WA-3: Logos, Ethos, and Pathos.
This assignment is similar to WA-2, but please use different articles. Using the same articles will result in a deduction of 15 points.
Choose your topic and do an Internet search for an article or articles on it. You can also use the List of Interesting Websites. If you can find logos, ethos, and pathos in one article, that’s great, but you can use two or three if you need to. However, all the articles should be on the same topic.
Articles that strictly report facts (such as an encyclopedia entry or unbiased news report) will not work well for this assignment. You need to choose articles expressing a writer’s or writers’ point of view.

Paragraph One: Introduction.
Paragraph Two: What is the article about? Briefly summarize it for me.
In the New York Times article “Why Rural America Voted for Trump,” Robert Leonard paints a deeply sympathetic picture of the daily lives of rural Americans, with their disintegrating roads, distant healthcare, and economically dying, jobless towns. He explains how their feeling forgotten and abandoned by the leaders of our country led to them voting for President Trump (2017).
Paragraph Three: Find a direct quote that is an example of logos and tell me why it is a good example of logos.
Leonard argues “Look at a national map of which counties went for Democrats and which for Republicans: Overwhelmingly, the blue counties are along waterways, where early river transportation encouraged the formation of cities, and surround state capitals. This is also where most investment in infrastructure and services is made” (2017). This is a good example of logos because…
Paragraph Four: Find a direct quote that is an example of ethos and tell me why it is a good example of ethos.
Leonard describes his 2015 encounter with J.C. Watts, a Baptist minister. Mr. Watts describes what he sees as the most important difference between the ethos of Republicans and the ethos of Democrats:
…Republicans believe people are fundamentally bad, while Democrats see people as fundamentally good….We are born bad…children do not need to be taught to behave badly – they are born knowing how to do that. We teach them how to be good….Democrats believe that we are born good, that we create God, not that he created us. If we are our own God, as the Democrats say, then we need to look at something else to blame when things go wrong – not us. (2017)
This quote from Mr. Watts is a good example of ethos because…
Paragraph Five: Find a direct quote that is an example of pathos and tell me why it is a good example of pathos.
Leonard describes the attitude of two 18-year-old men he has known since their childhood: “[They view] liberals as loathsome, misinformed and weak, even dangerous.” “Let’s go to work,” one says to the other as he finishes his coffee. “Let the liberals sleep in” (2017). This quote provides a good example of pathos because…
Paragraph Six: Conclusion
References: Using APA Style, list your article or articles on your References page. Use in-text citations for your quotes.
Expected length: 6-8 paragraphs but meeting the assignment requirements is more important.
Points: Content = 70 pts. Grammar = 20 points. APA Style = 10 pts (100 total).
Of the 70 points for content,
5 points for the introduction, 5 points for the conclusion
15 points for the article summary
15 points for identifying an example of logos and explaining why it is logos (on what kind of factual evidence is it based? Is a subject matter expert quoted? Primary research cited? A direct, real-world analogy presented?)
15 points for identifying an example of ethos t and explaining why it is ethos (Are both sides of the argument considered? Is a concession made? Is the author appealing to a certain moral code or way of life, speaking to a certain audience? Calling for action?)
15 points for identifying an example of pathos and explaining why it is pathos (is the author engaging their own emotions to invoke emotions in the reader? Are they using figurative language to create an image in the reader’s mind? Are they using loaded language?)
Please see the in-class handout for more examples.

Chapter 2 Literature Review
2.1 Introduction about the general
literature review
The literature
review should provide a story made of the resources you used in your thesis.
Research works presented in the literature review should be related to your
work and linked together appropriately. For each paper/research work/resource
you used you have to give a short summary of the work then provide your opinion
on how it is related to your work, this should include any critic you have or
ideas that you adopted in your work. The Harvard style is used for referencing
resources. Example:
Peggy
Johnson defines collection development as “the thoughtful process of developing
a library collection in response to institutional priorities and community or
user needs and interests” (Johnson, 2009, p. 1). According to Johnson (2009, p.
1), collection development forms part of the broader concept of collection
management, which involves “an expanded suite of decisions about weeding,
cancelling serials, storage, and preservation”.

