Despite the similarities between the Renaissance and Baroque, there were major shifts in how religious imagery was depicted during the Baroque era.

Module 2 – Case
BAROQUE ART
Assignment Overview
After mastering our knowledge of Renaissance art, it is only natural to progress to the Baroque era. Many art scholars view the Baroque style as a natural continuation, or rather an evolution, of the Renaissance. Both styles have similar characteristics, such as the use of perspective or religious themes, but also differences such as the light contrasts, movement, and dramatic elements, to name a few, that appeared during the Baroque period. We will continue discussing these differences and similarities throughout this Module.
The Protestant Reformation and the Roman Catholic Counter-Reformation had major influences on the world out of which Baroque art would emerge. Artists and art became, in part, an extension of the church, which employed them to promote faith within an institution that was destabilized at the time. Despite the similarities between the Renaissance and Baroque, there were major shifts in how religious imagery was depicted during the Baroque era.
Case Assignment
In our current Case assignment, we are going to compare two Baroque artworks, Bernini’s sculpture, Ecstasy of St. Teresa, and Caravaggio’s painting, Crucifixion of St. Peter.

Write a 3- to 4-page paper in which you provide brief information about the Baroque era with a contrasting reference to the Renaissance and role of the church; abbreviated biographical background on the artist; a brief description and interpretation of the two works; and your personal opinion on how Bernini and Caravaggio differently conveyed faith and commitment to the church based on your comparison of the two masterpieces.
