than you, conduct an oral history interview, then write the “story” of their life. You are to use the standard oral history interview format, an example
of which is provided in the attached Oral History Association guidelines. As
part of the Oral History Project, you must provide a typed
transcript of the interview questions and responses to show that you followed
the proper format. Using information
obtained during the interview, you will then write the
“story” of your individual. This will be the easy
part. The transcript has no page requirement other than that it obviously must
be long enough to serve as the basis for a 5-7 page essay. The
“story” paper must be typed, a minimum of 5 FULL pages to 7 pages in
length, double-spaced, 12-point font, with reasonable margins.
