How significant is the detective’s distrust of authority? How is it displayed in his actions? What does this distrust tell us about the larger themes in the text(s)?

. Choose one of the following topics and compose a thoughtful, well-argued essay in response. Be sure that you have a thesis! To support your arguments, cite specific textual evidence from the primary and secondary texts we have read. All papers should include, at minimum, research from Black Mask magazine, The Big Sleep, or both. You may use other research as necessary.
1. In The Big Sleep, Philip Marlowe says, “Cops get very large and emphatic when an outsider tries to hide anything, but they do the same things themselves every other day, to oblige their friends or anybody with a little pull.” Consider the hardboiled detective’s attitudes toward established systems of authority. How significant is the detective’s distrust of authority? How is it displayed in his actions? What does this distrust tell us about the larger themes in the text(s)?

2. Discuss how women are represented in hardboiled detective stories (for example, Mildred Guerney in “Black Shadows” from Black Mask or the Sternwood sisters in The Big Sleep). Consider not only how gender is represented but also why it is represented this way. What do these representations tell you about the genre and its view of the world?

3. Examine how the author of the hardboiled detective story uses the mystery genre to communicate broader social/political messages and themes. Discuss what you think the author is intending to express, how successful he is at expressing it, and why the mystery genre may be an especially appropriate place to communicate these types of messages.

Pay attention to similar themes between the readings for the selected weeks – this will be the basis of your paper. How do the articles connect to each other? Compare and contrast the arguments.

Pay attention to similar themes between the readings for the selected weeks – this will be the basis of your paper. How do the articles connect to each other? Compare and contrast the arguments.
Choose an overall theme/topic for your literature review and formulate an argument (thesis statement).
Your Literature Review should include the following:
Introduction: Introduce your topic and your argument. What is your paper about? What topics and sub-topics will you review?
Body: This should be split up into sections. Including titles for each section will aid in your writing, as you will know where to include certain information/articles/arguments. It will also improve your paper’s ease of readability.
Conclusion: Summarize the points raised in your paper. Discuss the significance of your topic. Why is this important for scholars and students of Transnational Africa & Globalization? Identify where gaps exist in how a problem has been researched to date.

COVID-19 Experience

Research Paper: COVID-19 Experience
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought the entire world to its knees. Schools and businesses were forced to close, and instruction went virtual. Entire countries went into lock-down and people were mandated to wear face masks and social distance to minimize the spread of the virus, as hospitals were overwhelmed and the death toll, unimaginable. One and half years on, the problem is still as dire as it began, especially with the Delta variant which is highly transmissible and more deadly. Compounding the problem is a third of eligible Americans who have not been vaccinated. Some for health or religious reasons, some for historical reasons and others, for no reason.
1: In your opinion, why has the problem of the virus continue for this long, and why is the vaccination debate so complex?
Describe in your own words your experience during the pandemic and how it has affected you personally. Also, describe how it has affected your family and friends, and most importantly, your education.
2: Your paper MUST be at least 4 pages long and should not exceed 6 pages, double spaced.
3: Total points for the research Paper = 150 points, therefore, the paper MUST be well written, devoid of typological (spelling) and grammatical errors, as well as incomplete sentences and contractions.
