The final essay will be your response to a case study from Harvard Business School on the application of ethics and inclusion on leadership and decision-making. The case requires you to understand the subject of the case (John Rogers, Jr.), the company he runs (Ariel Investments), and the difficult situation he’s been put in as both a CEO and a caring member of the community.

ASSIGNMENT:

Write an essay that provides a brief synopsis of the case study and then expresses your reaction to the case as well as answers the Critical Thinking questions below. These answers should help to direct your responses and how you think about the case, requiring you to think of how you would handle the situation if you were in John Rogers’ shoes. Your essay should demonstrate your understanding of the case as well as the core material we’ve learned throughout the course. and applying the things we’ve learned throughout the course.
Technical Writing Requirements:
Your paper should be in APA format, include a title page and reference page, and be a minimum of 750 words.
Four peer-reviewed sources are minimally required: at least two must be from the textbook, at least one from the “Additional Reading” material, and at least one should be a peer-reviewed source you find to support your response.
CRITICAL THINKING QUESTIONS (to address in response):
Question 1:
According to professor Julia Battilana of Harvard Business School, there are three types of leaders: (1) Agitator – surfaces the problems; (2) Innovator – develops the solutions to the problems; (3) Orchestrator – spreads the solutions so that others can apply them.
What type(s) of leader is John? (Note that good leaders can be more than one type.)
Are John’s actions driven by emotions that eventually cause him to be reckless? Or does he follow a logical decision-making process with clear and achievable outcomes in mind?
Question 2:
Should John, as the CEO, publically advocate for controversial issues? Consider that we know that decisions should drive by pure emotion to “do the right thing”. There are three key variables that should be considered: (1) Success of their company relative to the industry; (2) Their personal passion for a particular issue; and (3) The CEO’s risk tolerance.

Question 3:
What are the risks and rewards to John Rogers? Discuss both and weigh out the pros and cons of your position based on this framework.

Write a research or “term paper,” similar to what you would write for any class in the humanities and social sciences. Identify a topic—a musical genre, a performer, an instrument, a musical movement—and write the short proposal for your discussion section. Your TA may have suggestions on how to further refine or develop your idea. Develop a bibliography of 4-5 (minimum) peer-reviewed, academic sources about the topic, and read them. These should be books or academic articles; you may reference additional online sources as well, but not in place of these 4-5 sources. Consult Grove Music Online or the Garland Encyclopedia of World Music (databases available through the UCR Library website) to get started. Individual topic entries in those databases include bibliographies that can help you find other sources. A search in databases like JSTOR, MUSE, or RILM will also help you find information.
This is a course focused on music, so make sure you spend some time listening to the music you are writing about! YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music, and other streaming services all offer access to millions of recordings of music from virtually every corner of the globe. Include references to particular songs, recordings, or videos in your paper, citing where you found access to them.
In addition to the guidelines above regarding length and sources, your paper should have a clear thesis statement in the introduction, ideas that are developed in the body, and a conclusion. A research paper is not a dry summary of facts. It is an interpretation of a given topic, and as such, a contribution to how we know and understand that subject. That interpretation, and the scope of the paper itself, should be evident right at the beginning. Rather than, for instance, starting with:
“This is a paper about music in Zimbabwe. I will describe the main instruments and genres played there.”
A much better paper might begin:
“Musicians in Zimbabwe played a key role in the revolutionary movement against white minority rule. In this paper, I will trace how chimurenga songs in the 1970s inspired Shona youth to value their cultural heritage and struggle against the oppressive policies of the government.”
