In chapter 5 of your textbook, the authors discussed the ways that we look at art to find meaning. Information that we can gather can explain what a work of art means or what the artist might be telling. That information includes the historical, social, personal, political and scientific context in which the artist created the artwork (5.3)
Purpose: This assignment will help you place works of art within the socio-cultural context that existed when an artist was working. It will encourage you to look more closely at the details of a work’s composition for clues about the meaning of the artwork. This assignment will guide you to apply the concepts and vocabulary in the textbook.
Task:
Choose two artworks that can be talked about within a socio-cultural context (historical, social, personal, political and/or scientific contexts). Your choices should reflect different contexts from each other for variety. Make sure to identify the work of art by both title and artist, and include a photograph (a screenshot will do) so that students will know what you are writing about. You may choose these artworks from the Your Definition of Art and Modern and Contemporary Artists page in Unit 1, the Drawings and Sculpture: the Structure of Art Discussion PDF in Unit 2, or the Definitions of Art: Definitions and Examples in Unit 2. Do NOT choose artworks from the chapter text in this unit whose contexts have already been explained. Feel free to use those explanations as models, however.
In your first paragraph, thoroughly explain the context for the first artwork’s creation, and discuss how understanding the context for the work’s creation helps us to understand the work of art. Make sure you are specific and discuss this in-depth. Base your discussion on the information in the textbook and additional research.
In your second paragraph, repeat step 2 for your second work of art.
Make sure to utilize the Key Terms (words in bold and defined in the key terms section at the end of the chapter).
Your post should be at least 150 words.
Respond to at least two (2) of your classmates’ posts on their discussion of socio-cultural contexts. Make sure that your response is thoughtful and intended to add to the discussion. Each response should be at least 50 words.

Choose your own topic, but make sure that you establish the judgment you are making about your topic somewhere in the introduction. The goal of an evaluative essay is to make some kind of value judgment. Your judgment should be based on a set of criteria: for instance, if you make a “judgment” that a specific restaurant is a bad one at which to eat, the “criteria” that you use to make the “judgment” might include slow service, noisy atmosphere, high prices, and poorly-prepared food.
With that in mind, one of the following topics may serve your purpose: a restaurant, a movie, a car, a vacation spot, or whether it is better to live in the country or the city, or whether it is better to live in a house or apartment. You will need to be specific about the topic: for instance, if you write about a restaurant or movie, you will need to name it. Writing Approach
In this essay assignment, your goal should be to demonstrate the basis for your judgment: Why did you make the judgment you did about your topic? Provide your readers with an understanding of your decision-making process. You do not need to persuade everyone to hold your view, only that your view came about through sound reasoning. In any case, be aware of your audience (your classmates) and your tone, which should be relatively formal although first-person pronouns are acceptable. Your choice of words may greatly influence your reader’s impression of your topic. Be careful to present your topic as you would like it to be interpreted.

Writing Tasks
Before you begin your essay, you should choose which stance you will take on the topic (i.e., are you for the topic, against it, or some combination of both).
Then, develop a strong, specific thesis that argues a specific claim about that topic (i.e., don’t simply argue “I am for ______” or “I am against ______”). Remember that you must argue about a specific change that you want to see happen in order to rectify your issue.
To help build the ethos and logos appeals of your argument, you will be required to use at least five sources in your essay.
While you may reference sources like personal blogs or Wikipedia in your paper, three of your five sources must be more credible than Wikipedia or a personal blog (e.g., articles and/or images from magazines, journals, or newspapers; books; government websites, etc.).
Consider the audience of your essay. Will your reader be receptive to your argument, or will they be strongly opposed to your claims? Your audience’s reaction to your thesis will determine a number of things in your writing, including structure, tone, and evidence.
Also, keep in mind that while recognizing opposing viewpoints certainly lends credibility and ethos to your argument, you don’t want to undermine your own claims. Give credit and acknowledgement to other opinions, but simultaneously reinforce your own ideas.
Assessment
Your grade will derive from your abilities to argue successfully your thesis using convincing evidence, specific details and examples, and pertinent outside sources, as well as to organize your thoughts in an effective and logical style to help your reader clearly understand your argument.

Select one topic that has a direct connection to infant development and do some additional research on the topic. (For instance, “homeschooling” is not an infant topic. Some of the topics are directly addressed in our textbook and/or online content. Some topics are not directly addressed, but the impact of every topic relates back to the course content in terms of healthy social, cognitive or physical development during infancy. For this assignment, you will assume the role of a gaming entrepreneur who will attempt to take on the challenge of opening a new hotel and casino resort in Atlantic City. To accomplish your vision, you will need to convince banks to invest in your project. So you will make a pitch to them about how you see your very unique idea for a new gaming resort become successful because of its design and image.

First, address some of the challenges and problems you are facing trying to open a new hotel and casino resort in Atlantic City and how you will try and overcome those challenges in the location, design, and features of your resort. Research and discuss what have been the ongoing problems of maintaining a successful gaming center in Atlantic City. In other words, what are the reasons cited by experts for why Atlantic City remains a blighted, economically struggling area instead of becoming the sort of thriving and prosperous gambling mecca that Las Vegas is. Afterward, being very knowledgeable about the concept of adding a “theme” to a business and the creation of an “immersive experience,” much the same way successful theme parks create immersive experiences (as do the casino resorts of Las Vegas), you need to explain what the theme of your new casino will be. Consider some of the other successful themed resorts in Vegas like the Roman theme of Caesar’s Palace or the Paris theme of Bally’s or the Egyptian theme of the Luxor Hotel and Casino. What will be the theme and immersive experience you will create for your new Atlantic City resort? Discuss why you think this theme would be a unique fit for a new hotel and casino in New Jersey. Will you create some kind of a very special and unique ride or set of experiences in this hotel to further the immersive experience the way Vegas’ Circus Circus resort has an indoor amusement park with a roller coaster or the way the Venetian has gondola rides?
Again think specifically of New Jersey and the tristate area and its culture, location, its very image to create a unique theme that would work well here and attract tourists from other states and other countries.

This paper will be due on March 8, the last day of classes. It should be 6 to 8 pages long and written in Roman 12 point font, double spaced, and using one inch margins. Please proofread your paper carefully because grammar and spelling errors will be penalized.

Essay needs a title page, two written pages on the requirements that will be attached below and a bibliography. Don’t worry about the due dates that will be on the instructions. The essay was split into sections, but just combine the sections together and it will all work out. The instructions are pretty strict on length where it needs to be two full pages and no longer. The research paper is on Yum! Brands and all the ratios need to be trailing twelve months. A powerpoint of the formatting will be included, but the format on the powerpoint says double spaced when it is actually single spaced. You don’t really have to include the title page to save you time since it will only take me about 3 minutes to do. All I really need is the two pages of information and a bibliography. In text citations are not required, but they are encouraged.
