Describe the difference between referential and table-level integrity and provide examples of related constraints in the proposed schema and how each impacts data integrity.
Instructions
This week, you learned about why databases need to be designed to support data integrity and the role of normalization in ensuring data anomalies are addressed. In this assignment, you will write a paper that demonstrates your understanding of important database design principles and you will revise your entity-relationship diagram to ensure the database schema is normalized to the third normal form and supports data integrity.
Be sure to include the following items in your paper:
Describe the difference between referential and table-level integrity and provide examples of related constraints in the proposed schema and how each impacts data integrity.
Explain the process and purpose of normalization and denormalization provide a synthesis of E.F. Codd’s theory of normalization.
Describe the difference between first, second, and third normal forms and how each limits specific anomalies from being introduced into the schema.
Explain the meaning of the acronym ACID (atomicity, consistency, isolation, and durability) as it relates to database integrity and validity.
Review and revise your entity-relationship diagram (ERD) from Week 2 and embed the revised ERD in your paper. Describe what changes were made to ensure the diagram is at 3rd normal form.
Justify your database design by providing a detailed descriiption for each table that demonstrates that it is in third normal form (3NF) by showing that constraints have been tested.
Describe the implications for data integrity in not making necessary changes to the entity-relationship diagram to bring it to 3NF.
Length: 5 to 7-page paper, including 1 entity-relationship diagram
References: Include a minimum of 3 scholarly resources.
The completed assignment should address all of the assignment requirements, exhibit evidence of concept knowledge, and demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the content presented in the course.
