How can Energy Star help both businesses and individuals to be more sustainable?

Part One: Energy
What is Energy Star?
How can Energy Star help both businesses and individuals to be more sustainable?
What is a “phantom load” or “vampire electricity?”
How many examples can you identify and list from your own home?
What solutions can you think of to rid your home of this phenomenon?
Where is the closest nuclear power plant to where you live?
What are your thoughts on the use of nuclear energy – do you support nuclear energy as an energy source? Why or why not?
What are the pros and cons of nuclear energy?
Part Two: Calculate your Carbon Footprint
For this part of the lab, you will calculate your personal “carbon footprint.”
Go to one of the many carbon footprint calculator Websites, such as
http://www.carbonfootprint.com/calculator.aspx
http://www.nature.org/greenliving/carboncalculator/
https://www3.epa.gov/carbon-footprint-calculator/
What does the term Carbon Footprint mean?
What specifically does a carbon footprint measure?
What information do you need to have on hand in order to calculate your carbon footprint using one of these on-line calculators?
What site did you visit first?
What was your carbon footprint?
Now go to a different carbon footprint calculator website and re-calculate your carbon footprint. List the website that you used.
What was the result of your 2nd carbon footprint calculation?
Is the result from this 2nd calculation similar or different to the first calculation?
Why might the results turn out differently?
These simple carbon footprint calculators measure some of the direct impacts that our everyday activities have on carbon release into the atmosphere, but don’t begin to take into account all of the more indirect actions, circumstances, or materials usage in our lives that also contribute CO2 to the atmosphere. Provide an example of something in your life that would cause a release of CO2 into the atmosphere but was not taken into consideration in the carbon footprint calculator that you used.
Make a list of 10 things that you, personally, could do to lower your carbon footprint.
Why or how would these 10 things lower your carbon footprint?
How easy do you think it would be to actually incorporate the 10 changes listed above into your life?
How much would it alter your lifestyle?
Would you actually be willing to make any of these changes?

Do you agree with the authors’ assertion that participation is the most fundamental of the basic distinctions of art? Why?

Standard Essay Format: The faculty will be evaluating your work to see that you have used the proper format. This includes standard essay format: introduction/body/conclusion. You will find additional information and sample writing assignments on the Student Portal, including helpful videos that will walk you through the steps for creating a proper essay.

• Understanding the Course Content: The faculty will be evaluating your work to see that you demonstrate an understanding of course content and that you are covering key concepts discussed in the textbook. While you may certainly provide additional information from outside sources, you must use the course textbook as your primary source of information.

• A Clear and Well-Developed Response: The faculty will be evaluating you on your ability to present a well-organized and developed response that is clear in its presentation of the course material.

• The Ability to Understand the Course Content: The faculty will be evaluating you on your ability to examine, assess, evaluate, and/or analyze course content and key concepts. You will need to demonstrate you can look at the course material in various ways and present your review in your writing assignment.

• Good Presentation: The faculty will be evaluating your work to ensure you have the proper use of grammar, spelling, punctuation, citation style, etc.

To help you earn the maximum number of points (25 points) for your writing assignments, we have developed some strategies for you to use:

• Be sure to organize your writing assignment to meet the standard essay format. Students will often have the answer, but their work is poorly formatted. This is one of the most common critiques made by faculty members students do not present their work in a standard essay format. The maximum points are given for work that is clearly developed with effective transitions from point to point.

• Read the question/prompt carefully and be sure you are covering key concepts outlined in the textbook. Students will sometimes find information only through an Internet source or personal/ professional experience, discuss that information, and not cover key concepts outlined in the textbook. Be sure you understand what the question/prompt is asking for and discuss the textbook material first. After that, you may feel free to add additional information as it provides support or contrast to the textbook material. The maximum points are given for work that demonstrates an in-depth understanding of the ideas in the assigned readings.

• Be sure to present your work in a clear and organized fashion that is easy to follow. The maximum points are given for well organized writing submissions that respond to the assignment clearly and directly.

•Depending on the question/prompt, you need to demonstrate your ability to evaluate, assess, and analyze the concepts related to the question/prompt. With this, you are showing the faculty you have a solid understanding of the material and are capable of looking at it from different perspectives. The maximum points are awarded for writing assignments that demonstrate both a solid understanding of the material and make connections between varying points.

•Your writing assignment should use proper grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, and provide references/citations. The maximum points are awarded for writing submissions that include all of these features. Proofreading your work before submitting it to the university will help ensure that all of these expectations have been met.

