In what ways do the main characters defy expectations?

Let’s look back on what we’ve learned together during this first unit. We talked about how to approach literature—what literary criticism is and how it can offer us many ways to look at a novel. We also read an article about why students should read literature. We learned about one of the most exciting times in American history, the Harlem Renaissance—a response to the oppression, segregation and racial violence of the time period. This era provided a showcase of the various contributions of African Americans from jazz and dance to poetry, prose and novels. Folks couldn’t wait to get to Harlem back then. We also read Passing by Nella Larsen and “Sweat” by Zora Neale Hurston which depicted the very different lives and experiences of African American women. Reflect on what we’ve read, discussed, your notes, PowerPoints, and videos that we’ve looked at to enrich your answer.

b) How do wealth and status show up in Passing and how are the characters affected? Give at least 3 specific ways or examples and explain your choices.

Discuss and demonstrate how to create 5 different dilutions (ranging from 0.01-0.15 M) with different concentrations using M1V1 =M2V2.
Assume the concentration of the stock is 0.5M and the total volume of each dilution sample is 10 mL. Show the concentration for each dilution and the volume of stock used to prepare each dilution.

The PTEN gene is deleted in multiple types of advanced human cancers. The resulting loss of the PTEN protein contributes to the uncontrolled growth of cells. Indeed, cells lacking PTEN have elevated levels PI(3,4,5)P3 and PKB activity. Because PKB exerts an anti-apoptotic effect, loss of PTEN reduces the programmed cell death that is the normal fate of many cells. In certain cells, such as neuronal stem cells, absence of PTEN not only prevents apoptosis, but also leads to stimulation of cell cycle progression and an enhanced rate of cell proliferation. Knockout mice lacking PTEN have big brains with an excess numbers of neurons, attesting to PTEN’s importance in the control of normal development.
