In this fun TED talk from Peter Doolittle, you will learn more about one very important aspect of your memory – your working memory. In fact, you might even get to exercise your working memory a bit during the TED talk. What are your thoughts on the information covered in this video?

People often have mixed emotions in regards to punishment of offenders. Some view justice to be harsh judgment and punishment without mercy and perceive love to be a sentimentality where wrong-doing should be overlooked without consequence. The Bible offers a different view of justice and love and shows us that both are integral parts of God’s character. How can this be? Where does justice and love meet, and how does this apply to the field of criminal justice? It is important as practitioners in this field that we not only have sound beliefs and convictions in regards to this, but that we are able to support what we believe with biblical teachings. For this Discussion, I’d like you to take some time to explore the answers to the above questions and to study how these questions are answered in the Bible.

The first clip covers memory loss/amnesia. Please keep in mind that the man in the video clip, Clive Wearing, is an extreme example of memory loss. In fact, his memory loss is a bit baffling to scientists. The fact that he can still play piano (a procedure) and make small talk (also a procedure) yet cannot remember what has transpired over the course of a few minutes also illustrates the difference between types of memories (episodic & procedural) and that they are located in different areas of the brain. What are your thoughts on Clive Wearings case? Remember that his case is an extreme form of amnesia, but it should help to illustrate the differences between procedural and episodic memory and the fact that these two forms of memory are stored in different brain areas.
