Why
politics, religion, and violence?
Politics, religion, and violence are major catalysts for social
constructs and cultural change, positive and negative. If we are to construct or create positive
societies today, we must understand something of these catalysts, for example,
the impacts of various forms of politics, religion, and violence. In this assignment you will be just starting
this process by identifying the
characteristics (or
kinds) of politics, religion and violence in this one text. N.B.: We are only interested in the
characteristics—we’re not interested in individuals in the text, the author, or
even specific events that take place in the text-we’re not even interested in
the interconnectedness between politics, religion, and violence for this
particular assignment (so you will want to treat them separately in your
paper)-just the different kinds of politics, religion and violence you find in
the work.

Assignment
objectives-Although this is a rather multi-faceted project, here are a few of
the learning objectives to help you conceptualize the assignment. In the course of completing the paper
students are expected to:

Demonstrate
the ability to understand and follow all directions exactly-in fact
understanding the directions is a major part of the assignment in that, if you
are not sure what a particular aspect of the directions means, then you will

and religion, you will have to read through the document multiple times looking
for various kinds of politics. violence, and religion that are sometimes in the
background. Also, you may want to expand
your ideas about what constitutes politics, violence, and religion. For example, many consider slavery as an
institution a form of violence, or animal cruelty-think outside the box. Again,
start the assignment early so you have time to ask any questions.
Present
their findings in a clear, concise, unbiased, and academically acceptable
formal paper in their own words. The directions below are designed specifically
to accomplish this. If all of the directions are followed, and you do your own
work, you will be fine.

Specific Requirements for Writing
Assignments
In addition to the
following requirements, students should be aware that all writing in this course
is considered formal scholarly writing and that incorrect spelling, grammar,
usage, syntax, and vagueness will be heavily penalized.

1. Except for the
introduction and conclusion only use the past tense. We do this primarily because when writing
about the past it is best to use past tense.
Also, writing in past tense helps to keep the writing objective rather
than subjective (keep in mind this is not an opinion piece, you are only
identifying the kinds of politics, religion, and violence you find, you are not
making judgments or giving your personal opinions on them).

2. Never use vague terms
such as “thing(s)” or “etc.” in the writing for this
course. You want to be clear in your
writing.

3. Write only in the
third person for this assignment. This
really helps you to be objective!

4.
Introductions/conclusions must be brief–no more than eight lines of text–and
reflect the specific nature of the assignment.

5. None of the writing
assignments are comparison in nature. Do not compare the cultures you are
writing about with any other culture-ancient or modern. This is to keep you focused only on what is
in the document itself. You won’t want
to compare the kinds of politics, religion, and violence with any other culture
or any other time. Also, the word
“today” should not appear in your paper.

6. None of the writing assignments are narrative
in nature. Do not tell the “story” or summarize any of the sources or
section of the sources we use for the writing assignments. Do not refer or
mention any specific people or events in the paper except for mentioning the
author once in the introduction and once in the conclusion (the author should
not be referenced at all in the body of your paper). For this
assignment we are not interested in any of the
specific people or specific events in the text.

characteristics, we are not interested in them per se, and your citations will

How to write
without referring to the author, the text, specific people, or specific events.

Kings were very much characteristic of politics.
They had the power to make any law or proclaim anything they pleased within
society and the people were to obey him (15). Kings had the power to do what
they pleased but this could lead to the abuse of power. A king was expected to
be a wise and giving ruler to his people, but he could abuse this power by
taking children away from their families, or by being an arrogant person (126).
The people did, however, have the power to overrule a king if they believed he
was unjust (133). Some people could also challenge him to try to gain his power
and status (5). Women also had authority, sometimes as the consorts of kings,
