Essay #1: Life Situation: Single, Age 21, No dependents, College student
Financial Data: Monthly Income $1,750, Living Expenses $1,210, Personal property $7,300, Savings $2,000, Student loan $3,000, Credit card debt $2,400
Shelby Johnson’s current employment position, a grooming specialist for a local pet store, provides her with a lot interesting activities each day. While she is not part of management, she does have the opportunity to use various communication skills, record business transactions, and use current technology tools. Shelby especially enjoys working with the pets and their owners to achieve a pleasing experience.
Her income is based on an hourly wage which can result in financial stress during times of inflation. She has previously used her credit cards to help make ends meet each month. However, the experience she is gaining will be especially valuable when she opens her own pet salon in the future.
Questions:
Given her current situation, identify some positive and negative aspects of her current career.
What suggestions do you think Shelby should consider related to her current and future career activities.
Describe how Shelby might use the following Personal Financial Planner sheets for career planning: Résumé Worksheet and Preparing for an Interview.
Essay #2: At some point in your life you may use the services of a financial planner. However, your personal knowledge should be the foundation for most financial decisions. For each of these situations, determine actions you might recommend:
Situation 1: Fran and Ed Blake, ages 43 and 47, have a daughter who is completing her first year of college and a son three years younger. Currently they have $42,000 in savings and investment funds set aside for their children’s education. With increasing education costs, they are concerned whether this amount is adequate. In recent months, Fran’s mother has required extensive medical attention and personal care assistance. Unable to live alone, she is now a resident of a long-term care facility. The cost of this service is $4,750 a month, with annual increases of about 5 percent. While a major portion of the cost is covered by Social Security and her pension, Fran’s mother is unable to cover the entire cost. In addition, Fran and Ed are concerned about saving for their own retirement. While they have consistently made annual deposits to a retirement fund, current financial demands may force them to access some of that money.
Situation 2: “While I knew it might happen someday, I didn’t expect it right now.” This was the reaction of Patrick Hamilton when his company merged with another organization and moved its offices to another state, resulting in him losing his job. Patrick does have some flexibility in his short-term finances since he has three months of living expenses in a saving account. However, “three months can go by very quickly,” as Patrick noted.
Situation 3: Nina Resendiz, age 23, recently received a $12,000 gift from her aunt. Nina is considering various uses for these unexpected funds including paying off credit card bills from her last vacation or setting aside money for a down payment on a house. Or she might invest the money in a tax-deferred retirement account. Another possibility is using the money for technology certification courses to enhance her earning power. Nina also wants to contribute some of the funds to a homeless shelter and a world hunger organization. She is overwhelmed by the choices and comments to herself, “I want to avoid the temptation of wasting the money on impulse items. I want to make sure I use the money on things with lasting value.”
Questions:
For each situation, identify the main financial planning issues that need to be addressed.
What additional information would you like to have before recommending actions in each situation?
Based on the information provided and your assessment of the situation, what actions would you recommend for the Blakes, Patrick, and Nina?

Historically, composition instruction has addressed two areas. One area is the
use of conventions, following standard conventions in writing and format.
These conventions help streamline our communications. Think about
looking at a text message full of short form text such as “r” — we
have to translate that “r” = “are” and if we’re not clued
into the cultural expectation, we won’t understand. MLA or any
documentation system supports these norms by setting format standards.
Grammatical standards were put in place over time but developed because of the
invention of the printing press where standardized spelling and punctuation
were essential because these
standards make the printed material consistent and, as a result, easier to
understand.
The
second area of composition instruction addresses writing for a purpose: to persuade,
to argue (which is really persuasion that is based on logical argument), to
inform, to define, to classify–all the modes of writing we’ve reviewed this
semester. In addition, this second area of composition also focuses on
evidence–the content that we use to support our purpose.
The
final project assignment asks that you develop an argument that is
evidence-based! Proposals are due at the beginning of this week and will
be returned by the beginning of next week. My response will look at
1) limited focus;
2) quality of
proposal–does it meet the requested task?, and 3) use of evidence.
This
week’s class focuses on evidence.
Topics:
What is evidence in writing and communication (video
presentations like the Ted Talk also use evidence!)

evidence. You’ll need to click through and read all five pages

Quality of evidence – Using credible sources
The
simple answer for finding credible sources is to go to a location where sources
are reviewed before going into the database or onto the library shelf.
Libraries review their sources so any public or school library is usually
a good place to go!
For
online research, consider scholar.google.com.
It provides access to scholarly essays–but needs a bit of understanding for
successful use and navigation.

Discussion 10 – Quality of Evidence.
The Ted Talk featured this week focuses
on how evidence isn’t being used in the scientific community-and discusses
standards and expectations for quality. After watching the Ted Talk,
“Battling Bad Science,” please answer the following questions in a
2-3 paragraph discussion post. 1) What evidence does the
speaker provide to support his point of view? 2) What adds credibility to
his statements? 3) Is the presentation persuasive (effective)?
This will use the standard discussion assessment.

What were some benefits of Jamie’s diabetes in helping him adapt to fitting in at school and giving him complex thinking around prosocial behavior?
This week you will again not see other students post’s until you make your initial post answering the questions to the film!
Review: In Middle and Late Childhood (7-11) children are beginning to construct a more complex self. The “I am fabulous at everything” stage of Early Childhood is over! Competence means you also understand your own incompetence. You KNOW what you are and are not good at. This isn’t negative, it’s healthy! At this age, we FEEL failure for the first time. Children are developing, hopefully, a positive but realistic self-concept. It is a pivotal period for self esteem and learning to live in a broader social world.
Learning to take the perspective of another really “turbo’s them into the social world. Children at this age, in many ways can become more stereotyped. Although they are much better at logic, their thinking is still very concrete, and fitting in becomes important.
Studies on these changes in middle childhood are fascinating:
PROMPT:
Growing up, even our difficulties, can help us develop real gifts. After watching this film, “Fitting In or Standing Out? Conformity in Childhood”, answer the following questions. Include the question number along with your responses:
What were some benefits of Jamie’s diabetes in helping him adapt to fitting in at school and giving him complex thinking around prosocial behavior? (Watch experiments in film- 11:47-17:24 and 33:58-36:00)
What were some benefits Helena had from having a unique childhood, growing up without social interaction. What was a difficulty? What was her victory at the end of the film?
IVO and his brother are identity twins. As they got older not being identical became important to them. IVO became less rigid in gender identity than his identical brother. Give one example of how IVO was more comfortable around gender identity. (41:00-48:00)
Give an example of how Het had a healthy capacity for leadership. How did her father help model this? How did Het’s father help her adapt in not losing her self-efficacy when she became jealous of her new baby sibling? (one scene-34:00-39:00)
Paris grew up with a mother who was a famous artist and had a disability. What are some ways this impacted Paris to both become a person comfortable with himself , and to want to be a person who fit in?
If you want to add a “takeaway” from this week’s material on middle childhood, or from your own development at this age, please share? : )

The…
• implications of the social construction of victimization

• wider impacts of victimization, including the family members of the victim and the offender, and society at large
• needs of different people affected by victimization using Taylor’s disaster classifications from the Lesson 5 content (direct, indirect,
secondary and tertiary victims)
Please be sure to use the aforementioned key points as headings for your assignment
