Racism: An Analysis and Proposal

Readings: The references need comes from this articles.
• “Shooting an Elephant” (required)
• “Racism and Oppression” (required)
• “More Light! More Light!” (optional)
• “Ask an Expert: How to Talk to Kids about Race” (optional)
Film:
Fruitvale Station (required)
Task: Write a thesis-centered essay that analyzes the sources of racism and proposes solutions to them. You might want to describe a specific example of racism or provide a surprising statistic in the introduction to catch the reader’s attention; you could develop the causes of racism in the body of the essay; and you could discuss and develop possible solutions toward the end of the essay. For full credit, you are required to submit:
• The outline you created in class
• Rough drafts
• Self- and Peer-Evaluation Forms
• Final draft
Submit all parts as one document, with the final draft on top, i.e., the first page of your document should be page 1 of your final draft. Paginate the final draft only (in MLA style, as you did in Assignment #1).
Audience: peers, instructor
Objectives:
• To synthesize the readings with your own ideas about and experiences of racism.
• To analyze causes of racism.
• To propose possible solutions to racism.
• To use the MLA method of documentation
Evaluative Criteria:
• The essay effectively examines possible causes and develops possible solutions to racism.
• The essay uses an effective introduction that includes a clear main‑idea sentence.
• The essay integrates the class activities, the film, and the readings (in order to get a passing grade, the above-named required readings must be incorporated into the essay).
• The essay uses an effective conclusion.
• The essay uses MLA documentation competently.
• The essay is free of major mechanical errors.
• The essay consists of one or more rough drafts and a final draft (an essay with no rough drafts included will receive no credit).
Do Nots (will get no credit):
• Do not consult the internet for this assignment. If you do it anyway and end up using any information from a web source in your essay, you must acknowledge the source (see “Notes” below). If you don’t, then it will be construed as plagiarized.
• Do not summarize the readings.
• Do not summarize or provide background information about the film.
• Do not provide historical references in the body paragraphs (e.g., slavery or imperialism in Burma).
• Do not write about the authors.
• Do not try to interpret a quotation.
NOTES:
* If you quote from a source other than the assigned readings, you must acknowledge the source. After the quotation or paraphrase, provide the name of the website in parentheses (if it’s an online source, the most likely source), for example, (USAtoday.com) or (Wikipedia).
* I don’t recommend that you waste your time on sources other than the assigned readings or film because your grade will be based on your inclusion of the assigned material only. Anything else is simply the icing on the cake.
DUE DATE: APRIL 1

Sample Body Paragraph
The body of the essay is the most important part, so that’s what we want to deal with first. As stated above, the first part should explain (roughly 50%) and the second part should illustrate (roughly 50%). Here is a sample body paragraph written by a fellow student:
The media is also a root cause of racial oppression. Movies, books, and magazines usually label African Americans and Hispanics as the bad guys. Albert Memmi astutely observes that news stories are “diluted poison” that readers are constantly bombarded with (254). It is said that the majority in jail are black and Latino. If statistics prove this to be true, can it be because they don’t get fair trials? In the movie The Green Mile, John Coffey is a prisoner on death row. He is convicted for the brutal murder of two little girls, a crime he did not commit. Even after Paul Edgecomb, a guard at death row, finds out that Coffey is not the cold-blooded killer he is accused of being, he is still unable to acquire Coffey’s freedom, knowing that the court and the people would never allow Coffey a fair trial because of his color. Things like this happen even today; someone gets shot, and one is likely to hear a racist comment like, “Must’ve been a black guy.”

Notice that the first sentence of the body paragraph announces the cause—the media. Notice the transition “also” (we can assume this is the second body paragraph). Notice the half-inch indentation, and notice the double-spacing. Notice that the quotation doesn’t have to be a full sentence or more; it can be a short phrase. Notice that the title of the film is italicized. And notice the parenthetical citation (page number in parentheses). Generally when it comes to quoting, fewer words are better than many. Also, choose your quotations carefully: find phrases that are catchy and stand out, like the quoted phrase above, “diluted poison.” What a wonderful way to refer to news stories!
One part of the student paragraph above provides general explanatory information about the media and how it plays a role in racism; this information comes from common knowledge (whatever the student personally knows about the topic). The other part provides two examples, one from “Racism and Oppression” and one from a film.

promote health equity.
How does competency in systems leadership facilitate change management and disaster
management?

