For this paper you will reflect on your own cultural beliefs, values and customs and discuss their influence on the shaping of you as a person and how they relate to your future human service work. This is an assignment that requires honesty and exploration of who you are so that you are better able to help those who seek your services.
Instructions:

• This paper will be at least 4 full pages, double spaced with size 12 Times New Roman font and 1 inch margins on all sides. You must use at least 3 scholarly sources. You will need a title page with running head, body (at least 4 full pages), and reference section all in APA style. Please use complete sentences, appropriate grammar, spelling, and references. You will also be required to use in-text references in your work in accordance with APA style to avoid plagiarism. Information to help with your writing is provided under the APA resources section of the course information tab. Papers not submitted on time will have 5 points deducted per day late. Each paper must be submitted via Blackboard (SafeAssign link in unit) and emailed copies will not be accepted. Please use a Microsoft Word format to submit papers (no PDFs or other programs please).

• For this essay, you are asked to share your thoughts, opinions, and/or perspective on the topics we are studying. In your work, please use third person (e.g. this author, this writer, etc.) for all essays as well as other assignments in the MSHSV program. The department recommends this for all students as we encourage all contributions made in the course to have a strong connection with current research. We have found that the use of third person pronouns encourages this connection. Students are more than welcome to share person opinion as appropriate as outlined in an assignment as long as the contribution is supported by empirical concepts or resources.
• Please be sure to avoid using internet sources such as Wikipedia or other web- based resources that do not have strong academic backing. You must use at least 3 scholarly sources. Plagiarism detection software will be used to scan each paper and any paper that is determined to have academic integrity issues will earn a score of 0 automatically.

Instructions
Your mission is to create an imaginary virtual periodical (such as a newspaper or magazine) from a time between roughly 1400 and 1800. You can write imaginative stories that mix fact and fiction (but be within the realm of possibility). You can make this as a simple website on Google Sites (preferred), or with PowerPoint, or even as a Word document.

Requirements:
750 to 1000 words in length with at least five stories (one should be 250 words)
Focus your periodical around one of the major topics, themes, or movements from the course (such as women in early modern times, the Renaissance, the Aztec Conquest, exploration, Religious Reform, printing, Jews, witch trials, French Revolution, Enlightenment, etc)
Mix fact and fiction (you could imagine the life of a villager, townsperson, or imagine a reporter interviewing someone–all kinds of possibilities)
ALL members of the class must check with the instructor about the topic and possible readings
Include at least one image which is referenced in a story
For further research on your project use only resources you can obtain through Bobst Library, or from the list on Brightspace—all sources must be approved by your instructor!
Finally, write a paragraph reflecting on why you chose your topic and the particular stories
Recommendations
Choose a specific year (or even day) and location for your ‘periodical’ that you believe reflects an important moment in time. You can include events from around 50 years on either side of the date but the closer the better.
Try to include different aspects of the topic (such as how different social groups were affected by an event) but be sure to have a point of view
Give your stories some depth (explain people’s perspectives, motivations, and context)
Try to avoid focusing on the major figures covered in this course (so if you do exploration steer away from Zheng He, Columbus, and Da Gama)
Please do not use popular websites like History.com, Wikipedia, Thought & Co, etc, as the information is unreliable and not vetted by experts in the field.
Have fun and be creative while keeping your stories plausible. Avoid writing like an encyclopedia! Rather think of stories that reveal larger themes.

Book: On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous
Prompt: How does the author present his writing? First, what is the purpose of his writing? How does it relate to preserving Vietnamese refuge lives, or the memories of their experiences? Why might documentation be important for people who are less visible—refugees, former colonial subjects living in the diaspora, or the LGBTQ population? Second, what are the challenges in documenting their lives, challenges such as the limits of language? Use 3 core concepts from deconstructive criticism to explain the limits of language (hence, documentation). Choose ~4 quotes/passages from the novel that will help you develop your interpretation (thesis). In the chapter “Rice Paddies & Math Tests,” Gladwell discusses the way that a cultural legacy like rice farming can lead to an attitude about work and persistence that can be profitable in later contexts (like math classes). And in “Marita’s Bargain” (which you’re reading next week), Gladwell shows how a different cultural legacy—the tradition of summer break from school — can have negative effects on learning, effects that have an immense impact on future individual success.
