1. Initial Post (due this week)
Define denial/denialism and identify three of your own examples of denial (they can be from your own life or someone else’s). In 300 words or more, explain how denial can appear rational to the person engaged in it. Also consider how denialism might impact our ability to think critically.

Topics to cover: college accreditations, granting college credits for prior learning assessment, granting college credits for CLEP scores, the role the community college plays in transfer credits, transfer policies (specifically Lampitt Law in NJ)

A few words on a written assignment:
1. Each assignment you write should answer
a precise question. Assignments
should not simply summarise your notes.
2. Plan each assignment before you write.
Prioritise your arguments and choose
the best illustrations
3. Your opening sentence and first
paragraph should define the problem you are
tackling. Avoid any banal statements.
4. Do not be afraid to disagree with what
you imagine your professor’s views
might be. Professors often ‘take a line’ to
draw students out. State your own
case.
5. Arguments have a structure: Offer a
proposition. Provide supporting evidence.
6. Consider if an opposing argument is
appropriate. Provide supporting evidence
as appropriate. Conclude with a reasoned
choice or synthesis.
7. Never plagiarise.
8. Always give full references in a correct
form.
9. Use the Library wisely. You cannot
depend on getting a particular book or
article just when you want it. Browse along
the shelves for books and journals
and check the new books display.
• Check the computer to see if an item is
on short loan, or to see if you
can reserve it in advance.
• Cooperate with fellow students by sharing
books or photocopies.
• Use the subject search facilities on the
computer to find relevant
materials.
• Follow up the footnotes and
bibliographies of the books and articles
you already have.
• Familiarise yourself with primary source
materials, and don’t always
rely on secondary sources or commentators.

What are foundations in critical thinking? (Descartes Meditations 1, 2 and 3.)
Assignment Part a. 800-1400 words total. Write a text on Descartes for a discourse community you belong to (online, social media, family, friends, social group, student group)
Critical thinking foundations. Dreams. The argument for the existence of God. Discourse community. Rhetorical analysis. Genre.
Possible areas of focus. You can choose any of these or combine as subtopics; also introduce your own topics and subtopics.
a. Write a personal reflection on your critical thinking foundations in comparison to Descartes; write about your own experiences thinking about these matters. Also look at the method of radical doubt; the dream argument; or the wax argument; or the questions around “what am I that thinks?”
b. How does the “I think, therefore I am” (Cogito ergo sum) foundation also become the foundation of human rights and of the argument against slavery. We noticed that the “I think therefore I am” has no race, no gender, no class. See the Kant argument against slavery in window above
c. Compare the three historical foundations: (1)God. (2)”I think therfore I am.” And (3) evolution. Write about your personal experience of each of them, and your family’s view of each of them; based on your experience, and reading, how do you evaluate each “foundation.” Which is your foundation of thinking, knowing and experiencing? Or do you another one?
d. How is the future unknowable, given that Descartes “I think therefore I am” exists in the present. Does the future even exist for the “I think therefore I am”? Does the past exist?How is it then we fear future unhappiness? Should the past bother us? For instance, if someone hurt me in the past, what does the “cogito” say about it’s effect on me in the present? Why should I blame others in the past, if the past doesn’t exist?
Assignment Part b. 800-1200 words total.. Write a review of 2 secondary sources on Descartes, text, document, or image. Secondary sources include all files linked on the Blackbloard scroll. You can also find your own secondary sources on relevant topics or subtopics.

You are going to gather some data and discuss your result, interview of survey 10 people and ask each person the first three terms or words that come to mind whent they think of each of these age groups( each interviewee will give you 12 words): childre, teenagers, middle-ages adults, senior citizens.
