Both inductive and deductive reasoning are important and useful; they are essentially two sides of the same coin. Deductive reasoning starts with a premise and works toward a conclusion, working from the general to a specific conclusion. Inductive reasoning does the opposite. It works from specifics to a more general conclusion.
Initial Post:
Create both a valid and sound deductive and an inductive argument.
Which of your arguments do you think is stronger?
Why do you think this is the case? Is one type of argument always stronger than the other?
Is one type of argument more useful than the other? Why is this the case?

Here are the points and questions to address in your essay:

• Briefly summarize the general conclusions offered by each author concerning the significance
and meaning of the sculpture at La Venta. What are the similarities in their interpretations? What
are the key differences? Avoid quotes (using them only very sparingly) and instead synthesize
their ideas in your own words.

• Do you feel that one of the authors is more interpretive than the other? Which one do you feel is
more interpretive, and why do you think this? Explain and give clear examples of when you think
an author may have gone too far with her/his interpretation or, by contrast, not far enough.

• What are the respective strengths and weaknesses of each author’s methods? When thinking
about this, remember our discussion (and the terminology we used) about how changes in
meaning can, sometimes, occur through space or over time. Do you think each author does an
adequate job of addressing how she/he is arriving at her/his interpretations and the methods
she/he is utilizing to do so? Does one author over-reach with their interpretations? Does one not
go far enough? Be specific.

• Which essay do you feel is the most convincing and why do you think this? Make sure to tell me, at
the end of the essay, which one you prefer and why you prefer it over the other.

Essay 1

Consider class relations in the United
States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Using specific
examples, discuss the relationship between big business, government, and
the working class during and in the aftermath of the Civil War. How did big business and government seek to control
wealth through the Gilded Age? What forms
of resistance and rebellion emerged to challenge the dominant classes for
control of wealth and political power? How
did Progressivism address these challenges?
Please focus your answer on the period 1863-1916.

Essay 2

Since the Progressive Era the United States government
has increased national regulation of the American economy. To justify this, national leaders often
stress the need for government authority to balance wealth and promote
stability. Using specific examples discuss how government institutions have
responded to various economic and moral issues over the past 100 years. Do you believe government regulation is
needed to prevent class conflict? Please
focus your answer 1917 to the present? *hint

Analytical essay

A primary historical source is a document that was created during the past by a person (or persons) who lived during that period. Primary sources are the building blocks of history!
Select any ONE of the below primary sources that interests you and, after reading the source, write an analytical essay in which you summarize the main points of the article (this should take about 2/3 of your essay) and then analyze/critique the source (about 1/3 of your essay).
Try to answer at least some of the following questions in your essay:
Who is the author of your chosen source? What is the time period of the source and what is the topic? What might this article tell a researcher about the time period? What is he/she trying to say? What is his/her point of view? Does he/she make a convincing case? Why or why not? What does the author leave out (if anything)? Does the author exhibit a particular bias? Is there anything in this source that might be relevant to the world today?
Note: Depending on the source you choose, not all of the above questions may be relevant. Answer those which are relevant to your source.
Try to select a document/source that interests you. If it is a topic/person that you are unfamiliar with, be sure to do at least a little research to give you a better background for analyzing the source. If you would like to use additional sources (internet web sites, books, periodicals, etc.,) you are more than welcome to, as long as your focus is on the primary source. Your essay should consist of two sections: a summary of the article and then an analysis of the article.
In writing your essay, you should follow the below guidelines:
Your essay should be a MINIMUM of 800 words (it can be longer if you like).
Your completed essay should consist of a summary (about 2/3 of your essay) and an analysis (roughly 1/3 of your essay).
All persons, events, concepts in your paper should be introduced/explained clearly…in other words, write your essay as if your audience was another student!
Your essay should follow the basic style guidelines of MLA, APA or Chicago (your choice).
Your essay should have a cover page and bibliography page in the style you have chosen (these pages do NOT count towards the essay length).
Your essay should be double-spaced with #12 fonts and 1-inch margins.
The essay needs to be written entirely in your own words. Use quotes very sparingly and only to highlight a point you are trying to make. Quoted material does NOT count towards the length of your essay.

You are a police officer who has been assigned to a local high school as a school resource officer. You would like to recommend the use of restorative justice techniques to your resource officer program supervisor as you believe these will help youthful offenders assimilate back into the school system after being away. Communication Themes in Negotiations
For this week’s discussion, you will again need to reflect on your negotiation history and identify a negotiation experience that you consider significant. You should be selecting a different negotiation experience for each week’s discussion so that you are exploring many different scenarios and applying your growing understanding of strategic negotiation to those scenarios. For example, if you have been using family-based negotiation events in Week 1 and Week 2, try using a professional (e.g., business or organization) negotiation for this week. You should not be using the same negotiation example each week.
For the first paragraph of your initial post, describe the negotiation event that you are using for this week’s discussion, including the participants, the key issues, and the outcome.

Active listening is an important skill for leaders and negotiators. Being fully attentive to the other party and asking clarifying questions to ensure understanding are the primary skills. Evaluate the listening behaviors in your negotiation scenario.

What behaviors did you see that support your conclusions?

Today in class we discussed the philosophical and poetic quality of Tagore’s prose, and the distinctive style and form of this political allegory. For your discussion post assignment this week, pull a passage from Home and the World that interests you for its philosophical and/or poetic content. Type up the passage (or an excerpt of the passage if it is particularly long) into your discussion post, with a page number citation. Then write a1-2 paragraph analysis of the passage. This can be a close reading, where you analyze the literary devices used in the passage, it can be a discussion of a theme you see developing in the novel, it can be an interpretation of the meaning of the passage, or a contention you have with the philosophical point of view, etc.

The purpose of this exercise is to have you try meditation and then write about your experience.
Find a place where you can be alone and it is quiet. The first thing to clarify: What we’re doing here is aiming for mindfulness, not some process that magically wipes your mind clear of the countless and endless thoughts that erupt and ping constantly in our brains. We’re just practicing bringing our attention to our breath, and then back to the breath when we notice our attention has wandered.

Get comfortable and prepare to sit still for a few minutes. After you stop reading this, you’re going to simply focus on your own natural inhaling and exhaling of breath.
Focus on your breath. Where do you feel your breath most? In your belly? In your nose? Try to keep your attention on your inhale and exhale.
Follow your breath for two minutes. Take a deep inhale, expanding your belly, and then exhale slowly, elongating the out-breath as your belly contracts.

Welcome back. What happened? How long was it before your mind wandered away from your breath? Did you notice how busy your mind was even without consciously directing it to think about anything in particular? Did you notice yourself getting caught up in thoughts before you came back to reading this?
