Welcome to English 1020! You are thinking, “It has been a long time since I have written a research paper;
there is no way I will do well in this class.” This class will prove you wrong. Even if you experienced
challenges in previous English courses, you do not need to worry. Your writing does not need to fit into a
mold. You will definitely not be writing a cookie cutter, five-paragraph, standard essay in this class. This
process should not be a chore that you just hope to get done with. Rather, this course is about discovery on a
topic you do not know too much about and discovery of yourself and interests. This course is an exploration
rather than a reiteration of mere facts. You are encouraged to ask questions and take chances. Go
somewhere no one else has gone before. Find your own voice and identity through your claims and analysis.
Okay, so I know that your first ultimate fear is that of the blank page. You are saying to yourself that you
cannot think of anything that interests you enough to write about. Well, think about your daily life. Where do
you work? Is there something that you feel could be changed in that workplace? What are your hobbies? If
one of them is music, do you feel that the quality of music is diminishing? Do you have an idol from the past?
Was he or she somehow misunderstood? Ralph Waldo Emerson once stated that “To be great is to be
misunderstood.” What greatness did this person hold that no one else saw? Perhaps you are interested in
science, and perhaps we are getting closer to a cure for common ailments. Perhaps there are controversies
about medicine that you want to explore. There are so many options for you; there is no doubt you can find
something interesting and original—something that gets your fires blazing! Remember, writing is not meant to
be a chore, so find something that is uniquely you and will keep your interest. The more interested you are in
the topic, the more interested your audience will be to read it.
Keep in mind, however, that you cannot just write a paper of opinions that you hold on the topic. That is why
you are asked you in your assignment to list presuppositions and knowledge that you think you already have
on the subject. Everyone comes into situations with presuppositions. It is unavoidable. You need to learn to
cast those aside in order to be more open in your research. You may have to revise your thesis later because
of something new you have found that will change the direction of your paper. Do not get frustrated when your

assumptions have been proven wrong. Instead, see it as a learning experience. You may find many surprises
in your research. Also, do not get anxious, as you will have many opportunities to go back and revise, revise,
and revise. Writing is a process; many first drafts require revision.
Again, emphasizing the mutability of the paper, you will go ahead and write a research proposal as part of the
assignment as well. It does not have to be too formal. Just give the information the exercise asks, such as the
following information: presiding question that the paper will answer, tentative thesis statement, assumptions
you have, etc. We are just at the beginning, and I just need to know where you are. Besides, just having
something already written about your actual research paper will make your transition into the academic paper
more fluid and less strenuous. Again, do not be scared! This is a process!
So anyway, this is week one, and you have a lot of work. But, you will discover more of yourself by examining
your life and what makes you tick. Do not be scared! This should be somewhat enjoyable! Above all, this is a
class of self-discovery and passion. How can you show who you are through this research project? Be
original and powerful! I cannot wait to work with you!