2.12 Research Framework
At
the end of your literature revirew you need to develop a framework which
provides the reader with a visual demonstration of the key factors/variables
being tested in your research and how these factors/variables are linked. If
you are planning to do significance testing you should highlight your
hypotheses at this point, if you have not done so already within the literature
review.
–
You need to make the hypthesis here and justify
them
–
For example A is positively/negatively related to
B.
You
need to support your hypothesis by using theories.
Note:
Making titles and heads
in litreture review depends on the nature of your research. You need to cover
your indepdendent and depdendednt variables deeply with all the branches they
have and how they work in businesses and organizations.
COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY
I have selected “Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning” as my approved technology paper topic.
MBA5141 Technology Paper Guidelines
As noted in the MBA5141 syllabus, each individual student is required to research and submit a Technology Research Paper which is worth 25% of the total course grade. The basic idea of the research paper is to research and examine how particular information technology is utilized in a particular industry. Steps 1 and 2 below outline the procedure to use to select a technology and industry. Step 3 describes what key items to include in the paper.
Step 1 – Select a digital information technology* in which you have an interest. The technology can be a technology that is commonly used today (e.g., biometric sensors, motion detectors, smartphones, etc) or a new “emerging” information technology (e.g., drones, robots, artificial intelligence, etc). “Digital” means that the technology contains some sort of computer-compatible component(s) or function, such as a digital storage part or digital processing chip. ALL SELECTED TOPICS MUST BE PRE-APPROVED BY THE INSTRUCTOR VIA EMAIL !!
Each student in the class must choose a unique technology topic. No duplicate topics are allowed. Topics are assigned on a first-come, first-served, basis according to the posting date in the discussion forum.
Step 2 – Select an industry* in which you have an interest (e.g., automobile manufacturing, retailing, trucking, restaurants, hospitality, public corrections, airlines, education, banking, fitness centers, sports, etc.). Selected industries do not have to be unique topics in the class. Duplicate industry selections are permitted. In writing the paper itself, you may either write from a general industry perspective or from the perspective of an individual company that represents and operates in the selected industry. Note: It is okay to discuss consumer market aspects of the selected technology but the primary focus of the paper should be on business or industry usage, not consumers.
Step 3 – Research and write the paper – The technology paper should be considered a formal research effort. It should be typed, paginated, use footnotes if needed, and contain the following paper components:
Title Page containing paper title, student name, course name, etc.
Table of Contents, using the paper numbers and descriptive section headings contained in the paper.
The Main Body of the Paper contains sections on the following:
Executive Summary – a couple of paragraphs summarizing the paper and its main findings (can use this for the discussion forum summary post);
Technology Summary – a description of the technical components, as well as a brief history, of the selected technology;
Industry Summary – a definition and description of the key characteristics and concerns, as well as a brief history, of the selected industry.
Industry’s Technology Usage – a discussion of how the industry utilizes the technology;
Current Usage, Benefits & Challenges – a discussion of the specific benefits realized by the industry in current usage of the technology, as well as any potential obstacles or challenges;
Future Usage – a concluding discussion of how the current technology usage is expected to evolve in the future (short term or long term) due either to changes in the industry or changes/improvements in the technology.
Bibliography – a detailed list of research references used in the paper.
Technology Paper Grading Rubric: The technology paper will be graded according to the following:
Paper organization & readability (20%)
Technology & industry summary (20%)
Usage benefits, challenges & future (40%)
Level of research effort (15%)
Discussion forum summary post (05%)
Total (100%)
Note 1: The length of the technical paper should be somewhere between 15 to 20 pages (excluding the title page and bibliography). The paper should use a 12 point font and can be either single or double spaced (or both). Be sure to use descriptive section headings to help make the paper more readable.
