The Innovative Ways To Help To Fight Against Food Waste

Argumentative
Research Essay: Open topic/choice must be food related (5-6 full pages no
counting the WC Page, written in third person,
We never know
what the future will bring, but we do know that we will need food. Many of the
authors we look at, identify problems that will remain at the forefront—climate
change, global hunger, and labor injustice, food waste, GMOs, to name a few.
They also discuss potential changes that might lessen the negative impact of
food production on the environment and that might bring food production to the
urban centers where food is in short supply. Still, even as we think of
solutions to existing concerns, new problems will inevitably emerge. In fact,
the authors we have read suggest as many questions as they answer.

Here are some
to consider: Is the future of food going to be organic? Will it rely on
conventional, industrial approaches? Or will we adopt hybrid approaches? What
ethical principles will guide food policy in the future? What kinds of moral
choices will individuals make? Will they see food choices as moral choices more
or less than they do now? What roles will innovative approaches and new
technologies play in feeding the population? Should we focus on futuristic,
potentially expensive, inventions or return to the basics? What roles will
corporations and industrial farming play in the future of food? What roles will
small-scale farming and local businesses play? Will worker justice and the
impacts of food production on historically oppressed groups be considered? Will
democracy emerge as a positive force in bringing about food equity? Will people
care more about global hunger in the future than they do now? Will the global
hunger crisis ever become a thing of the past? Will biotechnology like Vertical
farming or Hydroponics change conventional farming?

Drawing on all
course readings, documentaries, class discussions, and your own research, make
an argument about a food related issue, and propose a solution to the problem.

Reflect on what
we have previously discussed in this course and your own previous work, keeping
in mind the following rhetorical elements:
·
Purpose: (What are you trying to accomplish?)
·
Audience/Relationship to the Reader (To whom are you
addressing your argument?)
·
Context: (What are the influencing factors surrounding
your argument, for both audience and you?)
·
Voice: (What tone are you going to use, to persuade your
audience most effectively?)
Your argument should employ one or more of the following
three elements of the rhetorical appeal:
·
Ethos: Appeals to the character and expertise of the
writer or speaker
·
Logos: Appeals based on logic, reasoning, and evidence
concerning the subject
·
Pathos: Appeals to the beliefs and values of the audience
Develop your
argument using the methods and techniques discussed in class and your readings,
employing at minimum the use of:
·
A strong thesis (claim)
·
Warrants/evidence to support thesis
·
A strong conclusion
All your claims
ought to be fully developed and backed by authoritative sources. Be sure
you cite your sources according to the proper MLA format guidelines. These
include:
·
Direct quotations
·
Paraphrased statements
Sources: Five to eight
credible, reliable, sources.

discussion post/peer response

** Please Read the full description. you will be reading “the ruined lady” by Thomas Hardy and responding to a classmate
At the heart of the modernist impulse was a profound sense of loss—a loss of faith in God and in humanity.
In the increasingly fragmented world, schemes of order and coherence seemed false and fundamentally unreal; the ordered world of traditional literary forms (some of which had existed for over a thousand years) no longer seemed adequate to express this generation’s feelings of disorder, emptiness, doubt, and cynicism. In modernist literature, then, look for the following features:
The widespread use of fragments in the writing and/or ideas of fragmentation and dislocation in the story’s plot.
Omission of explanation, interpretation, summary, and closure.
Arbitrary beginnings, inconclusive endings.
The reader becoming central in helping to create the work’s meaning.
Self-reflexivity, concerned with itself; i.e. the story is concerned with its own creation.
Irony
A search for meaning rather than conveying meaning.
Confusion rather than certainty.
First person narratives.
Resistance to a single, unified interpretation.
“Stream of Consciousness” narratives.
Select one of the assigned poems from this week’s reading; explain how the poem illustrates at least one of the above characteristics of Modernist style.
Use textual quotations throughout your journal to support your ideas.
Journal should be 250 minimum words, use paragraphing, and use MLA format.

I chose the poem, “The Ruined Lady” by Thomas Hardy. It was written in 1866, during the late Victorian time. It drips of irony, one of the features of modernist literature. The poem is written in first person and is a conversation between one-time neighbors in a country village who run into each other in “Town”. The poem mocks Victorian society and its values. In the last line of each stanza, the speaker who moved to Town from the country speaks of being “ruined”. “O didn’t you know I’d been ruined?” said she.” (4). Again in line 16, “We never do work when we’re ruined,” said she.”, the speaker mentions being ruined. The irony is the result of her being “ruined” is she is living a good life without work, with good clothes and jewelry, and a ‘delicate cheek,” (14). Although “ruined”, I did not get the sense that she was unhappy. More like, resigned to her life now and content to live it well. She made the choice to leave the country and come to Town and live a disreputable life. Her choice was a tradeoff for having fine things.
The textbook passage, “Thomas Hardy”, talks about his “occasional playfulness” in his writing. I think it can be seen in the aabb rhyme scheme of “The Ruined Lady”. Although the topic, being “ruined” is or probably should be, a serious one, it is an easy, almost singsong poem with colloquial speech. “And thik oon,’ and theäs oon,’ and t’other’; but now” (10).

Coffee Shop Breakeven Analysis and Recommendations

You are a marketing consultant for a specialty Coffee Shop and Bakery. The business has been operating for about a year and is still not earning a profit. Your role is to determine the breakeven point and make recommendations on changes to each of the 4 P’s: Product, Price, Promotion, and Place. The breakeven point (BEP) is the point at which total cost and total revenue are equal. A breakeven analysis calculates the BEP as:
Breakeven Point = Total Fixed Costs / (Unit Price – Unit Variable Cost) or BEP = F / (P-V)In our example, the BEP = Total Fixed Costs / (Average Order Price – Variable Cost per Order). Using this formula, what is the breakeven point? In other words, how many orders would need to be sold before the business starts making a profit given the current price and cost structure?
Here’s the information you need to do the bistro’s BEP analysis:Current Orders per Month
750
Average Order Price
$11.00
Variable Cost per Order
$5.00
Rent per Month
$2,000.00
Utilities per Month
$400.00
Labor per Month
$3,000.00
Calculate the BEP using the numbers and formulas above. Hint: total fixed costs in this case are the sum of rent, utilities and labor.Recommendations
In order to be profitable, the business will need to either increase revenue or decrease expenses. Make four recommendations on changes to the Product, Price, Promotion and Place that would be likely to increase revenue, decrease expenses, or both. Be creative and have fun with your ideas – Think outside the coffee shop!
Here are some examples of questions you could ask to help with your analysis:
What changes could be made to the product to reduce variable costs?
What changes could be made to prices to increase revenue, and how would you justify those price changes?
Is increasing price the only viable pricing strategy, or could lower prices lead to increased orders beyond the BEP?
What changes could be made to promotions (e.g., advertising, discounts, sales, loyalty programs) to increase the number of orders per month, remembering that promotions are expenses?
What could be done in terms of the Place P without increasing costs significantly? After you calculate BEP, make your recommendations and be sure to explain why you believe your recommended changes could achieve the business objectives of reaching profitability by either increasing revenue or decreasing expenses, and recalculate the BEP based upon your recommendations to ensure that your recommendations result in profitability.
Create a three slide PP presentation with a voice comment (three minutes maximum length) that includes your BEP calculations and four recommendations on changes to the 4 P’s:
Slide 1 – Introduction: include your name, instructor’s name, course, and assignment due date
Slide 2 – Breakeven analysis
Slide 3 – Four recommendations for changes to the 4 P’s
