For this week’s REFLECTION, please write something having to do with CONFLICT(s). Drama depends on conflict, so I am interested in what you see as the main conflict(s) in the movie so far. I know that the MAIN conflict is between Blanche and Stanley, but that is over-obvious. For our purposes here, I am more interested in the conflict(s) over what the main characters REPRESENT. Also, I am intrigued by the INNER conflict(s) experienced by the main characters. Please, then, discuss CONFLICT(S) in some way as you perform this week’s reflection, and please support whatever assertion(s) you make with specifics and details from the movie. This prompt gives you LOTS of latitude, and there is, once again, no wrong answer (How could there be? Different kinds of conflicts abound!), but I am hoping for something interpretively substantial that eschews the whole Rotten Tomatoes/Thumbs Up-Down thing. I think you know by now how badly I want to be generous to you, so just go for it, and thanks in advance for making it easy for me to award you full credit.

(4) Now that you’ve filled in the title, heading, and thesis statement part of the project, you’re going to start hashing out all the details you want to include in your paper. Let’s start with topic sentences.

The lines where you need to write your topic sentences are highlighted in light green. The topic sentences for each of your body paragraphs should do two things: (a) remind the reader of the thesis and (b) tell the reader what point that specific paragraph will be making. These should be complete sentences, even in your outline.

After you’ve filled in the light green highlighted sections with your topic sentences, it’s time to decide what details you’re going to include in each paragraph. These sections are highlighted in orange. Remember — you want to be sure you avoid repetition and stay on topic. All details in your body paragraphs should support the point that specific paragraph is making.

Remember, too, that you’ll need to include information from your outside sources. This requires correctly incorporating the information you want to use (by either quoting directly or paraphrasing — read the Parapraphsing vs. Direct Quotations (Links to an external site.) chapter in the etext to review) and including proper in-text citation and a Reference page.

Something to consider: The outline provided for this assignment allows for four body paragraphs, with five details per paragraph. You may need more or less, depending on where you plan on taking your writing. A video showing you how to add sections is included in the lecture material in this unit.

The purpose of this exercise to hone your skills identifying, photographing and identifying different compositional and visual design elements. You should use a digital still camera, but a phone will be fine too.

PART 1 – Lines (4 shots)

Find and photograph things that demonstrate LINES in composition. Include one shot for each – Horizontal, Vertical, Diagonal, and Curve. The lines must be the DOMINANT visual element in the shot. That is, the viewer’s first thought must be “Oh look at that line!” (Which also means don’t stand twenty feet from a table and say the lines of the table count. They won’t, because the lines will only be about two percent of the pixels used in the image. Fill up your frame!).

PART 2 – Basic Shapes (4 shots)

Find and photograph BASIC SHAPES in composition. Include one shot for each – Circle, Square, Triangle, and Hexagon.
Again, the shape must be the DOMINANT element in the shot. (Note: the hexagon is hardest to find, but they’re out there. In nature. In architecture.

PART 3 – Z-Axis (2 shots)

Compose and shoot 2 different photos that demonstrate FOREGROUND-MIDDLEGROUND-BACKGROUND compositions within the frame. They should be found locations, but if you want to have some fun with it, stage it with friends posing. Just make sure you capture the spirit of the compositional relationship. You’ll get bonus points if it’s fun, entertaining and something to make the viewer think “Oh, what a fun thing to do!” (Boring things will still pass, but I’ll get cranky by the time I finish grading, and if get to yours late in the process you’ll wish you were more adventurous). (Just saying…).

Find examples in your daily life. This is not three separate shots, two, and they express foreground, middle ground, background.

PART 4 – Rule of Thirds (2 shots)

Compose a shot that demonstrates the RULE OF THIRDS principle. DO NOT stage these shots. Find examples in your daily life or pose a human. Again, make sure to fill your frame in a way to demonstrate strong rule of thirds composition.

Work it:. Don’t just throw a piece of pizza on a table and assume it fulfills the triangle assignment. One objective is to force you to look around and see visual design elements. Please please pleas make it interesting. (Or fail the class, get kicked out of school and have your car stolen). (Okay, those won’t happen. I’m a little punchy from looking at way too many bad pictures for this assignment. Please help me out here).

DO NOT use Photoshop or software to crop or modify the photos. Everything must be done in the camera. The only modification allowed is to reduce the size of each image by following these guidelines How to RESIZE and ADD images to Discussion Assignments

LABEL EACH SHOT to get full points. For example, “LINE-Vertical, SHAPE-Circle, Z-Axis, Rule of Thirds, etc.

YOU MUST shoot the photos yourself and DO NOT use photos previously shot! They must be new and fresh. This also means you may not use anything downloaded from the web. Get up, go out, shoot.

FINALLY: How to package it:
Create a Word or Pages document and copy /insert your images into it. Label each of the 12 different shots to identify which is which.
The size of your document is limited to 5MB so you will need to downsize your photos like you’ve been doing in the discussions before inserting them. Once built, export a PDF document and submit that. Do not upload more than one document. Here’s an example, though I’d love for you to do something more creative.
