Case 13.2: Olympic Rowers
In the 1930s, rowing was the most popular sport in the country and was dominated by elite East Coast universities like Cornell, Harvard, and Princeton. However, in the 1936 Olympics, the University of Washington team would represent the United States in Berlin, Germany. The leader of the college team, Ulbrickson, had a program with a number of talented rowers—most were not elite or wealthy, but rather were sons of loggers, farmers, and fishermen. Finding the ideal makeup of members for a successful rowing team is a complex process. A great crew is a carefully balanced mix of rowers with different physical abilities and personalities. To find that magic mix, Ulbrickson experimented with different combinations of rowers, putting individual rowers on different teams to see how they performed together. But it was more than just putting the right abilities together; it was finding the right chemistry, and the Washington team would go on to decimate the competition.
At the Olympics, a key oarsman fell ill and could not compete. But the team pulled together and faced this new challenge by defeating England in its preliminary heat and made it to the finals. Still, they were in the worst lane in the final race, which put them at a two-length disadvantage; they experienced a delayed start because they missed the signal that the race had begun and their sick oarsman was barely conscious. But they came from behind and won Olympic gold.

historical content and ask you to demonstrate historical skills. All essays are evaluated using a rubric Download

Each essay is worth 8.3% of
your final grade.
You need to score at least 70% on
each essay to achieve mastery.
These essays are graded by
a faculty member.
You can expect a grade within five business
days after submission.
You have three attempts
to complete each essay.
You can resubmit each essay only if
you score below 70%.
In general, essays should be about 1,000
words in length. This is a guideline, not a hard
rule. Essays significantly less than 1,000 words do not usually go into
enough detail, and essays significantly longer than 1,000 words often go
into too much detail or fail to make coherent points concisely.
Remember, you will use primary and
secondary sources from the textbook as evidence to support your essays.
Using other sources is prohibited.
General Rubric for
Assessment Essays

A essays (90%-100%) have
many or all of these characteristics:

Thesis: The essay has a clear
introduction and a thesis that accurately conveys the main points and
arguments contained in the body of the essay.
Evidence: The essay contains numerous examples of appropriate, specific,
historical evidence. Direct quotes
drawn from the text are indicated as such using quotation marks, and are

B essays (80%-89%) have

Introduction
It can be said that one of the most profound organizational influence challenges for health care managers is that of balancing stewardship and fiscal responsibility. Conflicts of interest, billing practices, fraud, and abuse are just some examples of ethical issues related to the organizational influence of finance. The concept of justice plays a central role in ethical finance decision-making and management. As leaders attempt to balance market justice and patient justice-related priorities, they must still consider and protect the justice of their staff and community in the process.
It is also important for you to understand the value of using formal ethical decision-making processes for managing ethical issues within the health care organization, and how these processes differ from business processes in other industries. By developing an ethically focused mindset, adopting a personal moral stance, and choosing a personal ethical philosophy, you are establishing a strong foundation on which to build formal decision-making processes and steps. Common errors, or decision traps, often occur in decision-making processes and impede success. You must be able to identify and reflect on various decision traps in order to support the development of your own ethical decision-making skills and awareness.
Of course, it is equally important to have a strong, ethically oriented organizational culture to support leader success in meeting these challenges with integrity. The health care manager plays an integral role in implementing policies and procedures, as well as modeling an ethical mindset and behavior.
Preparation
For this assessment, imagine that you are a department manager in a mid-size health care organization that is in the process of undergoing a major change (perhaps a merger, buy-out, or restructuring). Your director has called a meeting of all department managers to develop a strategy for taking the organization successfully through the change. A major component of managing this change is safeguarding the organizational culture, which is currently very positive and based on ethical principles and practices. In addition, the organization has quality ratings in both patient safety and organizational integrity.
At the end of the meeting, the director asks each manager to draft a strategic change management plan to help them guide their department through the change. To help you get started, the director has provided a statement to be used in each plan. Each plan must consider the role of ethics and ethical management in organizational culture. You must bring your plan to the next strategy meeting in two weeks.

Use your best analytical toolset (and terms) to convey the shape, volume, rhythm, line, craftsman’s marks, etc. Imagine that the reader doesn’t have an image in front of them, and try your best to draw them a picture with your words.The third part of the paper will be your opportunity to put the object in context. For this exercise, imagine that your piece is on display in a museum and you are writing an explanatory placard that hangs beside it.
