The Roman World

The documentary runs roughly an hour and you only have to watch Part 1 that is linked above. Answer the following questions as you watch the film, aiming for 2-3 sentences per questions.
The Roman Empire had people from various locations that came to Rome. What were some of those locations?
Why was immigration important to Rome’s population?
What role did olive oil play in food production? Where did it come from?
How was Rome a consumer city?
Describe how bread was provided and made for the average citizen for Rome.
What did Romans put on their tombstones?
How was multiculturalism practiced in Rome?
How does Mary Beard characterize combat in the Colosseum?
What role did foreigners ultimately play in the Roman Empire?
Part 2: Video Analysis – One paragraph
Of the above information pieces, which did you find most interesting about life in the Roman Empire? In a paragraph-length response (5-7 sentences), expound on why you choose that aspect of Roman life, and why you think it is significant.

Sex, Gender, and Sexuality

Utilizing the research skills you have been developing since Topic 1, along with the feedback from your instructors on sources and formatting, write a paper of 750 –1,200 words discussing different aspects of society and culture as they relate to gender, sexuality, social stigmas, and overall health.
Use three to four scholarly resources to support your explanations. The textbook may count as one of your sources. Ensure that your sources are scholarly sources from the library (that means avoid resources from: .coms such as VeryWell, Wikipedia, and encyclopedias).
Consider the following in your paper:
Explain how psychology can be used to help understand sex and gender from a biological perspective
Describe how social norms within a culture can create stigmas toward sex and gender
Explain how religion, spiritual beliefs, or a Christian worldview plays a role in societal stigmas regarding sex, gender, sexuality, and health
Explain the concept of social stigmas and the impact social stigmas have on mental health

How would the author defend their argument(s) against your critique in Part II? Put yourself in their shoes and try to think how they would argue to save their position. You should push the debate beyond class lectures and readings — i.e. in this part don’t merely explain material that we have already covered.

Term Paper: The paper is to be a critical examination of an argument presented in one of the required readings. The paper must be typed, double spaced, in 10 or 12 point type with normal margins. The paper should be at least 8 pages and no more than 15 pages long. State the position that you are defending clearly, preferably early in the paper and be sure to consider probable objections to the arguments you give. Each paper should contain Parts I–IV.

Part I. Choose one of the required readings and clearly present (explicate) the author’s position and arguments (if the author gives a number of arguments then pick one or two that you consider to be the most central). Be sure to explain what conclusion(s) they argue for and what evidence or support they give for their conclusion(s). Note: this is the most important part of the paper because it lays the groundwork for the rest of the assignment.

Part II. Give, in your view, the most damaging criticism of the argument or position explicated in Part I. Be sure to develop your criticism in some detail. Where exactly does the author go wrong? What empirical claims (matter of fact claims) do they make that are false, if any? Do not use the shotgun method — don’t briefly mention five or six problems, develop one or two in detail.

Part III. How would the author defend their argument(s) against your critique in Part II? Put yourself in their shoes and try to think how they would argue to save their position. You should push the debate beyond class lectures and readings — i.e. in this part don’t merely explain material that we have already covered.

Part IV. Present and defend your views on the subject that you have chosen to write about. Do you agree with the author? If so, why? If not, why not? Whatever your views be sure that you give reasons or arguments in support of them — remember opinions are only a starting point.

This assignment is intended to be primarily an independent piece of scholarship; some additional readings will probably be necessary, but comprehensive knowledge of the literature is neither expected nor desired. The point is to struggle through the issue you choose in a philosophically sophisticated way, making sense of the issues involved and the arguments that surround them, and defending a position which you find tenable on the basis of those arguments.

Please see syllabus for due date.

Plagiarism: If you consult sources and borrow direct quotes, paraphrased arguments, or ideas you must footnote or endnote your sources with complete bibliographic information.

Part IV: The part that separates the high honor grade papers from the B-level papers. The student gives, analyzes, defends, critique, and responds to the critique . . . their own argument related to the topic or issue being discussed? This requires the student to go beyond what was covered in class material and to do some independent thinking and scholarship. Might consider issues of DEI etc.

Cases

J.R. is a nurse practitioner who serves an
urban Chinese community. The challenges she faces daily include coordinating
health care for the community members, fostering compliance with treatment
regimens, and teaching the community about health prevention and early
detection of diseases and conditions.
J.R. has learned that one of the main
reasons the community members do not adhere to their treatment regimens is
because of mistrust of Western medicine. Many of the patients are older
adults who rely on homeopathic treatments they learned in China as children.
These patients prefer to take Chinese herbs in lieu of prescription
medications. Additionally, these patients do not like to attend health
screenings or take part in immunization clinics because they do not believe
these measures are beneficial to their health.

L.W. is a nurse practitioner in an urban
community. Many of her clients recently immigrated to the United States from
various countries. She is challenged by the many different cultures she
encounters and the different values and beliefs they hold toward Western
medicine.
She is determined to earn her clients’
trust. She does this by providing health care services that are respectful of
each client’s health beliefs and practices and cultural needs. She knows she
must set aside her own values and beliefs to focus on what is important to
her clients in order for them to have successful outcomes.

D.H. is a nurse administrator at a large
primary practice. His duties include maintaining the nurses’ schedules to
keep within the facility’s budget; overseeing the hiring and training of
nurses; ensuring that the work environment for the nurses is safe; and
resolving any employment issues with the nurses that require disciplinary
action, termination, or reporting adverse nursing care to the state board.
One of his primary initiatives during the
nurses’ orientation is to reiterate the importance of incorporating the goals
of Healthy People 2020 into the nurses’ care.

Questions for the case

What type of prevention J.R. is trying to
achieve when she encourages her patient population to attend the blood
pressure screening events?
Please elaborate your answer; compare prevention types, give
examples and share similar challenges you might have faced during your
practice.

Give at least two examples of emerging
populations in the United States and describe their cultural characteristics
that might interfere with their healthcare.

How you as a health care professional should
proceed if you suspect that a client has finances concerns about being able
to afford their health care.