Discuss on Investigation of Grape Variety.Your project scope is to investigate a specific grape variety with the following tasks:
Choose a grape variety from the Vitis International Variety Catalogue In this data base, choose ‘Database Search’ in the left menu. From this point, you can search for a variety/cultivar by name or you can search for an area/country and find out what varieties/cultivars are registered as under production. Or, you can just scroll through long lists of varieties in their database/collections (Full Vivc.de Lists). Also, under the Database search menu, if you follow the tab for important links, you can search regional data bases from all over the world that are more locally specific. An alternate database would be French Illustrated database which will take you to nicely illustrated registrations for France, listed alphabetically.
Describe the variety from a botanical standpoint –
Genus and species
Whether or not it is an inter specific hybrid (non-vinifera in the cross)
General ampelo graphic data – leaf, size, shape, cluster size and shape
Describe the region where this variety originated in its present usage form – Bordeaux or Dijon France, Geneva or Lock port NY, ancient Greece or Mesopotamia, etc. – and describe the probable climate of that region – monthly maximum and minimum, temperatures, monthly rainfall, etc. Be sure your weather data is for a specific site in that region, and includes amounts of rain, amounts of sunshine, not just probable days or rain or cloud. Also, make sure your data is for the whole year, not just the growing season.
Pick a new region where you would like to grow this variety, but be specific – not just California or Australia – but where in California, where in Australia – as they are very large areas and the climate varies a great deal depending on specific location – e.g. Napa versus Lodi, Western Australia versus Barossa, etc. Investigate your new location before making a decision.
Describe this new region using the same parameters as above (3). Make note if you are changing latitude since day length and the general climate category may change. Also make note if you are drastically changing elevation, because altitude could determine diurnal temperature range. And, make note if you are changing north/south hemispheres because the seasons are opposite – e.g. summer in South Africa is January/February, but July/August in Ontario.
Speculate, using the information regarding vine physiology from your course, how the variety will respond to your different climate zone – Hotter/colder? Wetter/drier? Shorter/longer growing season? Shorter/longer days? Will it thrive? Will it taste the same? Will it tolerate the new climate? Will it make the same product? Should you introduce another product instead?
You may have chosen an Old World or a New World variety. You may want to move it from the Old World to the New World, from the northern hemisphere to southern hemisphere, from the Mediterranean to a cool climate, from the Mediterranean to a tropical climate, etc. You should choose a location different from the traditional site of production or origin.
For example:
Perhaps you have chosen an ancient variety from Mesopotamia that has evolved under very high temperatures, very dry climatic conditions, very little seasonal variation in day length, a very long growing season, and an almost frost-free environment. You must decide where you want to grow it, out of its original context and so your questions may be:
How will this variety be affected by moving it to a higher latitude (further north or much further south) which may have a wetter climate, a shorter growing season, a colder winter or more disease pressure?
If the typical wine made from this cultivar in its original home is heavy, dry, high alcohol, red wine, how will it be affected by shorter day length? Cooler, wetter season? More disease pressure? Lower heat units?
With your knowledge of the physiology of the grapes vine and its compensatory mechanisms, how will a wine grower manipulate this variety to try and emulate the traditional wine type or should they create a new end product rather than try to imitate the original?

Your final paper should have the following structure:
1. The essay should be about10-12 pages in total, including photos and reference lists.

335 Applied Personality Project The
Applied Personality Project requires you to critically analyze personality
information found in the popular media in relation to empirical research,
personality theory, and your own life. You will demonstrate that you are an
intelligent consumer of personality research and can think critically about
personality theory, assessment, and research in relation to your daily life.
The
Applied Personality Project consists of four components:
Component
1: Summary and Analysis of Popular
Media Article or Current Event
You
will start by locating a popular media article, video, or current event that is
relevant to personality psychology. Relevant topics may include personality
theory, assessment, use of assessment results, personality disorders, or
personality research. Your article or current event must have been published
(or occurred) within the last six months. For this component of the assignment,
you will use the information found in the popular media. This includes articles or
events distributed via social media, blogs, videos (e.g., Ted Talks),
television shows, newspaper reports, magazines, and similar sources.
For
example, the LA Times published a report of identical triplets separated at
birth in a secret psychology study to understand the relative influence of
nature and nurture in personality development (“The surreal, sad story behind

Component
2: Research Article Application
The
next step is to find an empirical, primary-source journal article that
is directly relevant to your article/event. Empirical, primary-source articles
are original reports of research published in scholarly journals (such as the
Journal of Personality and Social Psychology). You will use the UMGC
library database to find primary-source, empirical research. To
find a relevant article, you will use personality terms, ideas, or theories discussed in your article/event as keywords in your library database search.
It is your responsibility to make sure that the journal article you select is
appropriate. If you are unsure about the relevance of your article, contact
your instructor for approval. Articles must meet the following criteria:
Primary research – Articles should report the results of an original
research study (no meta-analyses, summaries, editorials or theoretical
articles).
Refereed –
Articles must come from peer-reviewed journals found in the UMGC library.
Personality focus – Articles must be relevant to personality psychology.
Recent – Articles
must have been published within the last 10 years.

A brief overview of theory (up to two paragraphs with
appropriate citations)
Discussion of how the theory either supports and
explains your article/event OR how the theory offers an alternate

Personal Relevance
The
last step is to reflect upon the popular article/event, research, and
personality theory in relation to your own life.

research relevant to this article/event?
Does the article/event or research challenge any of
your old opinions? Or does it challenge you to form any new opinions?

personality research, or personality theory?
Your
reflections should be written as a coherent essay (do not format as a list of
answers to these questions). You may include additional insights in your
