The article “Last Rites for Indian Dead: Treating Remains Like Artifacts Is Intolerable” by Suzan Harjo criticizes Indian remains destruction. Besides, she emphasizes the need for Congress to implement a bill that limits the showcasing of American Indian families’ remains in governmental organizations, universities, and museums. Harjo claims that American Indians are perceived as the United States’ archeological property. For example, she presents an example from her family, indicating most of the remains of her relatives are confined in the Smithsonian Institution together with thousands of American Indians who were desecrated in the 19th century (Harjo 3). This has a toll on their families because most victims were murdered in non-combat situations and decapitated for museum and scientific studies across historical societies and educational institutions.
Besides, Harjo indicates that this is an act of dehumanization against Indian Americans because their remains are displayed against extinct creatures. Moreover, the author employs multiple persuasive strategies such as credibility, audience values, and tone to convince the readers on how the remains of Indians should be respected and returned to their families by being pulled from learning institutions and museums (Harjo 6). For example, Harjo’s formal, serious, and sympathetic tone highlights the impacts violation of Indian remains has caused to families and the general community over the years. Also, the statistics and facts that the author uses are convincing because they support her arguments and reasons Congress should ensure that the remains of Indians are returned to their kin (Harjo 6). Thus, this convinces the viewers to understand and support her stance and arguments.
Ultimately, the article qualifies as a vital academic source for research because it contains detailed and authentic information. Besides, I can incorporate it in my paper since it provides significant insights into the history of American Indians, especially their racial background in America from the 1800s to the present (Jacobs 2). Also, the article presents different perspectives on the protection rights of Indian remains and their ceremonial tools through the enaction of bills. Consequently, the article can elaborate on state laws that protect ethnic communities such as American Indians and their effectiveness in the current society. As a result, it will provide actual data and evidence of American Indian history to my paper, and I would prefer to make it one of the academic sources.
