Construction of a Formal Introduction
Your introduction should provide the reader with all the context and background information
necessary to understand the study and research motivation. The content of good introductions
is often organized as an inverted triangle: begin by discussing the topic broadly and end with a
very specific outline of the research goals. Please use the following structure for your
introduction:

1. Begin with a broad overview of the topic. What are invasive
plant species? Why is it important to investigate the role of
belowground interactions in their growth/success? Define any
unfamiliar concepts, terminology, or ideas where necessary.
(1 paragraph)
2. Discuss what we already know about the topic and what remains
to be understood by ecologists. Provide specific examples from
the literature. The information provided in this section
should directly support the hypotheses you provide at the
end of the introduction. It should explain to the reader
the motivation behind your research and justify your selection
for most and least diverse habitats (2-3 paragraphs)
3. Introduce your research questions. What ecological question(s) is your study looking to
address? Clearly state your research hypotheses. (1 paragraph)

CONSTRUCTING A LAB REPORT
PART 1: THE INTRODUCTION
Weight: 10% of final grade
Due Date: 18 February 2022 at 9:00 PM

Background
Please attend/watch the lecture recording from 25 January 2022 for a more detailed description
of the experiment.

You are an ecologist interested in the impact of soil microorganisms (bacteria, microarthropods
and fungi) on the growth of a (hypothetical) non-native herbaceous plant, Krystalus nunesi. This
plant is native to Portugal but has become invasive in southern and central Ontario. You collect
soil from four locations across Ontario:
1. Toronto, where K. nunesi was first introduced and has been established for >50 years
2. Sudbury, where K. nunesi has been established for 30-40 years
3. Timmins, where K. nunesi has been established for 10-20 years
4. Moosonee, where K. nunesi only appeared in the last year

You order K. nunesi seeds from an online European distributor and germinate them in lab under
sterile conditions. You will plant these seeds in the soils collected from each of the four
locations, as well as sterilized soil from each location (as control). You will grow them in a
growth chamber under consistent light and watering conditions ideal for growth, and after 4
months you will measure plant growth.

The data collected from this experiment will be provided to you. However, as with all scientific
experiments, before commencing data collection one must first familiarize themselves with
the existing literature, clearly define the research objectives, and create testable hypothese

Develop a 1000-1200 word essay (with a minimum of 850 words) that responds to either prompt A or prompt B below. Before writing carefully read the philosophy paper writing guidelines. Note, while you may use external sources, you will not be graded on your knowledge of those sources. You will be graded exclusively on the material presented in the text and in the course Explorations. Note also that submissions should be 1) double-spaced and 2) formatted according to MLA standards. This includes appropriately cited in-text citations, as well as a complete bibliography.

A. Divine Command Theory. According to Divine Command Theory (DCT), morality is determined by God. Explain the DCT, making sure to distinguish the “Unrestricted” version of the theory from the “Restricted” version. Then assess the theory.
Does either version provide a plausible account of morality (i.e. of what’s right, wrong, good or bad)? Is morality really determined by God’s commands? Why? Why not?
Following your introduction and thesis statement, your response should include in order:
(1) an explanation of DCT, including an account of Unrestricted and Restricted versions of the theory
(2) a thesis statement that conforms to the writing guide
(3) a brief discussion of why someone might find DCT appealing
(4) 1-2 objections to DCT (you might consider the Euthyphro dilemma, Nielsen’s argument, Nucci’s empirical studies discussed in the text, or some other challenge related to determinacy, consistency, applicability, intuitive appeal, internal support, external support, explanatory power)
(5) a critical evaluation of those objections (Can they be resolved? How might the Divine Command Theorist respond? Is this response plausible?)
(6) Following this analysis develop a brief conclusion that summarizes your arguments.
B. Moral Relativism. According to Moral Relativism, morality is determined by one’s culture. Explain the moral relativist’s position that morality is determined by culture, taking care to distinguish moral relativism from the context sensitivity thesis. Then assess the theory. Does moral relativism offer a plausible account of morality (i.e. what’s right, wrong, good and bad)? Is morality really determined by one’s culture? Why? Why not?
Following your introduction and thesis statement, your response should include in order:
(1) an explanation of moral relativism, including an account of how it differs from the context sensitivity thesis
(2) a thesis statement that conforms to the writing guide
(3) a brief discussion of why someone might final moral relativism appealing
(4) 1-2 objections to moral relativism (you might consider whether relativism plausibly follows from moral diversity and whether moral disagreements are fundamental, or some challenge related to one of the criteria of evaluation, i.e. determinacy, consistency, applicability, intuitive appeal, internal support, external support, explanatory power)
(5) a critical evaluation of those objections (Can they be resolved? How might a moral relativist response? Is this response plausible?)
(6) Following your analysis, develop a brief conclusion that summarizes your arguments.

Using one of the news websites from the provided list (attached), search for a current news story that demonstrates a moral or ethical dilemma. Your current news selection must be within the last 90 days. Examine the news story. Be sure to reflect and consider all aspects and viewpoints the author provides.

In your initial post, state the title of the news story and include the link so that others can access the story. Briefly summarize the story and explain the moral or ethical issue/dilemma and how it relates to an ethical theory, principle, and concept or code in the course text. Your response must be at least 200 words and show a clear connection between the news story/event and the course material/ethical theory.

In two to three pages, write a short biography of the African American playwright, highlighting her best-known play “A Raisin in the Sun” & examining how she expressed the African American struggle thru her writing.
