Focus: Compare and contrast the print version of a short story to the video adaptation of the same story.
Topic Guidelines: Choose from the short stories listed in the assignment guidelines of IR 3.

In IR 3, you chose an assigned short story (and corresponding video) to work with for the Comparison and Contrast Essay. Review your original notes on the story and review your feedback on IR 3 once again.

STEP 2: Develop a Focus
Before you begin drafting your essay, develop a focus for your paper. This focus will tie your ideas together.
You might consider some elements of theme, character, scene, suspense, foreshadowing, etc. Consider if/how elements differ between versions. Do they alter the theme, the conclusion, or the interpretation? Do the versions create a different tone or mood? Are the two versions two entirely different pieces of literature?
Remember, the essay is an analysis, so you’ll need to do more than simply identify elements. You’ll need to analyze and discuss their importance in the stories, using evidence from each to support your claims.
For instance, it’s not enough to simply state that the plot differs slightly between versions. Move beyond basic identification and instead analyze the meaning and effect on the story, on the audience, etc.
STEP 3: Draft the Comparison and Contrast Essay
Write a comparison and contrast essay that incorporates a minimum of three literary devices present in your chosen short story and the corresponding video.
Keep in mind that while your essay may focus on only one literary device, your chosen literary device will inevitably impact other aspects of the story. For instance, an essay that focuses on the setting might examine how differences in setting change the theme, plot, and/or characters. An essay that focuses on characters might examine how differences in characters create a difference in mood, conflict, and/or theme.
Literary devices that may be incorporated into your essay:

While you may explore other literary devices in your essay, keep in mind that you have already received feedback (in IR 3) regarding these devices. Explore other literary devices only if you feel confident examining them and/or have discussed your ideas with me.
Remember, don’t randomly choose three points to compare and contrast. The literary devices and your discussion must be tied together in some way. This focus will be evident through your thesis and as you compare and contrast each device in your paper.
What to Include in the Essay
The essay should include a concise opening to introduce the topic and summarize the story and its theme. The opening should also include a concise, well-written thesis to identify the focus of the paper.
Develop the body of the essay in a point-by-point style. This means that you will write about the first literary device in both the text and video version then move on to the second and third devices in the next paragraphs. (Do not write about all key points of the text version then all key points of the video adaptation.)
The concluding paragraph(s) of your essay should explain the conclusions you’ve reached after analyzing both the text version and video version of the story.

Your essay must also include at least two direct quotes from the stories. (You may cite the text version, video adaptation, or both.) Remember to effectively integrate the quotes into your writing and to properly cite through MLA citation. (Both in-text citations and a Works Cited are required.)

It is one thing for “ethics committees” to construct guidelines concerning what is permissible or not permissible in healthcare, but one of the most critical issues in healthcare is accessibility to service. Several years ago, a medical expert commented on why he thought universal healthcare works well in France.
