The course’s eBook is the required and only source that should be used for
this midterm essay. If you use any additional source(s), you will be penalized 10 points. You
must cite the literature using MLA formatting. Literature entries must appear on the Work(s)
Cited in alphabetical order. In-text parenthetical citations must be properly used in the body of

This midterm essay must include evidence from the text (quotes, paraphrases, and summaries) to
support the question. All evidence should end with an in-text citation, including a summary and
paraphrase an in-text citation and work cited are required.
In addition, personal observations and experiences is acceptable if it supports the question.
However, make sure to limit the use of 1st person pronouns. Omit phrases such as “I believe,” “I
feel,” “I think,” “In my opinion,” “Personally,” etc.
A midterm essay containing more than 30% of primary source material will earn a failing grade.
This midterm essay must be numbered in paragraph form and formatted according to MLA
guidelines, format (12 point, Times New Roman, left justification, double spaced, and indented
paragraphs) with a heading (student’s name, instructor’s name, course, and date) in the upper left
corner of the first page. In the upper right-hand corner, insert a header with your last name and
page number.
Failure to follow the above guidelines will result in up to a 10-point deduction. In addition, you
should include an in-text citation as well as a works cited page. Failed to do so will result in
following automatic penalties:
• One half letter grade (5 points) for errors within in-text citations and/or works cited
• One letter grade (10 points) for no in-text citation(s)
• Two letter grades (20 points) for no work cited

should only use the readings from module 1-3.

For essay #2, students will write an analysis of a visual argument. In this analysis, students will examine how visual, verbal, and possibly audio, elements work together to create either an effective or ineffective argument.

A Tip:
Isolate images that catch your attention. Choose an image that is compelling to you. An image that enrages, excites, motivates, catches you off guard, or that makes you think will be easier to analyze. The images you choose can be current or they can be historical.
Keep in mind the purpose of a visual analysis is not to comment on whether or not you agree with or disagree with, like or dislike what the image is saying. Instead, your goal is to analyze how the visual creates meaning and how well (or not well) the visual’s argument works.
Strategies (these are suggestions; if you can think of another approach, go for it!)
Examine one image and comment on it
Analyze two photographs of an event from magazines with different political biases; two news photographs from articles addressing the same story from different angles of visions; or two images on Websites presenting different perspectives on a recent issues of public interest.
Examine two different ads (print or commercial) that sell essentially the same product but that are clearly targeting different audiences.

INTRODUCTION
Often in a business environment you will be asked to give a presentation of your knowledge, research, or plan to a group of stakeholders. In this assessment, you will present your capstone project. Imagine that your audience is a leader in the organization or industry that you chose, that they have not read your paper, and that you need to present the highlights to them in less than 10 minutes. This presentation should contain all of the main elements found in your paper and incorporate appropriate charts or graphics, as well as cite academic and business resources appropriately.

Submission Requirements
Communication: Communicate in a manner that is scholarly, professional, respectful, and consistent with expectations for professional practice. Original work and critical thinking are required. Your presentation must be free of errors that detract from the overall message.
Media presentation: Your presentation of your capstone paper should have presentation slides with audio recording of how you would present to your intended audience. Your presentation should be minimum of 10 slides and maximum of 20 slides, and should not exceed 8 minutes. Add speaker’s notes or a transcript to ensure accessibility for everyone.
Resources: Include citations at the end of the presentation. Remember to cite your sources for graphics and visuals used.
APA guidelines: Resources and citations are formatted according to current APA style and format.

Read over Joseph P. Ellis’s His Excellency: George Washington. You should read the book in its entirety, highlighting or taking notes over ideas and events you find interesting. Then prepare an essay that explains at least FOUR of the following seven features of Washington’s personal life and his contributions to public service:
Washington’s personality and family influences
his education compared to other U.S. founders, and what this meant throughout his career
his success (or not) as a businessman, and the role of western lands in his finances
Washington’s experience as a military commander, both as a young officer and as general in the American revolution

It is unnecessary to address all of these features; it is better to select four that you feel comfortable addressing and explain each as thoroughly as possible, devoting about a page to each topic.
Do not separate your essay into four separate sub-categories; rather, weave the four into one coherent essay with a consistent thesis. Your essay must use at least four quotations, one for each feature, but these should be no more than a sentence or two in length. The majority of the paper must be in your own words; essays that are excessively filled with direct quotes from the book will be penalized. The purpose of this assignment is for you to demonstrate understanding of Ellis’s biography. Finally, your paper should have a proper introduction and conclusion.