References/Citations:
• Students must use APA style citations in their writing assignments. The majority of your response should be your own original writing based on what you have learned from the textbook. Be sure to provide a citation and a reference for any materials used, including the required textbook. The following points are designed to help you understand how to provide proper citations and references for your work:
Sources are listed in two places.
The first, a citation, is briefly listed within your answer. This includes identifying information that directs the reader to your list of references at the end of your writing assignment.
The second, a reference, is at the end of your work in the list of references section.
All sources cited should follow APA style and provide enough identifying information so that the reader can access the original material.
Textbook for the order:
The Humanities Through the Arts: (Chapter 1-4)
Lee A. Jacobus & F. David Martin, 2018
McGraw-Hill Education
ISBN.13: 978-1-260-15418-4

Please choose a question from the list below:
Using your experience in perceiving either Blume’s “The Eternal City” (Figure1-3) or David Alfaro Siqueiros’s “Echo of a Scream” (Figure 1-2), discuss how education and experience changed your perception of the art. Were your values identified at all? If so, how?
Do you agree with the authors’ assertion that participation is the most fundamental of the basic distinctions of art? Why? If you disagree, which do you think is the most important and why? Do you have any experiences with art to draw on to support your claims?
Select one of the following paintings and describe its organization in terms of the principles of composition including balance, gradation, movement and rhythm, proportion, unity, and variety: Fragonard, The Swing, 1776 (Figure 4-13) Monet, Impression, Sunrise, 1873 (Figure 4-15) O’Keeffe’s Rust Red Hills, 1930 (Figure 4-12)

Discussion Question
Healthcare policies impact all populations. Now, with the use of social media, policies involvement and awareness are rising.
Take a moment to review the Twitter feed for compelling Tweets that are related to healthcare policy and are directly impacting your community or those you care for.
Give an overview of a policy or potential policy. Include how it could impact your community or those you care for positively negatively.
Next, discuss the importance that interdisciplinary collaboration would have related to the policy.
Then, identify any ethical concerns it raises for you and why.
Compose a 280-character or fewer Tweet that describes what you have shared with the class. Remember Twitter only allows 280 characters (this include spaces, etc.) so you will need to be concise. It should include a hashtag. Include a reference URL if applicable. Share this Tweet in the discussion. (Note: A Twitter account is not required).
Your discussion post should look like:
Paragraph one: overview of the policy or potential policy. Include how it could impact your community or those you care for positively negatively.
Paragraph two: Discuss the importance that interdisciplinary collaboration would have related to the policy.
Paragraph three: Identify any ethical concerns it raises for you and why
Paragraph four: Compose a Tweet that describes what you have shared with the class.
Resources: Where did you find your data?

HUM 200 Project Part One Rough Draft Guidelines and Rubric
Overview: Now that you have chosen your artifacts and identified the common theme, you will develop a draft of your exploration document. Over the course of Theme: Examining the Humanities and Theme: Impact of the Humanities, you will walk through each step in the Soomo webtext and have an opportunity to incorporate instructor feedback before submitting your final version of the exploration document at the end of Theme: Impact of the Humanities.
Prompt: Analyze your two chosen artifacts. Then, identify a common theme and compare your examples to one another as expressions of the same theme in different cultural artifacts. To document your analysis and research, you will develop a reference list. In preparation for the presentation you will develop in Theme: Human Culture, you will also consider how you would present your research to a specific audience.
Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:
I. Describe the cultural artifacts that you chose. Consider questions such as these in your response: What is the name or title of the artifact? Who is the author or artist? What is the date or time period when the artifact was created? What is the cultural location or physical setting of the artifact? In addition, you could consider including a photograph or image of each cultural artifact, if they are visual artifacts.
II. Identify at least one common theme that will serve as the framework of your exploration document. How is the theme expressed in your artifacts?
III. Explain how the theme you identified is related to your personal experience. For instance, you could discuss how the expression of the theme in your
cultural artifacts is connected to you personally.
IV. Discuss a profession that could be impacted by the theme you identified. In other words, how is the theme you identified related to professional experiences? How could a working knowledge of the humanities be useful in this field?
V. Describe at least three humanities resources that you could use to investigate your theme and artifacts. Your sources must be relevant to your theme and of an appropriate academic nature. In your description, consider questions such as the following: What are the similarities and differences in the content of your sources? What makes them appropriate and relevant for investigating your issue? What was your thought process when you were searching for sources? How did you make choices? Did you encounter any obstacles and, if so, how did you overcome them? If you did not, why do you think it was so easy to find what you needed?
VI. Use the humanities resources that you selected to research your theme and cultural artifacts, making sure that you cite your sources. Based on your research, do the following:
A. Discuss the relationship between each cultural artifact and its historical context. In other words, what were the circumstances under which each artifact was created?
B. Explain the similarities and differences that you observe in the cultural artifacts you selected, in relation to the theme. For instance, do the artifacts contain any symbolism? If so, how are the symbols both similar and different? What do the symbols tell you about each artifact?

C. Discuss the medium—such as literature, music, or sculpture—through which your cultural artifacts were created. For instance, how did the creator or creators of each artifact use the medium to convey something about the meaning of the artifact?
VII. Based on your research, develop a thesis statement that conveys the claim you plan to make about your theme and artifacts. Your thesis statement should be clear, specific, and arguable.
VIII. Based on your research, identify an audience that would be interested in your theme and thesis statement. For example, who would benefit most from hearing your message?
IX. Describe how and why you can tailor your message to your audience, providing specific examples based on your research. For example, will your audience understand the terminology and principles used by humanities scholars, or will you need to explain these? How will you communicate effectively with your audience?
X. Provide a reference list that includes all of the humanities resources you used to research your artifacts, theme, and thesis statement. Ensure that your list is formatted according to current APA guidelines (or another format with instructor permission).
