Once you train your eye to look, it is not hard to find that the world is rife with injustices both great and small. One goal of this course is to prompt students to consider thinking about these moments of injustice within their larger contexts, and to see them in places that previously went unacknowledged. These can be illustrations of implicit bias you see, structures of power that create inequities that you notice, everyday cultural discourse you hear that contributes to social unfairness, or something else.
Task
Starting this week, you will write in a “diary” recording instances of systemic injustice you witness in your day-to-day life or in the global news. You should describe the phenomenon you witnessed or read about as well as any additional research you did to understand what was happening, then analyze it according to the course concepts we are discussing. What impact does it have? How did you distinguish this as systemic injustice? What categories of identity were in play? What would need to change for this wrong to be righted? Be sure to focus on impact of the phenomenon you chose (rather than the personal intent of the participants).
If you’re not sure where to start, you can always start backward from a big concept to a local example. I’d recommend considering the phenomena mentioned in our modules as inspiration. For example, if you learn something new about US immigration policies or problems in ethnographic studies, you can look for an effect of that phenomenon within your daily experience (maybe your neighbor immigrated to the US, maybe there’s a recent ethnographic study you encountered) or in the global news (where are refugee crises happening in the world, what prompted them, what policies have other governments implemented, etc.).
This assignment will serve as an extended brainstorming activity for your upcoming podcast assignment, so you’ll want to choose examples you feel strongly about, and that are complex enough for further inquiry should you choose.

Still confused about what types of situations could make good material for a Diary of Systemic Injustices entry? Consider the following student examples from last week (well done, Apil Sanyashi and Kaleb Baldwin!):
Within the last few years, the Scranton School District has let go of almost a hundred teachers, ended multiple after-school programs, and removed countless recreational courses from its curriculum. Unfortunately, this is not a rare sight to see. Urban schools from Chicago to Atlanta have been facing budget cuts for decades. On the other hand, many school districts across the country, primarily those that reside in suburban neighborhoods, have been able to provide their students with limitless access to technology, clubs, counselors, and up-to-date textbooks. But why is this happening? Why are some public schools so much more equipped to teach their students than others? Well, the root cause behind the inequality in America’s public schools is funding. More specifically, the source of funding for public schools. According to Alana Semuels of the Atlantic public schools garner most of their funding from poverty taxes collected by local cities, not the state or federal government. This creates a massive wealth discrepancy in public schools as school districts that are based near wealthier neighborhoods receive more funding compared to school districts placed in high poverty neighborhoods. At the heart of an unequal public school system lies an unequal distribution of opportunity. An unequal distribution that tends to disproportionately harm minority students. Linda Darling-Hammond from the Brookings Institute writes that minority students receive significantly less instructional resources than other students. A study that spanned 900 Texas school districts showed that a large majority of the academic variance shown in minority students was a direct result of insufficient access to resources. Moreover, the inequality that exists in the public school system spans far beyond the twelve years a student spends with their k-12 education. It holds implicit costs such as lost opportunities for many minority students who were never allowed to excel or explore an academic, recreational, or trade field. Fields that may have provided multiple students the opportunity to escape poverty. The solution to this problem isn’t one-dimensional. Each school district faces different challenges that depend on things such as its location or demographic. However, if the federal government or at the very least the state government was able to conduct a thorough analysis of the necessary resources each student should be provided with and distributed funds accordingly. It would be a strong step toward ending inequality in the public school system and providing opportunities for many low-income students.

Legalizing Marijuana
Legalizing marijuana should have been the easiest thing for
the government to agree on. The healthy benefits itself should be the main
reasons they would want to legalize it, also the amount of money they would
make from smokers’ shops and save from housing prisoners that have minor
chargers. A lot of people think that cannabis is bad but there are a lot of
people who think that it is good, including medical professionals. There are a
few states who have passed laws for medical purposes and aliments. I believe
that legalizing marijuana in all states can benefit and heal like it has been
doing just legally.
Although, we all know that legalization of marijuana has
been a seemingly debatable topic. Most individuals think is bad and it should
not be legalized. As I stated, previously there are some health benefits to
marijuana (debatable or not). Marijuana has been used to treat medical
conditions and symptoms. It has been known to help cancer patients, pain, and
anxiety. These symptoms can also be part of some physical and mental
conditions.
If used properly it can have some positive effects. Most
people associate cannabis with just getting high or going on trip. However, it
helps the body relax, relive stress and calm the mind. Some studies have shown
that it does not kill brain cells…like most people would have you to believe
(and those are usually non-smokers). It can help an individual with creative
energy which allows them to produce great work.Think of this question; if
marijuana is so bad for individuals then why does most physicians oftentimes
prescribe to cancer patients, aids patients, migraines, and glaucoma.
Marijuana may have some negative effects to compared to some
other drugs it may be the less harmful. There are so many other drugs that are
so much more addictive. For example: alcohol has been known as one of the most
highly addictive negative effect on individuals and the community. Alcohol has
caused more car crashes and deaths than marijuana. Marijuana has come nowhere
near those leading causes of death.
Recently, there has been a major wave in CBD products. The
CBD fad has gain major popularity in most states due having legalized medical
and recreational cannabis. This wave has caused more people to feel freer to
consume these products. Most individuals are going back to the flower child
era”.
In
closing, just about anything and everything can be detrimental to our health.
Over indulge (in eating), shopping, video games, edibles, CBD, these are just a
few. I’m sure you get the point! Yes, there some negative effects to marijuana,
but it more like grandma on skates than grandma on a roller coaster. The best
way for individuals to feel comfortable about smoking openly, the State of
Texas definitely need to look into implementing and legalizing marijuana. This
will also, cut down smuggling drugs across the border.
Some
supporters say “we should begin to reflect that reality in our state and
federal legislation, and stop acting as if otherwise law-abiding marijuana
smokers are part of the crime problem. They are not, and it is absurd to
continue using law enforcement resources arresting them.” (Gary) Many advocates
also say, “Far more harm is caused by marijuana prohibition than by marijuana
itself.”(Gary)