Answer the questions below completely and fully for full credit. This requires a minimum of two substantive paragraphs for each answer (standard 5-7 sentence paragraphs) with a minimum total of 300 words for the combined paragraphs (not including the references). Support your answers with source credits (citations and references). Use APA formatting for all your work including double spacing Both within and between paragraphs.

Include the Bolded questions above each answer.
Discuss the literature on split-brain and lateralization of function. What does the research tell us about each hemispheres ability to function independently (e.g., cognitively, creatively, etc.) and in unison? What are the implications for the cognitive neuroscientist in terms of research?
Discuss one of the psychiatric disorders. Be sure to address both the physiological and behavioral aspects of the disorder (signs and symptoms, biochemical or genetic theories, etc.), and pharmacological and behavioral treatments for the disorder. What is the role of the biopsychologist or neuroscientist in this type of research?
Discuss sleep in terms of the normal sleep cycle. Be sure to address the stages of sleep and physiological correlates associated with each stage. How does dreaming fit into our conception of a normal sleep cycle? Address theories of dreaming. What are the consequences of disruption of sleep?
Critically evaluate the theories that have been used to explain emotion. Which do you think is the best theory and why?
What brain regions and neurochemical systems are known to be involved in the regulation of sleep? What is known about the neurobiology and endocrinology of circadian rhythms?

explains and evaluates the arguments made in the “letter to the editor”

1. The essay should be double-spaced using a standard 12-point font (Times, Times New Roman, and so forth).
2. Paragraphs should consist of grammatically correct sentences that address a single idea/argument. In other words, do no combine arguments from the “letter to the editor” since these are independent premises that do not depend on the other arguments.
3. Your essay needs to clearly identify what the main conclusion of the argument the “letter to the editor” is making and to assess each argument, especially in terms of any informal fallacy committed as well as an explanation as to how such a fallacy occurs. This does not mean every argument in the letter is fallacious.
4. Your essay should clearly take a position on the letter that was written. For instance, do you agree with the author and think she has made a strong argument? Do you agree with the author and think she has made a weak argument? Do you disagree with the author and think her argument is weak? Regardless, your essay will serve as evidence to substantiate your claim and in doing so you will be assessing the argument. [Note: it does not matter if you actually know anything about the city, the point is whether the intermediate arguments that serve as premises for the main conclusion are adequate to support the claims being made.]
5. Both The Critical Thinking Toolkit and Bad Arguments may be helpful in your critical analysis and evaluation. Please specifically cite page numbers if you rely on these sources as follows (Title page numbers). Any other sources consulted must have a specific intertextual citation (Author’s last name page number) and a complete citation in a Works Cited page.
6. Your essay should have an Introduction that provides the audience with the issue question that motivates the writing of your essay, and other relevant information about what the essay is doing, where it is heading, and how it plans to achieve its goal. Likewise a concluding paragraph is necessary that pulls your overall argument together.
7. In between, the body must analyze and evaluate the argument given in the “letter to the editor.” What type of argument is the author making? If inductive, is it an analogy, a generalization, or a causal argument? If so, your evaluation will differ depending on the type of inductive argument. Should an argument be deductive, your evaluation must clearly demonstrate formally or structurally whether it is is valid or invalid.
8. Pay attention to paragraph transitions. Avoid listing or bullet points.

Based on the results, how civil is your workplace? Explain why your workplace is or is not civil.

Post a brief description of the results of your Work Environment Assessment. Based on the results, how civil is your workplace? Explain why your
workplace is or is not civil. Then, describe a situation where you have
experienced Incivility in the workplace. How was this addressed? Be specific and provide examples
PLEASE READ BELOW

The result of my work environment assessment was 71= moderately healthy
work environment. For the most part, my workplace is civil ( I work in a
psychiatric unit). One time when I was working as a charge nurse I had to talk to another nurse because he did not medicate his patient properly and the
patient seemed to be in distress. Pt was screaming in Spanish and not able
to sleep ( I work the night shift). I told the nurse and he ignored the patient’s
pleas. I had to be firm and tell him that he needed to call the doctor and get
an order for Ativan (medication we give for acute anxiety episodes) for that
patient. He got pretty angry and told me not to tell him how to manage “his”
patients. I tried to smooth things over with him, in order to maintain the
peace, but I did text the manager right away and she told me she will talk to
him. I do not know if she did. I’ve been avoiding working with him as much
as possible ( since we do have a self-schedule). We did work together for
one more shift after that incident, but we avoided each other throughout the
shift. He is known for that kind of behavior.
