This is my abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify the areas of the brain associated with development and
maintenance in substance addiction and how one’s brain mechanisms become compromised
from substance use. Although there is a stigma in society that addiction is from moral weakness
and failure from free will, science indicates that it is a chronic disease and should be treated as
such. The definition of disease is any harmful deviation from the normal structure or functional
state of an organism. There are other indicators that predispose someone to be more likely to
evolve an addiction, like genetic and environmental influences. However, using a substance
fundamentally changes the brain that provokes continued use. These cravings origmate in certain
parts of the brain and reinforce reward-seeking behavior. Unfortunately, millions of Americans
suffer from addiction and understanding the brain’s responsibility in it, can help combat society’s
negative perception on those who suffer from this disease.
