For centuries, people have believed myths and misconceptions about psychological disorders and the people who suffer from them. Modern psychological research has allowed us to correct some of these misconceptions. As a result, many people have changed their ideas about mental and emotional disorders. Think of a common misconception you have observed in society or in your personal experience. How could information from research be used to change people’s views of psychological disorders? How can this information help us to better understand people who experience mental and emotional disorders?

LEARNING ACTIVITY #3: ETHICS AND PROFESSIONALISM
1) Write a page and a half in which you summarize the main theoretical propositions in the ethics theories in the literature idenitified in this session.

You will write a research paper about School Social Work practice. You are allowed to choose from any topic that you have studied over the course of this semester. Describe the topic in detail. TOPIC IS:::: Promoting Social-Emotional Learning for Children with Special Needs.

Specifications:
1. The research paper is to be no less than 5 pages not including the title page and reference page and no more than 7 pages in length. Use 12 font, double space, one-inch margins. APA format must be used in all aspects of the paper.
2. The research paper must have a title page and reference page in APA style.

3. The paper will answer the following questions, you are not limited to these questions:
A. What are specific roles school social workers fill in schools, in the community, and with families of the students that they work with?
B. What at-risk population of people are served by the school social worker in this setting (think tier 1, tier 2, tier 3)?

The research paper must reference at least 5 professional journal articles (no older than 6 years) in the body of the paper with in-text citations in APA style. For this paper, choose a current event that involves the depiction of a racialized group. Preferably, the event will be something that you will have an opinion about or will relate to. Find several articles from vastly different news sources on that current event. Preferably, find at least one article from a very liberal news source, one article from a very conservative news source, and at least two articles from moderate news sources. If available, also find a more extensive transcript of an interview with the important actors in the event (perpetrators and victims, if available). Put links to the articles into your document, with strategically paired off articles put together in sequence. Number the articles clearly. For the “flying while Muslim” version of this activity that I have done several times with students at a variety of schools, I chose articles about an event on November 20, 2006, when several Imams were removed from an airplane. The articles were from the following sources: Muslim American Society, Ann Coulter, Conservative Voice, New York Times, and Washington Post. I also provided a transcript of an extensive interview with the leader of the Imams (the airline declined the interview) from Democracy Now. The articles are provided at the end of this essay.
Activity Description:
Begin by discussing where you typically get your news and list all sources you normally consult. Do you remember the specific event you have chosen, and if so, what do you remember about the event?
Next, read the articles and note two things:
1. What are the details of the event that you learn by reading their article? List the important details of the article (similarities/differences, language/framing).
2. What do you think is the author’s bias?
3. How did you identify the author’s bias?

2. How does the news media support racial profiling?
