Music Appreciation Analysis

The principles of unity & variety apply to all music, regardless of compositional style or historical period.

Now that you are familiar with the concepts in the first section of the course (Basic Musical Concepts), and you have seen how they work on different pieces of music, try your hand, mouse, and ears at how they operate in a music selection that you may not have heard yet.

Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White (4:08)

Your analysis should include:
1. The number of different musical ideas you hear in the piece (can we say that there are two ideas A and B? Or is there only one?)
2. The timings (start and stop times) of the different sections of the piece. (Hint: Listen for changes in musical ideas and timbre, or for points when one instrument gives way to another.)
3. How the following elements contribute to unity and variety in the sections you identified (give timings):
Dynamics: Where does the music get louder or softer? Is there any apparent reason for those changes?
Timbre: Where do different instruments take over the melody?
Pitch: What is the general pitch level of the piece? Are there wide variations in pitch level?
4. Although there are sections that feature one instrument over others, do you think this is a piece for a solo performer or for an ensemble?
5. List of the characteristics of the musical style closest to the one this piece exemplifies. (Hint: Revisit the class titled Folk Music, Art Music, and All That Jazz)
6. Do you think this piece serves (or could serve) a specific purpose?
7. Does this piece have any specific connotation(s) for you?

Science of Fingerprints

Use the concepts and the material from the class regarding the science of fingerprints to write a 2–4-page paper answering the following three questions:

Part 1

Explain the principles and processes used in the analysis, comparison, evaluation, and verification of latent fingerprints. Explain the ACE-V process. Break down each step, and explain what is done by an examiner, and why each step is vital to the process.

Part 2

Define class characteristics and individual characteristics of latent fingerprints. Present one example of each as they deal with forensic science, and also specifically with fingerprints. Explain how your examples fit the definitions. At what step of the ACE-V process are class characteristics and individual characteristics of a print looked at?

Part 3

Examine the print titled “Young Print” found in Course Documents. How many bifurcations do see, if any? How many islands do you see? Ridge endings? Based on the number of bifurcations, islands, and ridges found, is this fingerprint of high enough quality to be used to find a match? Could analysis be done on this print? Can comparisons be done of this print to prints on file? Could examination and evaluation be done on the print?

MYTH, OSIRIS, AND JESUS

S‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌tudents should construct a formal essay that includes an introductory paragraph with a thesis, a body of paragraphs supporting or exploring the thesis, and a conclusion. The essay should be comprised of 1,250 or more words; and, as indicated below, students will be responsible for revising their essays. Essays must be typed in a highly legible font (fourteen-point font preferred), double spaced, and conform – in terms of form, grammar and style – to standard English. Students should provide a title for their essay, and they should provide their name at the top left-hand corner of their essay. Unless students cite outside sources, no documentation is required, but should students chose to document outside sources, the style of the Modern Language Association (MLA) is preferred. Of course, if students quote from the reading selection, they should place that material inside of quotation marks. Quotation from the reading selection should be limited to one or two lines. For understanding the nature of mythology, “On the Existence of San‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌ta Claus and Miracle on 34th Street,” Link: On the Existence of Santa Claus and Miracle on 34th Download On the Existence of Santa Claus and Miracle on 34th For exploring the resurrection stories of Osiris and Jesus, Link: Osiris and Download Osiris and ESSAY PROMPT: Students should write an essay in which they address the characteristics of myths, examine the ancient Egyptian story of Osiris’ resurrection, and compare the story of Osiris with Christian accounts concerning the resurrection of Jesus. To what does the word “myth” refer; or what, in other words, are the characteristics of “myth”? What are some examples of myths and their truths? What is the story of Osiris’ resurrection, and what truths did the story of Osiris intend to convey to the ancient Egyptians? What is the story of Jesus’ resurrection, and what truths did the story intend to convey to Christians? What conclusion can be reached based upon these two stories? Students may use that conclusion as the thesis statem‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌ent of their essay.
