1) Who is Apelles? When did he live, where is he from, and what did he do? What are the main ancient sources that give us information on his life? A scene from his life is very popular in post-antique art. What is it? This is different from the ‘Calumn of Apelles’. 4) What is a Sibyl? Why do they appear in such later Christian settings as the Sistine chapel? Tell me about Virgil’s fourth Eclogue: what is it and how is it significant in this context? What are the names and generally aceppted attributes of the final twelve sibyls? Why do they number 12?
