Journal of Learning and Problem Solving

This assignment runs over the extent of this course and is to be done individually. In
this essay, you describe and analyze (reflect on) one or more concrete situations in
your life where you faced a problem (and, in coping with it, you were learning
something turned out to be challenging) much as in the readings provided
(skim/read the examples provided). The key point is to describe the problem
situation through the eyes of the person in the problem, not through the eyes of a
person who already realized (has been shown) what the problem was. Your
story(ies) are to show what a person is doing when they do not yet know what they
do once able to look back and knowing the outcomes of their actions.
You should endeavor to begin your writing early, because then you will be able
to get feedback if submitted no later than 14 days prior to submission date

Thematic Unit Integrating Science, Technology, and Math (STEM)

Lesson Plans should only be SCIENCE but includes Math. Developmentally age appropriate for each age group.

Rationale: National focus has been placed on STEM. Early Childhood educators have always known that the brain learns best when concepts are integrated.
Description: Based on students’ needs and interests, create an interdisciplinary science, technology, and mathematics unit for one age group (infants, toddlers or preschoolers).
Directions: Plan and teach an integrated STEM unit.
1. Design 10 developmentally appropriate STEM lesson plans for preschoolers (36-60 mo). Include realistic and problem-solving activities that promote creative and higher order thinking skills (NAEYC 4). Be sure that each lesson plan:
a) Aligns instruction with state-adopted standards at the appropriate level of rigor (FEAP 1a);
b) Sequences lessons and concepts to ensure coherence and required prior knowledge (FEAP 1b);
c) Designs instruction for student to achieve mastery (FEAP 1c);
d) Selects appropriate formative assessments to monitor learning that match learning objectives (FEAP 1d, 4b);
e) Uses a variety of data, independently, and in collaboration with colleagues and your cooperating teacher, to evaluate learning outcomes, adjust planning and continuously improve the effectiveness of the lessons (FEAP 1e);
f) Develops learning experiences that require students to demonstrate a variety of applicable skills and competencies (FEAP 1f);
2. Include standards-based instruction, differentiated instructional experiences for all children and create supportive, accepting and a student centered classroom environment.
3. Incorporate books, technology, manipulatives, and science equipment.
4. Using Bloom’s taxonomy, develop and list open-ended questions and discussion topics.
5. Indicate how you would encourage children to communicate their STEM understanding verbally, in writing (pictures, graphs), and through the use of technology in order to assess mastery of lesson objectives.
6. Teach one lesson from the unit (FEAP 3). A faculty member will observe you while you are teaching and provide feedback (NAEYC 4).
7. Reflection: Write a reflection on this experience; include the feedback given by your instructor. You will also explain how you did/did not do the following:
a) How these plans were created and selected.
b) Organize, allocate, and manage the resources of time, space and attention (FEAP 2a);

A firm recently spent $100 on Google AdWords and generated 100 extra visits to the firm’s web site, 5 of which resulted in a purchase. To pay for the change, they dropped the banner advertising on ESPN.com, saving $1000, but which also reduced the number of visits to their web site by 500, and 20 fewer sales. Sales from visitors from ESPN.com were, on average, 25% higher than sales from visitors from Google AdWords. Evaluate the decision to shift advertising money from ESPN.com to Google AdWords.

Application of Concepts from Caring Science

Points: 300 | Due Date: Week 4, Day 7 | CLO: 3, 4 | Grade Category: Assignments
Assignment Prompt
Summary: A theory can be used to guide practice. This assignment is an exercise in supporting a clinical practice with theory and evidence.
Directions: Identify an outcome of nursing practice in your area of practice that can be improved. For example, if you work in home health, you may identify that throw rug use by fall risk patients is too prevalent. You may be able to use the problem that inspired the theory concepts that you developed in week two. Identify the concept in Watson’s Theory of Caring that could represent or include the outcome. In our example, the outcome would be the changes in self through the change in the patient’s floor covering practice. Identify a practice that can be changed or implemented that may influence the outcome. Identify the concept in Watson’s Theory of Caring that includes the practice. In our example, the practice could be to improve the understanding of fall hazards through the engagement in a teaching-learning experience, one of Watson’s Caritas Processes. Identify exactly how these two concepts will be measured with their operational definitions. Develop a proposition between the two. Present your outcome in an APA formatted paper meeting the University’s standards for a written assignment.
Expectations
Due: Monday, 11:59 pm PT
Length: 5 to 7 pages including title and reference pages
References: 3 to 10. There should be enough to support the links between the concepts of the problem and the concepts of Watson’s Theory of Caring.
See USU NUR Research Paper Rubric for additional details and point weighting.

In the Introduction briefly identify the article and author(s) and briefly summarize their topic and thesis.

In the Introduction briefly identify the article and author(s) and briefly summarize their topic and thesis.
In the Analysis of the Article section: You must cover all of these questions.
 What is their topic, issue, and major & minor claims.
o Are they claims of fact, policy or value? Elaborate
o Are the relevant, recent, reliable, and accurate? Elaborate
o How do they support their main claims?
 What is the problem they are addressing? Are the researchers addressing a misinterpretation, a gap, or a
modification that needs to be made in how others have addressed the topic or issue?
 Who are identified as important/touchstone thinkers on your issue and why?
 How do the authors build on and extend what others have argued?
 Do they make any concessions or acknowledge counter-arguments?
Then for the Research Relevance section analyze in terms of relevance to YOUR research. Some examples of
things you might cover are:
 What content can be used for your research paper?
 What are the areas of agreement and disagreement (from what you know) that may cause tension?
 What was profound or new in the article?
 What were the strengths in content?
 What keywords (theories, concepts) from the article can you use as the basis of section headings?
Describe in narrative fashion, not as a list.
Then conclude with a brief summary of your analysis of the articles overall effectiveness and relevance to your
research based on the above consideration
Follow all APA guidelines for title page, running heading, page numbers, margins, spacing, citations, and
reference page. One primary peer reviewed source must be used to create four APA in-text citations (direct
quotes or paraphrasing). Level 1 and level 2 headings are also required. Use the headings to help “answer” the
major prompts above. Turnitin enabled. Plagiarism (generally a score about 10%) will result in a zero on this
