Business Writing Principles
Single-space text
Headings and subheadings—not a term paper
Proper grammar – punctuation, tenses, spelling
Appropriate labeling – titles
Appropriate formatting – horizontal and vertical spacing
Any Excel spreadsheet contain gridlines
***** This should not read like a term paper. This is a business document fit for your administrator. Ask yourself if your project is “meeting ready” or if it is the type of example you would want to add to your portfolio to show a potential employer. If the answer to your question is “no”, then it is not ready to be graded.
Students are required to write a short paper (3 to 4 pages) summarizing an economic article (of their
choice) on a topic related to those covered in class (fiscal policy, monetary policy, business cycle
fluctuations,…). Sources to find such articles include NBER Working Papers
(https://www.nber.org/papers), Journal of Monetary Economics
(https://www.journals.elsevier.com/journal-of-monetary-economics/), Review of Economic Dynamics
(https://www.journals.elsevier.com/review-of-economic-dynamics), American Economic Review
(https://www.aeaweb.org/journals/aer), American Economic Journal: Macroeconomics
(https://www.aeaweb.org/journals/mac)…
The goal of the assignment is to read the paper and try to understand its (research) question and its
conclusion (how they got to these conclusions – what approach/methodology they used). You should
write a summary of those questions and findings. Importantly, a significant part of your paper should
focus on relating the article to what we discussed in class i.e. to the models we covered, their
assumptions, their implications…
Addition Note:
Thank you. You can work on that paper. However, the paper you chose is very short. Therefore, I expect you to put much more effort on linking the content of the paper to what we cover in class. Alternatively, you can choose another paper for approval.
The goal of the assignment is to read this paper and try to understand its (research) objective and its conclusion (as well as how they got to these conclusions – what approach/methodology they used). You should write a summary of those objectives and findings. Importantly, and in particular for the paper you have chosen, a major part of your summary should focus on relating the paper to what we discussed in class i.e. to the models we covered, their assumptions, their implications… Whether/how they are similar (reach similar conclusion…) or how/why they differ ….

Objective: Using the style and philosophy of a selected American author, students will address a contemporary problem and propose a solution in a letter or op-ed. Each of the authors is responding in some way to the era in which they lived, the problems and questions that most plagued society at the time. In this assignment, you will select one of the authors from this course and a contemporary problem that interests you and would interest the author.
For example, you might ask: How would Ralph Waldo Emerson respond to a current environmental issue facing our community? How would Poe solve the opioid crisis? What would Washington Irving recommend as a way to address the political divisions in the nation?
In the Letter to the Editor, you must
1.
Write in the style of the author you selected
2.
Maintain the authors philosophical disposition
3.
Explore possible solutions to the problem
4.
Argue for one of those solutions.
Based on your article assignment on myths related to the Founding Fathers (see syllabus) found under the course content, please discuss the ways that narratives about early American history that don’t always convey the the broader, more inclusive context that needs to be addressed.
Carefully explain what the narratives are and any supporting evidence for these interpretations.
What arguments can be made against these particular narratives about American history?
In what ways do particular narratives emphasize aspects of American history that fuel particular slanted and/or partisan interests?
How do sources contradict these narratives and/or provide additional important perspectives?
Which of the examples that you have provided do you think is the most problematic and the one that most ignores other important aspects of the full picture? Why?
Your paper should be a minimum of 2.5 pages in length and should use appropriate forms of citation. You should have at least one citation for the article that you are required to use. Please note that papers will automatically be evaluated through turnitin.com for plagiarism. Any paper with a similarity rating over 25 percent will receive a zero as per the syllabus policies on academic honesty.
