In the essays you have read on climate change and environmental issues by Naomi Klein, Alice Chen and Vivek Murthy, Ben Adler, Dan Crenshaw, and Charles J. Moore, there is a lot of ink spilled about climate change and its solutions, but arguably just as much ink spilled on the terms of the climate change debate. Klein, for instance, poses the research question, “Why don’t we care while the world is burning?” Chen and Murthy, on the other hand, analyze whether taking an optimistic or positive view of climate change action could inspire more people to advocate for change and do their part. Republican Congressman Dan Crenshaw asks whether the left’s ownership of the issues (and the common rejection of climate change as an exigent issue by conservatives) has made it difficult to enact effective change. In short, all of these essays are, in addition to being about the facts of climate change and the actions against it, about the deeply political rhetoric of climate change action and inaction.

This assignment prompts you to enter into this conversation with your own analysis and synthesis of the rhetoric in your own op-ed on climate change. You’re being tasked with not only cataloging and studying the information given to you in these five essays, but also analyzing each essay’s argumentative tactics, what these arguments share, and where they differ. Ultimately, you’ll be asked to apply what you learn from these arguments to a new context: Hunter College. You will pivot from what is argued and explored in these essays to your own analysis of the issue in one specific context, taking a larger problem like climate change that feels unwieldy and numbing and making it small and manageable.

INSTRUCTIONS
Papers are to be four pages in length (double-spaced, with font no larger than 12). That means at least four full pages of text – not 3 ½. This is not a research paper – in writing the paper you are to make use of only the primary sources we have read for class. Select only one question to answer.
In articulating your argument in the paper, all claims and points must derive from and be demonstrated from the texts themselves. Show you have read the material! You may read secondary material for your own benefit, but it is not to be used in the paper. What you are doing is making your point or argument by citing the texts themselves. This means that you have to have read the texts carefully with an eye toward noticing subtlety and nuance.
Since this is a short paper, it also means that your presentation/argument has to be very tight and concise – you have to think through what you wish to say and lay it out clearly and in a way that supports the points you wish to make.
You must also take account of those passages in the text that might not support your interpretation – you cannot just ignore them and “stack the deck” by only choosing passages that support your view.

This case is far more complex than the Beach Buddy case and there are more moving parts to the case. I am expecting that you will incorporate all aspects of running a business into your analysis. In this case it will be necessary to incorporate a significant financial analysis to support your strategic analysis. I say this because in Beach Buddy, many of you just ignored the financial aspects of running Mary’s business. It is insufficient to say what you think should be done without the corresponding analysis and critical thinking to support your strategy, you must address the WHY. Why are you choosing to implement this strategy? What is supporting your decision?
A full SWOT analysis is always a good place to start because it will assist you to develop your thinking – follow the strengths of the company and use your strategy to avoid the weaknesses.
An assignment of 2 or 3 pages double spaced with a large font is guaranteed to get you a corresponding failing grade. I am looking for you to demonstrate that you can think like an entrepreneur and develop the subsequent analysis that leads to proposing a solid strategy.

You have to put yourself in the place of Dr. Winslow, look at the situation in which the business finds itself and figure out what to do, immediately and in the long run. There is more information available in this case and therefore you need to take into account more factors. People, market, economic, competitors, sales, investments to date, competition etc. What would you do if you were Winslow? Why would you choose that course of action? What should he do immediately? In the long run, what should he do in order to make his clock viable and have his business survive?
