Is economic inequality inevitable?

For this paper, you will have to analyze an economic debate, process, or institution through a sociological perspective. Your project should address one and only one of the following prompts and use a case as evidence for your argument:

1. Is economic inequality inevitable?

2. How can organizations reduce the role of class, gender, and/or race in reproducing internal inequalities?

3. Are markets necessarily and inevitably problematic?

4. How can social networks strengthen economic disadvantage?

5. Is meritocracy impossible?

To address these prompts, you will have to combine sociological arguments from the videos, readings, and assignments with an original empirical case of your choice. A case refers to an identifiable event or process that is documented and that you can analyze as a relevant example associated to your argument. The current economic/heath crisis would be an example of ‘a case’; an organization or institution would also be an example of ‘a case’; personal experiences, as documented through interviews, would also be an example of ‘a case’; a heated discussion on Reddit is also a ‘case’.

In your project, you should really endeavor to use the sociological concepts and discussions from the course’s reading list. You can write, for example, on the reproduction of social capital, the importance of institutions, the role of networks, the operation of culture, et cetera, when building your argument. Indeed, you are expected to use the relevant readings from the course to address the prompt you chose. You are welcome to use external readings too, but you should be able to tackle this project just with the readings in our reading list.

You are also expected to give us readers some information about the case that you selected and why you selected it. As part of the text, you will have to introduce briefly what the case is about and why it matters for your argument.

Along with the main text of your project, you are expected to include a list of references. Please, separate the references that refer to theories and sociological texts from those that refer to your selected case. This last group are “primary sources”, and may include news articles, online materials, reddit threads, etc. Divide your references into “primary sources” (which refers to the sources for the case) and “bibliography” (which refers to the readings that you used to build your argument).

Ethical Formative and Summative Evaluation Plans

As noted in the course overview, you will not only address obtaining a grant, but maintaining one as well. Funding sources are very particular about how you monitor ongoing progress towards proposed outcomes. Part of the grant application and periodic reporting will be your evaluation plan. There are usually two types of evaluation: formative (or ongoing) and summative (or outcome-based). You will need to use the readings and resources provided in this course to make decisions about how you will show you are making progress. This step is similar to your practice evaluations of client progress. You have several choices ranging from quantitative measures such as surveys, arrest rates, hospitalization rates, and frequency of use, to more qualitative measures such as exit interviews, focus groups, or listening groups. Triangulation of data sources helps to ensure validity of results. Using three or more data sources (often mixing qualitative and quantitative measures) can be effective.
In a 5 page paper, discuss your understanding of qualitative methods and quantitative methods. Then, discuss your understanding of formative and summative evaluations. Choose a combination of qualitative and quantitative measures for a formative (on-going) then a summative (final outcome) evaluation of each of your eight outcomes. For example, if you had an outcome that stated that 30-day use of alcohol among adolescents would be reduced by 50 percent, you could use an annual underage drinking survey to plot if a percentage of teens are consuming less alcohol in a 30-day period. This is considered a quantitative method. You could also gather a listening group of 10–12 adolescents who would be open, honest, and knowledgeable, and ask their perception of alcohol consumption among teens. This is considered a qualitative method. You may choose to use the listening sessions as formative evaluation and pre-and post-survey for summative evaluation. You need to rely on scholarly sources to defend your choices for all items listed above.

My grant application was for mental health school based clinic for marginalized communities. The program provides mental health counseling, afterschool academic support, and housing and employment assistance. Because mental health is heavily stigmatized in marginalized communities it is important to engage the community through assemblies, community events and fundraisers.

Ethical Issues, Criminological Theories, and Public Policy

Review the following scenario:
A recent policy was implemented by Anytown’s Department of Job and Family Services regarding the issue of child endangerment. Any household that has one or more documented offense of domestic violence, child abuse, or drug or alcohol related offenses committed by the mother, father, guardian, and/or caregiver, will result in the removal of any child or children from the home.
The child will be placed in the care of the state, or foster care services, until documentation can prove that the offender has undergone any or all of the following, and has thus been “offense free” for a period of no less than 6 months: Alcohol and/or drug treatment, counseling, family therapy sessions, mental health treatment, anger management, life skills classes, and/or parenting classes.
The Department of Job and Family Services made reference to the social learning theory as providing support for this approach, as evidenced by research indicating that “aggressive children have parents who use aggressive tactics when dealing with others. For example, the children of wife batterers are more likely to use aggressive tactics themselves than children in the general population, especially if the victims (their mothers) suffer psychological distress from the abuse” (Siegel, 2019, p. 148).
In a minimum of 4 double-spaced pages (excluding the cover and references pages), write a critical essay voicing your opinion about the following issues:
Identify potential ethical/moral issues that could arise from implementing this new policy. Based on the conclusions you reach after taking all of this into account, share your opinion on whether the policy is considered an ethical one, based on its potential ramifications.
Consider the impact (be it positive or negative) on those involved in the above situation, specifically as it pertains to the overall welfare and well-being of the child. Describe the positive and/or negative impact the policy could have on society in general, or on the family unit. Be as objective as possible in examining the potential benefits of such a policy, as well as the possible negative effects.
Finally, did the Department of Job and Family Services misinterpret or misapply the social learning theory when planning and implementing the policy? Be sure to demonstrate how the social learning theory either does or does not apply to this scenario.

Case study of Leisure and Gender

This paper involves reading, understanding, and reflecting upon a case related to an aspect of leisure study/practice. Once you have selected one case study and read it thoroughly, you must respond to three reflection questions, using the literature to support your answers. Read the case and answer the following question:
1. How will you address the issue of women (especially those second shifters) who are unable
to participate due to childcare issues? Outline two programs/initiatives that might help
support working mothers.
2. Consider what your responsibility is when it comes to educating your participants about
equitable treatment for all participants. How will you create a space that is safe and inclusive
for everyone? Outline two specific strategies that you could use to help create a safe and
welcoming space for all genders.
3. Outline a plan to distribute the funding received to address the issues brought to light after
conducting the survey. Outline two specific strategies/programs that you could implement
to help mitigate these challenges through your role at Sunnyside Courts.