ase Study 2: HIPAA Violations
Health care leaders must understand and respect the depth of the ethical implications related to the use of technology and data in all aspects of management, from patient care to operations management. The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Office for Civil Rights (OCR) identifies real-life cases of HIPAA violations on its website and these cases are shared in the media.
Chapter 7 of the Ethics and Professionalism for Healthcare Managers text summarizes six of the most significant violation cases in recent years. Choose one of these cases to evaluate. Research the OCR investigation and outcomes in detail. Research the OCR investigation and outcomes in detail. In your main post, summarize the details of the case and violations, and explain how and why actions taken within the organizations violated ethical principles. Recommend a strategy a health care manager might take to ensure this type of violation can be prevented. Be sure to cite and reference your additional research resources in your work.

▶ Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
In 1996, Congress passed HIPAA. The Act had several objectives, including providing health insurance coverage for those with pre-existing conditions, reducing fraud and abuse, and standardizing health information. It was also concerned with ensuring security and privacy of health information. The legislation had several titles to address all of these objectives. For example, the Administration Simplification provisions dealt with rules for compliance with this Act. They also addressed electronic claims submission, including standards of privacy, confidentiality, and maintenance of health information. It mandated that there be a unique identifier for each patient, employer, health plan, and provider in an attempt to protect patient privacy (Shi & Singh, 2019).
The positive features of the law were that electronic transfers of data became easier and more cost-effective. Security upgrades also improved the confidentiality of patient data. These efforts protected patients’ right to know how their personal information was used within a healthcare organization. Currently, there is also increased awareness of the potential for violating confidentiality. This awareness has improved patient confidentiality. Improvements include procedures for taking health histories, avoidance of inappropriate conversations about patients, and methods to prevent marketing firms from accessing patient names and addresses. In addition, simple procedures, such as the placement of computers, help avoid unnecessary violations of confidentiality. Ethics aspects of autonomy and respect for patients are part of the provisions of HIPAA.
In 2013, the federal government enacted the Omnibus Final Rule for HIPAA. The Rule requires patient notification when there is confidentiality violation of patient health information. If patients pay out-of-pocket for care, they can request that the provider not report treatment information to their insurance plan. There are also limits on marketing information that a physician can provide without written authorization from the patient. Likewise, the physician cannot sell the patient’s health information without the patient’s written consent. In addition, HCAs must use security in technology when sending copies of the patient’s health information (Health and Human Services, 2015).
In 2017, the Department of Health and Human Services called for volunteers for a pilot study to change HIPAA compliance reviews. Using the data from this study could assist in updating procedures and lead to system-wide compliance. Changes in compliance mechanisms promise 9 billion dollar savings each year. The pilot will assess whether proactive reviews could improve compliance (HIPAA Compliance Journal, 2018). In the pilot test, volunteers would submit their electronic files for review and testing by the HHS. If noncompliance was found, the HHS would provide guidance and an action plan for meeting compliance standards. Once participants achieved compliance, they would receive a certificate and be exempt from review for one year (HIPAA Compliance Journal, 2018).
What do the changes in the HIPAA law mean for health administrators? Of course, they will be responsible for ensuring that their organizations comply with HIPAA and the Omnibus Final Rule. HCAs will also have to ensure that they provide staff training and that documents are correct. If there is an investigation on compliance with the Omnibus Final Rule, HCAs may serve as part of the team that responds to the investigation. HIPAA remains a part of the HCA’s life and will continue to undergo change. While addressing ongoing changes may be stressful, HIPAA’s intent is to prevent harm to the patient and the organization. Therefore, HCAs have an ethical duty to comply with HIPAA’s guidelines, provide accurate patient information, and practice rule utility.

Option 1: Raja Yoga: The Way of Experimentation.

Option 2: Karma Yoga: The Way of Action
If you struggle with focusing on consequences or reputation (such as focusing on grades), work on acting without a care about consequence.
If you struggle with “being in the wake” rather than “in the boat,” try to get into the boat. Reflect on what is holding you back and what it would take to get into the boat (into the present moment).

Option 3: Bhakti Yoga: The Way of Love
Think about someone your love (may be a person, pet, God, etc.). Explore the ways in which your needs and expectations might get in the way of loving more deeply. Try to move past your own fears or selfish desires to deepen your love and express it more fully.

Option 4: Jnana Yoga: The Way of Reflection
Write a short essay on how your self is actually one with the Universal Self and our relationship to the infinite universe of time and space.
Example :
I chose the 3rd option: The Way of Love. To be honest there are a lot of things that hold me back from loving others. For one I have very strong expectations and have a need for perfectionism. It is very hard for me to accept that other people do things differently than me so when they don’t it creates a lot of conflict. I find this to be an incredibly toxic trait because no one CAN do everything the way I do or like. You can learn so much from people’s differences. I need to learn to accept flaws because I am flawed myself and that is only fair. The other thing that holds me back is fear of failure. I tend to hold back when loving people in fear that things won’t work out. It is almost like its a defense mechanism. I dont say or do what i want because I am scared I will mess things up and fail. Maybe a whole new great opportunity will arise if decide to jump out of my comfort zone. Loving people should never come at a price even if failure is the ultimate one. It is better to try and fail then not and never know what you missed out on
