Students submission 1:
1. D. “Currently, these writers are re-evaluating western aesthetic, the traditional role of the writer, and the social function of art. Implicit in this re-evaluation is the need to develop a “black aesthetic.” It is the opinion of many Black writers, I among them, that the Western aesthetic has run its course: it is impossible to construct anything meaningful within its decaying structure.” Here, Larry Neal was explaining that writers back then were running out of options to create meaningful content without it being ostracized for their content during the time when they we
A. “The motive behind the Black aesthetic is the destruction of the white thing, the destruction of white ideas, and white ways of looking at the world.” Larry Neal was explaining that the purpose of Black Aesthetic is to raise awarenessof how African Americans Operate on a day today basis. When one say something they automatically assume it’s what a White person do, instead of that being our first thought we should wipe that from our minds and think about the fact that it’s more than just a white human being on this earth.
B. “Ethical, that is, from the viewpoint of the oppressed. And much of the oppression confronting the Third World and Black America is directly traceable to the Euro-American cultural sensibility. This sensibility, antihuman in nature, has, until recently, dominated the psyches of most Black artists and intellectuals. It must be destroyed before the Black creative artists can have a meaningful role in the transformation of society.” in order for the African American Community to succed and be recognized as one, Americans should let go of the interpretation that when you hear African American you don associate it with a third world country such as a country in a deep rural community for example, The rural areas of africa. Rather than
2. D. “Let me be who I feel like being. Uncle Tom. Thomas. Whoever. It’s none of your business (You don’t know anything except what’s there for you to see. An act. Lies. Device. Not the pure heart, the pumping black heart. You don’t ever know that. And I sit here in this buttoned‐up suit to keep myself from cutting all your throats. I mean wantonly.” Clay was explaining to Lula that he was not afriad of nothing and no one and she should gett that out of her head that just because soemone isn’t the same skin color of them they won’t be afriad of what is being said to them they will stand their ground and protect theirself before letting someone damge their nature of being a human being.
F. I’d rather be a fool. Insane. Safe with my words, and no deaths, and clean, hard thoughts, urging me to new conquests. My people’s madness. Hah! That’s a laugh. My people They don’t need me to claim them They got legs and arms of their own. Personal insanities. Mirrors. They don’t need all those words. They don’t need any defense.Although it’s encouraged, it’s not needed. I believe LeRoi Jones, put this to show that although Black people unit as one, it’s okay to see them more as one, equal to others. Anything the opposite race cane do, so can African americans.
A. “when you really believe you can accept them into your fold, as half‐white trusties late of the subject peoples. With no more blues, except the very old ones, and not a watermelon in sight, the great missionary heart will have triumphed, and all of those ex‐coons will be stand‐up Western men, with eyes for clean hard useful lives, sober, pious and sane, and they’ll murder you.” I believe this was a cultural approach but in a sarcastic manner.
3. What was strinking to me is no matter how many times Lula tried to downplay Clay and African americans in general he had a response which either defended or uplifted african americans but mainly his self.
Students submission 2:
1A.) The topic of the foundation of a dark tasteful is displayed in a reflection on the dark stylish in the exposition. As indicated by the text, “The Black craftsman should make new structures and new qualities, sing new melodies (or sanitize old ones); and alongside other Black specialists, he should make another set of experiences, new images, fantasies and legends (and cleanse old ones by fire)” . This actually intends that there should be a reconsidering of being dark, past persecution and torment.
1B.) An imaginative impression of the drive towards Black power is displayed in the statement, “We need a dark sonnet. What’s more, a Black World. Let the world be a Black Poem And let All Black People Speak This Poem Silently or LOUD” . These lines from a sonnet get back to the dark power development through the calls for dark self-assurance and the battle for a dark world.
1D.) “At present, these journalists are reexamining western tasteful, the conventional job of the essayist, and the social capacity of craftsmanship. Verifiable in this re-assessment is the need to create a “dark tasteful.” It is the assessment of many Black authors, I among them, that the Western stylish has run its course: it is difficult to develop anything significant inside its rotting structure.” Here, Larry Neal was making sense of that essayists in those days were reaching an impasse to make significant substance without it being alienated.
2A.) “when you truly accept you can acknowledge them into your overlap, as half‐white trusties late of the subject people groups. Without any blues, aside from the exceptionally old ones, and not a watermelon in sight, the incredible teacher heart will have prevailed, and those ex‐coons will be stand‐up Western men, with eyes for clean hard helpful lives, sober, devout and normal, and they’ll kill you.” I accept this was a social methodology however in a mocking way.
2B.) The motivation for dark power for this situation is likewise evident in Clay’s outrage towards Lula. This comes from the dangers of brutality that Clay raises towards individuals in the train. According to the text, “Without any blues, with the exception of the extremely old ones, and not a watermelon in sight, the incredible teacher heart will have won, and those ex-coons? will be stand-up Western men, with eyes for clean hard valuable lives, clearheaded, devout and normal, and they’ll kill you”. This statement implies that once dark culture is obliterated or if not disposed of in return for white American culture, the two races will be one in the equivalent, and blacks will correct torment and enduring towards whites.
2F.) The topic of dark patriotism and self-assurance is shown when Clay is erupting at Lula in scene two. As indicated by the text, “Don’t you let me know anything! In the event that I’m a working class counterfeit white man . . . leave me alone. Furthermore, let me stand out I need”. This associates with the topic in light of the fact that Lula has been bossing Clay around and deprecating him all through the play, and Clay has concluded that he has had enough of it. He decided to step away and retaliate against the impolite and bigoted conduct put towards him.
3.) These readings were striking to me because of the striking themes that stood out in these readings. It was striking to me that these black themes such as “black aesthetic” and black power were being emphasized in these readings and I loved that about them. I loved that the readings enhanced black culture and black power because of me feeling like black power needs to be emphasized more, and these readings acheived just that. I didnt have questions, the themes just taught me a lot through these readings.
